Thread: Graphics are not realistic enough and too toony.

  1. #1

Graphics are not realistic enough and too toony.

    Hello,

I just like to write that I don't really like the graphics for x-com remake. It's ok-ish for a first 3D version, but I would rather see realistic graphics and realistic stuff, instead of cartoony nonsense.

For me x-com was always about: "What if this really happened ?".

With the cartoony look I don't feel that.

    Bye,
    Skybuck.

ok aegeri, you have got to understand the old x-com had graphic limitations k,in the high end graphic card era we live ,he whould have a point ,it s his right to exercise it ,and skybuck the thing is thats how producers felt of handeling the graphic aspect of the game ,it does sometimes look kinds weird having guns that big ,almost bigger than them) but the game is ok,if you will play from above and dasble glam cam and all that it wll loook lke the old x-com ,so no worries

This is actually ignoring the incredibly deliberate decisions made in the original X-COM in terms of artstyle. For the time of its release, we had seen games that tried to be more "gritty" (for lack of a better word) like Doom - so the bright, colorful style of the original was not solely technical limitations: It was a deliberate choice in artstyle. Implying the way this game looks is "Cartoony Nonsense" is just utterly ridiculous, given the game that it is directly inspired from is almost certainly highly cartoony and not at all realistic looking.

doom is unique it was revolutionary for it s time, the point was as i stated the devs wanted to go with this theme it s they r choice ,no prob for me ,i l just play from eagle eye perspective and disable glaaam cam ,i think he wanted to point out that thisi s kinda the trend now wth a little cartoony style games ,borderlans ,torchlight ,bioshock infinite...and so ,but it will be ok as long as it has CLASSIC DIFICULTY i m happy

sorry but the words "computer game" and "realistic" just dont go together. no matter what style/detail the graphics are.
ever played a board game and thought: sheeesh, this toony look of settlers of catan is so unrealistic?!

also: please explain what's supposed to be "realistic" when playing aliens-invading-earth?

just trust your own imagination. once you had some good times with the game, you'll still think: "what if that really happened?!"

graphics are silver, but gameplay is golden!

I actually rather like the aesthetic they're going with, with this game. For one, I've always found Firaxis to be really good at putting out a very crisp visual style that reads well from a distance without sacrificing visual style for readability.

What they're going for is very much a tabletop miniatures look (I believe one of the earlier dev interviews makes mention of this - too tired to bother looking up a link, though. RPS probably has it, though.) And again, that's a style not derived from a limitation on their part, but a conscious decision.

With miniatures, you're usually going a bit more blocky, with larger weapons, so that it's easier to distinguish between separate units from higher up. A good miniature sculptor is more than capable of making less stylized models (and some sets do go for this, though it tends to be the exception that proves the rule,) it's just that there are viable reasons for these aesthetic choices.

Therefore I think "cartoony" isn't quite so apt a description. "Stylized" is probably closer to the word you're looking for.

(I'm not going to argue that anyone ought to feel one way or another about it, however - as that's all just a matter of opinion. I see what they're going for, agree with their reasoning, and I think they succeeded at their goal. But mileage will of course vary from person to person.)

You know that this implies that you don't think XCOM was revolutionary for its time, right?

On topic: The truth is a much simpler one, you never go totally realistic in a strategy game (and I think Enemy Unknown hits on the more realistic side anyway). Why, you may ask. Well it's a concept called the uncanny valley. Basically (and I am in no way a professional on the concept of robotics, but I do understand it from an art standpoint) it is that the when a robot starts out as R2D2 it's cute, it's novel, but the closer you get to more human looking things the creepier it gets for us. You ever seen one of those weird Japanese robots that look human, but you're kind of put off because they don't move quite right or they have a thousand-yard stare? Welcome to the uncanny valley.

This also makes an appearance in horror as a concept called The Uncanny, this is why a lot of people like zombie horror movies, they're human... but not quite right. The Thing, from the titular movie, plays on this fear when it has occupied the form of another human.

What does this mean for games? Well, Mario is distinctly human, but he's really easy to get along with because he's a caricature. However, if you've ever been put off by playing some of the "realistic" sports games you know you're in the valley once more.

What does this mean for XCOM. Well, in a 3D game with a free camera the people have to look just as real from as far back as possible, but still look just as real as close as possible. Since there are such a small number of individual characters (aliens and humans) on the board a highly "realistic" approach does not work. It's not like Total War where faceless mook after faceless mook lines up in the grand army to throw themselves against the walls of a castle like so many waves on rocks. So, by toning down the "realism" the humans might look a little too much like action figures but they'll look good consistently.

Nothing, read the post. By implying that Doom holds something special over XCOM, you don't think XCOM is as special as Doom or not special at all. Or at leas that it's "Realistic for the time" art-style is not special, when compared to Dooms.

    I. Think. It's. Funny. That. Is. All.

you know how i feel about the old x-com we argued before but the thing is doom made a much more higher impact on gaming as we know it today ,how many games today are doom recipes ,not saying x-com wasn t rev but it did not get such a high impact unfortunately, that s why it has a smaller comunity comparing to fps games

I gotta say i kinda like the art style. The G.I. Joe comparasion drives it home for me. I was a huge Joe fan back in the day. Plus it's art style reminds me a little of Batallion Wars 2 on the Wii. That game to me is one of the most underrated RTS combat game ever.

I rather the Developer invest their resources on gameplay rather than super realistic graphics. The present stylized art is decent enough and serves it purpose. I wouldn't even call it cartoony at all, the humans character are proportioned realistically, their movement looks human like, their facial feature are recognizably human and not overly exagerated. Sure their skin is super smooth & flawless, but thats hardly a big deal.

