I realize that the question should have been:
"What would you like to see in X-Com:EU?"
My apologies for hasty poll

I wouldn't be adverse to either to coop (multiplayer might be tougher) but I'll be quite content with single player and I'd hate for the single player mode to suffer because of say design modifcations to make coop or mp possible... or have it suffer due to the time commitments needed for either of them.
I feel the poll is not usefull. Of course I would prefer to have everything. But I would mind getting MP if SP suffers. So do I vote "Single Player" or "Multiplayer/Coop" ? And what if I just want SP and Mod Tools? Making polls is difficult, one really should think about them and not create them quickly.
Yes, I was going to add SP/MOD Tools as a 4th option, however I thought about it after the fact. In any case, don't think this poll is pointless.
It's almost safe to say, since no official comment was made about this topic, that MP/Coop won't have any part in X-Com:EU, so there is no need for us to worry about SP suffering on the account of MP, however it would be nice to see how the community feels about it, maybe future will hold some DLCs or Expansions with such luxuries.
This is completely silly.. This is a single player game. Period. End.
As already pointed out:
1) Time is a finite thing. They cannot implement additional features without spending time programming them.. And there is no way in hell they should delay the release to implement multiplayer
2) The amount of time people would need to invest to actually play the campaign multiplayer is huge.. meaning only a few people would use it. Why waste all that energy and time doing something that almost no one will use?
Believe it or not, but MP does add more players to the game and in the end, it also helps it's longevity. Just saying, there are many gamers out there that will toss the SP game once it's finished and unless the devs keep on constantly throwing DLCs and Expansions at them, they move on to something else, fast. Some of them, I actually know a couple, won't even bother buying a SP game because it's a waste of money, since they can't play with their friends. Sometimes even for me, co-op option is a decisive selling point. I look how many hours of game play will SP provide and if it's a low number than game will not get my money until Steam has xmas sales. On top of that, MP usually brings along modding communities which also help the game thrive. Sometimes even years after the initial release.
the german article shows some indication that firaxis might even be working on this.
To our question if there's going to be a CO-OP or PVP part, we got a meaningful answer: „this event is focused on single play only“. So there is still hope left and we're optimistic that there's somehting going on in this case.
Guys, the game has already been made, it's not like if you vote you want mp/co-op all of a sudden the sp version gets worse lol. obviously since we're already at the part where its all done we would for 'all of the above' duh - maybe it should have been a poll 'if it has mp how many of you will use it' or something.
If it had mp I doubt I would use it much, if it has hotseat I can see myself playing with my 8yo. for myself I'm fine with it being a sp only game, more than fine actually.
I want co-op yes. However, I don't want SP to suffer because of it. I know the friends of mine that are looking forward to this game want co-op badly as well. We all want to play a campain together actually. I'd be happy with it being a DLC. I'd actually pay for it and, I have yet to buy a DLC for ANY game I've played....even the ones I liked a lot.
As someone else said as well, in order for this game to stay "alive", they need to either be pushing the DLC out or add some sort of multiplayer aspect. Most people, who are even into the franchise, will play it once (maybe twice) and drop it like a hot potatoe. Only coming back to it once in a great while for a "you know what I haven't played in a looooooong time" moment. If they don't want to work on it, then at least let the mod community work towards it. I'm sure someone could come up with some sort of co-op/multiplayer mod.
11 people represent community opinion now... this game really needs some fanbase
Now there are 12 people
I would love a co-op mode, but I fear that it's too late to get one now. Unless Firaxis have been working on one. But I'll take a great single player game and mod tools as compensation.
The Total War series have multiplayer online campaign ever since Empire Total War. That means about 4 games have a multiplayer campaign, allowing two people to play a campaign with turn-based strategy and real-time battles. Even before those 4 games, 4 others had basic hotseat capabilities, which were actively used. RTS has become a small market, TBS has nearly died out, but Total War is still going strong. Granted, it took a publisher change to make it happen, but the Total War series is a AAA title and they apparantly found it worthy enough to implement co-op and versus TBS multiplayer.
Firaxis might not have had the funds to do a co-op campaign now, but who knows, perhaps the future. Oh, and there is interest, you can be sure about that. This is, what, the 4th thread about multiplayer? Says enough, really. No need to dismiss co-op claims because of a lack of interest.
But knowing that I'd still start a co-op game - it'd be fun while it lasted.
My personal fear with a co-op/multiplayer game is how would it affect the single player game? A mechanic might work great for SP but be a burden in MP and the replacement mechanic could lessen the single player experience. Divergent coding between the two are possible for some things - if you can afford the time/manpower - but not for all elements.
A finished product with a great single player experience and some sort of multiplayer I'm all for (except for the fear that it won't be great)
Players who love only simple "click and send unit" not join to Xcom (if this will be thats same like first xcom). Xcom is that same individual game like Jagged Alliance - and to JA ppls make still do mods!
But if we looks on game like on game to play, not like on machine to make moneys im for Co-Op
I love play with friends in cooperative games like BF3, Dawn of War, Saints Row, Gears of War or Age of Empires, so YES im for Co-Op mode, but in DLC. First lets play in good SP
I hope CO-OP will be added.
I would be happy for this one to be just single player... but if it had co-op I would definatly use it.
