Well no, but being completely original shouldn't be the top priority.
The most important thing should be to make a design that fits the role and looks great.

That's really well done. Kudos to you, although it's kinda ironic that you post a model copying a popular design when that is exactly the thing you hate about the new Chryssalid.

-In fact, it looks just like the Rachni/Husk too. (wow, I knew BioWare was lazy when it comes to aliens, but geez!)

-The Akrid from Lost Planet. Image 1 Image 2

-and even a bit of ant-lion, but less so.

Xeno? Where is the Xeno? Like I said, it looks just like a Keeper with a bit of Akrid.

Yes, the old Chryssalids were "inspired" by the xenomorphs, But as long as you try adding something new, it's all okay (sometimes).

Like the face; no other alien or monster has a design like that. Small eyes, tiled skin, and that Grining smile. I was hoping that they would explain that Grin, by saying it eats grass or something. But I guess they were too lazy to give an explanation.

But now, it looks just like any other insect alien. When newcomers see it, they are going to say it's a rip-off of Mass Effect or Lost Planet. This is as bad as changing the iconic long head of xenomorphs into something more.... boring

The design is lazy. And it looks cheap too, that even I could recreate it in one day.
Xeno would definitely be in there because the artist who first designed it has said he was was clearly inspired by quite a few insects. The trope of using insectoid aliens is way older than every example you've posted. Starship Troopers (the book) comes readily to mind, and its bug army uses guns and wears armor.

I wouldn't say the original was distinctly crustacean, maybe more like a beetle or a tailless scorpion. In fact, where do you think they got the term sectoid (hint: 'sectoid)?

In the end, it all boils down to user preference. Some will love the Chryssalid, others won't. You can't please everyone nor should you try to do so. On a personal note, I do love the Chryssalid. Not at first, I was letting nostalgia cloud my judgement. But having slept on it, the new Chryssalid seems more scary than the old one. Four legs, jumps 2 stories high, looks so tough that you wouldn't go near it or touch it with a ten-foot long pole. Now we just need to see some more Sectopod and Snakeman. And perhaps an Ethereal.

Ah yes, the old design vs the new design, the classic vs the remake... the stuff of legend.

As much as I like -- no, scratch that, LOVE the classic, I so far, enjoy the changes they made. Every single time I would look at a redesigned alien of XCOM I would be like (at first) whoa, what did they do!? But when my head would clear, I would be like "Y'know ... this is actually really cool".

The floater and the chrysallid so far are the only enemies that have been almost completely re-designed, so they're the best candidates for the "YOU'VE-RUINED-EVERYTHING-RANT" award. But ... seriously, let's compare the old chrysalid with the new.

The old Chrysalid would walk like an actor in a Godzilla film. The new ones actually *feel* alien. They walk / run really fast, they brutally mutilate their opponents, they feel scary *both* visually as well as in terms of gameplay. This game feels like the Gamecube RE remake: True to the classic, but with a huge boost in visuals.

The floater was one of the most ridiculous-looking aliens in XCOM UFO Defence, and I'm glad to see he finally scores some points in bad-assness in the re-make.

If I have one complain with the re-designs, it's the so-far large number of aliens being mouth-less. The floater has gas-masks, the Muton has gas-masks, the Sectoid has no mouth ... I love ninjas and psycho mantis as much as the next guy, but I would like some variety in the mouth area.

PS: The snakeman and the sectopod are the only aliens I need to know if they're verified now. Since the chrysallids are helpless against flying suits, it is only natural to have backup from armed units ... I just hope it's the snakemen. I don't worry about the Ethereals, I'm sure the mind-f*&*ers are in.

Sectopods have been indirectly confirmed ( an interviewer mentioned one crahsing through a wall in the demo).
As for Snakemen: I'm pretty sure they are in. In fact I believe they might get stealth abilities, because there IS a stealth suit in the game.
That technology has to come from somewhere after all.

Um Chryssalids jump now. Like at least two floors at a time. What's to say they can't totally take down a flying suit guy in midair?

    Now try sleeping at night.

Seriously, the guy with the rifle was hanging pretty far back from the chryssalids in the video. Sure he's a sniper but still... suspicious... =__=

ok this is taken from the gamespy interview:

"The demo ends with a look at a gigantic Sectopod, a revised version of the heavy alien mechs that are sometimes seen with Sectoids. The original Sectopod is the size of a drone tank; this one is the size of a house, and packs some heavy firepower. A boss fight, perhaps? I can't wait to actually play some of this stuff -- the tutorial was a tantalizing first glimpse, but so limited I only barely feel like I've really played. "

    Sounds awesome.