If they have eyes bigger than their mouths, barely noticeble nose, legs shorther than their arms, and heads as wide as their shoulder than that qualifies as being cartoony.

    Cartoony nonsense? :/

I think it looks awesome, but as the saying goes you can't please everyone.

It's also been mentioned that without this look the soldiers would look identical from the zoomed out iso view.

I think the art style fits... with something like Company of Heroes the devs went with realistic and dirty visuals to capture the nature of the conflict. The realism helps to place the game into the setting and makes it all a little more believable.

In UFO:EU the plot is a heroic fight against overwhelming odds, black and white; they're the bad guys, we're the good. In that setting comic book stylized characters and visuals just about hits the mark.

Actually, very much in line with the original, they stylized the art direction but the violent and perma-death nature of the gaemplay help deconstruct the whole comic book look. Just like the original and its bright visuals.

Geez, this forum gives me the feeling that there's a young boy watching... and if anyone stops smiling and being happy they'll end up getting sent to the field. (but that's a good thing, today's a good day )

Here ideas seem to get exchanged... and while some people get fairly passionate about their beliefs it's for the most part pretty respectful.

It's a complete difference from the Diablo 3 forums. I returned my copy last Thursday but I still end up going back to those forums over and over again. It's like some sort of grotesque reality show over there. Like a car crash that just keeps happening and you can't turn away from. The vitriol that's spewed by both sides is toxic.

Here? It's intelligent people with differing views sharing those views and seeing where there might be common ground (most of the time anyways). It's a lot healthier.. lol

hahaha thats so funny that you say that, because THAT exactly what i was afraid of when D3 was announced. i was hyped that it came out, thought I'd totally get it, went online, read some posts and was SOOOO peeed off by the immaturity of the people there that I couldnt care less about that game now. respect that you even gave the game back! HA! thats a slap in the face for blizz as i recon many, many people have done the same.

and yeah, I really enjoy this forum too, because everyone treats each other with respect. a little sad now, if you think of it, that we might not be able to play together at some point at all...
and the reason why this forum is handled with respect is i guess, that you'd have to have been old enough in 1994 in order to operate a computer...or even know someone who has one

Yep, because the original game didn't look at all like a brightly-coloured cartoon, even taking into account the technical limitations. And another thing - apparently, things like the trooper to Zombie to Chrysalid procedure are quite gory in this game - if the graphics were too realistic, they'd have to raise the rating, which means lost sales, which means less likelihood of sequels, which is what we all want I'm sure.

Yeah, I was genuinely shocked at how nasty the transformation was. You'd probably get away with it in a T rating though.

It's mostly because this game isn't as widely known as diablo.
Even though I want this game to be a big success I hope that won't attract more trolls to this community.

Anyway how did you manage to return diablo 3? It's bound to your account so the store pretty much made a complete loss on that one.

Well, all the more loot for me I guess XD

I haven't seen it yet - it's good that it's actually shocking! I'm deliberately avoiding any videos that reveal too much, or ones that talk about the late game.

I just love what happens to the men when they panic though! Instead of just silently firing their guns, they actually vocalise it now. You know what they could do: they could have stages: stage one is where they coherently vocalise their fear, stage two where they just grunt and dribble, then stage three where they're completely MC'ed and silently fire their guns!

Well hold on.. Is this a cutscene ? Are we supposed to watch this cut scene every time this occurs ?? I can't imagine enough detail on the regular tactical view to make it too gruesome.

Hmm... I hope it isn't a cutscene, that will 'dilute' the experience a bit for me.

I think it was a 'glam-cam' shot actually. And it was gruesome in the style of the current making.

I can understand that more realism could enhance the fear/tension that was always apart of the original XCOM - the old graphics were bright and toon-ish, but the music did a pretty good job of creating a 'horror' atmosphere.

This might fall into the "uncanny valley" situation that was mentioned, but overly realistic graphics could also lead to the other unrealistic aspects standing out like sore thumbs - the unlimited ammo for example, and I'm guessing some of the perks you can get could be more 'superhuman' than human.

Gaming and reality are just two differenet things. To getting both together at he same level sometime goes difficult!

Okay, yes and no. I have not seen an in-game transformation, but go to the "Late Game/Tutorial" Trailer. It shows a guy being transformed into a chrsalid.

It was digital download direct from Blizzard - they offer 30 days to return. The customer service was great once you get past holding for 2 hours (lol, not unexpected 2 days after a major release). I believe Blizzard will even compensate for boxed copies but I'm not 100% about that.

I'm at two minds about this. On the one hand, I perfer realistic graphics over toony graphics. But they also did a great job with the art style and even though its cartoony, everything is very detailed. Its harder to see detailed stuffs with realistic graphics, so it works out well here. Either way, I think the graphics is great here.

  37. #37
I wouldn't mind more realistic graphics, however, that is the least important aspect of the game for me. Also, the more realistic the graphics are, the more it would cost in money and time. Personally, I'd rather have the game in October than have it delayed until 2013/2014/never.

I'm fine with it. Looks fun. Of course, it would be cool with realistic graphics and effects.

I'm pretty flexible, so...I'd be good either way. ; )

But none of those are from the original game which this is the reimaging of.

    when compared to this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm_4Sx9PQoE

I think the style of the new game is VERY close to the original even down to the perk system - which might allow anime-esque abilities.

BTW.. I think XCOM could look very cool with a more realistic and gritty look but I'm not at all disappointed with how it does look.

I'd be willing to buy a gritty re-reimaging too! lol