What about this for a multiplayer idea. What if instead of earth vs aliens with a player taking each side ( which i have no problem with, in fact i like it but bear with me) they made like a "virtual wargames" where i could take my best 6 vs your best 6.Even better if it could be 3 players on a huge custom map so it could have that 6 on 12 feeling. . The game would start with players on opposite sides of the map ( fog of war included). Each player would load soldiers from a game save file, preferably late game but not necessarily. Each soldier should have his or her stats, abilities and access to weapons. However these weapons will basically be firing blanks. Even with no perma-death your soliders would have the same amount of hit points but instead of dying when a soldier ran out of hit points a God-like voice could announce " solider's name or nickname" is dead and the soldier could walk off the battle field cursing at his squadmate for his virtual death. I think the differences in squad makeup, weapons choices and strategies would make for a fun game. I know it not really related to XCOM persay but it seems easier to do than having to learn how to play with the aliens just for multiplayer purposes.
It is possible that MP/Coop scenario could work in 4 player game, if we assume that 2 of them could control alien factions and operate out of their motherships in earths orbit***. Since all the models and tech trees are in place, it would be just a matter of implementing a way for us to control aliens and work the tech tree maybe build extra sections of the mothership, or have some sort of gathering resources system that allows us to build bigger harvester ships, maybe even land our mothership or smaller FOB type craft on alien friendly territory, to establish a base. That even could be a decisive move to winning the game or be one of the conditions that have to be met for the total victory. Of course at this stage of the development, yes I 100% agree, this scenario would be perfect for Expansion Pack.
Coop 1-2 (maybe 3):
I think that this mode wouldn't really require major changes to the game play or the game mechanics. Each player picks a place and has it's own base on the globe, researches their own tech, sends in troops to do their bidding, nothing different there, everybody has their turn. The difference would come when you go do missions, each player brings say 4-6 of their troops and it's business time. Of course the lvl of difficulty would had to scale to accommodate the number of players on the field, as well as the amount of aliens that come to play. It was mentioned before in other threads that there are big maps for us to roam, my question is, are they big enough? Possibly, if so, there is another change that is not necessary for this to make it work. Every other element would basically stay the same.
The real issue is with ability to join different coop games and a way to leave without disturbing the flow. Rather if it's a Public Game or Exclusive Game. I'm kinda stumped on this one, maybe somebody else has some other ideas. For now lets assume that there is a way to judge the progress lvl of the player in the game, that way you could see who's online and what's their lvl of progress, if similar, than you could just join in, while the other players would receive a msg: that there was a friendly xcom base found operating near by and they will join our cause. Again the lvl of difficulty would scale up as each player joins/leaves. Every player relation with the governments would have to remain separate so ppl couldn't bomb our reputation by joining in.
I'm just throwing it out there folks, this could work and like somebody else pointed out (I'm sorry I can't remember who) there is enough interest out there for this game to expand on this feature. In any case, I will take whatever I can get and if it is SP only, I'll be grateful either way. There is always room for Expansion Packs.
***(correct me if I'm wrong but, there is no mission to Mars in the remake, is there?)
You could have a limited mp/co-op. I would prefer that. Playing normally as single player, and in certain missions a sort of backup team with arrive and play with you in turn base system (you-alien-other player-alien), this could be usefull for crash sites of Battleships, i dont think a 4-6 men team would be enough for a huge ship with 30 aliens in it! (unless they removed these from the remake). That way nothing with interfere with the game, maybe just the outcome of that mission. You would just wait for a mission to be available and join in to help, i wouldn't mind doing that, it would be like a quick game without base management. (A bit like the co-op of Uncharted 3, but with the missions really being part of someone's game)
And it obviously would only be available for the players that enabled it in the menu.
About MODs, if devs want they can facilitate mod production, i guess most fan made mods will be graphical. Either way mods end up being made , wether devs want or not... it always happens! (How else would people play a nearly bug free Skyrim?? If they waited for Beth to fix bugs they will have grandchildren by then)
What this franchise should have is, a tv series and/or a cartoon, and a MMO with perhaps what happens next.
And a rpg system, some fans made it already, quite amazing.
I hope there's some kind of multiplayer in it, whether it be co-op or some kind of competitive mode. My guess is there will be some kind of MP in it. The fact that Firaxis won't comment on it leads me to believe there's something to hide. If it was solely a single player game they would have stated so. I hope we find out for sure during E3.
Either way, I can't wait. I just feel MP extends the life of the game drastically.
LMAO Just though of a co-op mission with chryssalids! I could see me playing with my brother I run all my guys straite in to a chryssalid and all my guys turn then my bother is siting on top of 7 chryssalids screeming "why did you do that!!" ... I reply "I switched teams I am co-oping with the aliens this round, I always wanted to be a chryssalid horde... watch out here we come!" que evil laugh.
I don't normally troll people in games but I would like to do it to my brother ... just once. : )
What is the question of the poll?
Which game mode do you hate most?
Answers (like "42") are completely meaningless if you don't know the question.
yes, there should also be a choice for:
X-COM has always been a very personal intense experience, I feel some of that would be lost if you start playing it with others. You should be on your own in the dark with headphones on. The original soundtrack still sends shivers up my spine.
I'd like to see squad combat to see whos squad tactics and set-up is better. And co-op. I dont see whats wrong with that either. You want just a single player aspect? Then dont click the multiplayer menu icon. Its as simple as that. But seriously id give multiplayer up altogether for moding tools and steam workshop support. Custom armor and weapon packs with map packs and alot of other gameplay features and elements being added. Modders are what really make games stay thriving. Plus you seriously cant argue NOT to put modding tools in because if you dont want a mod, dont download one.
Wait but there is multiplayer. It's what's gonna happen to you when you're crying to your buddy how you got owned by some sectiods.
i wouldn't mind a system like dragons dogma were you can hire people from your friends troops but im not sure how they would do coop and stuff