    Here: http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/xcom-enemy-...1224797p1.html

There is no video of the Sectopod in action.(yet)

There are three other things I learned from that arcticle:

    1. stealth is human technology so there won't be stealth aliens (BOOO)
    2. There is something called a "heavy floater" which is probably a tougher version of a normal flaoter.
    3. the alloy cannon- some kind of plasma shotgun.

I think one of the major weaknesses of the old alien designs of X-Com were how homogeneous they all were - basically all slight variations on a very similar humanoid shape. Even the old Chryssalids were humanoid.

I'm happy to see what's been done with chryssies and floaters - especially in the floater; they very clearly retain the theme of "heavily surgically altered life form" and in this regard I feel that these guys took that concept and completely ran with it. I think they completely knocked the ball out of the park with the new floaters. As for the Chryssies, it was a great opportunity to break away from the biped-humanoid design that most of the aliens wind up with, though I must admit I do miss the old crab claws.

I hope he didn't get a possible sectipod confused with the new cyberdisk ground state.

He talked about a mech as big as a house! I think there is little chance to confuse THAT with a cyberdisk.

You sure? I'm afraid he might be being hyperbolic.

hold on there ,he may be right maybe he confused it with the new cyberdisc, and the "as big as a house" is maybe refering to the second look of the cyberdisc the spider transformation wich make it look bigger

Guys just read the newest RPS interview. He does mention a Sectopod too.
I don't really think two guys can screw up the names like that.

"RPS: In the video you showed to us earlier, with the Sectopod (a giant alien mech-type thing crashing through a building), there’s a sense of escalation. The tougher you get, the tougher they get."

Really i don't think those puny Cyberdisks could "crash" trough a building!

Okay, fair enough. He just mentioned it in passing and I forgot the RPS article. Through a building sounds specific enough.

Is it okay if I'm being a stick in the mud again? Because I don't really know if I like the Sectopod becoming a "Boss" type enemy.
To be precise I'm not convinced of the idea of Xcom:EU having boss battles at all...

Maybe its cutscene has it crashing through some background building not actually on the map.

Though, I'll point out that even if it's one it sounds pretty tough, and one tough alien might as well be a boss, but you don't have to call it that if it makes you feel better.

Myself: The old chrysalids always looked exactly like a xenomorph from Alien - right down to that "grin," even. So I can't really blame Firaxis for going with a total redesign on this one.

Yeah, pretty much this - the old design was based off what was already a common trope by that time.

I don't think any of that's an innate argument against "lazy," but then I don't really understand that argument, either. I mean, I can see merit in saying you don't like something - but to presume to know how hard the art team did (or didn't) work on any of the alien concepts just seems... very pompous to me.

I'm also not seeing that much of a resemblance to a Keeper from Bioware (and the rachni is certainly a stretch, I think.)

I don't know - I thought the new chrysalid model looked pretty cool. The first time I saw them in that video, I knew what they were, and I knew to be scared. They remain my absolute "least favorite" enemy from the old X-Com. Other enemies might be harder, sure. But those were the one enemy that every time they showed up I'd drop everything and focus all of my attention on taking them down as quickly as possible.

sectopods are seen with ethereals not sectoid. the interviewer could have mistaken sectopod for cyber disc OR sectoid for ethereal. :|

After Reaper Squad had taken out the bad guys we were met with a cutscene that showed the squad in formation ready to tackle the gigantic robotic like alien that smashed its way through the adjacent building. Cue cut to black and this is where our hands on with the game started.

HEY! I found this topic again!

Anyways, another reason I don't like the new Chryssalids is because.... well, just look at these:

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...t=86841&page=2

Any one of those could have made for a better Chryssalid. well, most of them anyways.

They are all so much better, that I just want to make another poll with these images. (does anyone want me to do that?)

    (I'll just quote myself)

I find that hard to believe. I mean, they both have the same legs, the same torso (but with the Keeper looking fatter), the same arms, even the same way the head bends down.

I have to say: nice find. These art concepts really do look great. I even like them better the the Firaxis-version, which looks like a black starship-troopers bug. I do not mind the Firaxis version, but these here are better.

I actually like the new Chrysallid. It actually looks alien as opposed to a cartoony anthropomorphic bug.
Well, except for the glowing bits. Those don't make much sense. I mean, why would an ambush predator wear lights?

I can see why they didn't go with that one.
It just screams "I am so FAAAABULOUSSS!" in the attack concept art, and it looks pretty dopey as well.
