    RPS hands on article!

    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012...enemy-unknown/

reading it now... but pics!! lots of pics

edit: Some nice tidbits of information about the gameplay, looks like there are civilians, and they can be mindcontrolled into suicide bombers by the sectoids. Although it looks like you can disarm them, maybe, didn't work and trooper died. Troopers can go through glass just like the sectoid in the original sneak vid.

More to come tomorrow too (damn then, tell us now! )

I love how the new flying armor basically copies and adapts the floaters flying technology.
Also the new Chryssalids look alright.. have to see them in motion, though.
I kinda feared they might end up looking too much like the movie Alien.
Glad they chose a more unique approach to those classic aliens.

There is a gameplay video on youtube who shows "in motion" version of that screenshoots

Yes, it basically proved the majority of my speculations about the implementations of various elements that sparked controversial engagements.

You can tell I'm extremely happy can't you? When I saw the release date in another thread I was literally thinking "Be tomorrow, be tomorrow!"

Sounds like it can be brutal, which is good.
The description of the "mind-controlled" soldier sounded pretty good.
Was the Sectoid doing the mind-control unseen until afterwards, or had it previously been "revealed"?
    Skippable tutorial - good.
Victim of friendly fire - good (,well, good that it is in the game, not good for the victim.)
Grenades and Rocket launchers have free aim function - good.
Explosives can have unintended consequences - good.
Missions are not puzzles - good.
Soldier panic audio sounds interesting. "Game over, man!"
Chrysalids are in the game - good, although I didn't want to SEE them just yet. Looks creepy, scary but not sure about the glowing parts.
Promotions only occur when an alien is killed - good, very similar to the original.
    Overall very pleased.

Kind of upset that we saw Crystallids allready. Would be much more creepier if we met them in the game for the first time. (However we would bag devs to reveal them before release anyway ).

Very sweet terror mission atmosphere. Really exited!

I've read the OP's article, and found something I am not amused about:

You’d be forgiven for thinking those sectoids will always be there, ready for their close up like a less frightening Norma Desmond, but when you stumble across the next group they’ll react in the same way.
I mean it's good and movie when they introduce their appearance in that way they do, but every time in the same mission? I believe one time per specie per mission would be enough.

Imagine: you meet the first bunch of Sectoids, deal with them, then go forward, meet a new one and have just the same behaviour as minutes ago. It creates that feel of unnaturality of everything that's going on, that nobody likes I guess. Yet, I suspect it's only "working" moments and believe that developers will tide this up the release date (I believe in them).

    The following concerns me also:

As Alec has noted, the squaddies do, optionally, bark out the occasional ‘tag ‘em and bag ‘em’. It’s meatheaded and somewhat inappropriate. When actually playing the game those vocalised fist bumps are even more out of place...

All the info today is just.... is it Chryssmas?

I'm really happy with the way the Chryssalids look. They were my favorite (and also most hated) alien from the original and I was really hoping they would look less like crabs and more like horrifying aliens and Firaxis totally delivered. I'm totally sold on this game now. The Ethereals could look like My Little Pony characters and I would still pre-order this game! Ok maybe not, but you guys get the point.

i stopped reading...too many spoilers I know if this is being made by hardcore fans of the original it should be in good hands...and so far it looks like it is.

  18. #18
I have to say that Firaxis is doing a good job remaking all of the aliens from the original X-com, and their new and original aliens are all looking great too. I am even more excited about the game now though....

The good news is that grenades and rocket launchers have a free aim function, allowing for environmental destruction for reasons either strategic or exuberant.
    Why not every weapon?

I guess there is no need to aim machinegun, say to wall. Give me an example on what you will need to aim firearms exept the aliens themselves?

I think those are really, really minor gripes. The intro cutscenes are only like three seconds long. I spend longer waiting for Batman to finish a takedown in Arkham City.

Maybe the barks cause some dissonance, but they also go full blown panic too, so ultimately you're just going to have to weigh it.

But I don't want good sides of game overweight not-so-good sides of it. I'd like to have them all equally good and not annoying.

I just believe that there IS a way to make squaddies sound not so comic-like and that's what I'm saying.

If it can not penetrate the side of a car I doubt that it can penetrate a wall. Seems like they reworked the destrucion of enviroment since the first X-COM . I believe what can destroy the wall is now primary an explosive.

The only things that you might want to aim your firearms at are the refueling stations or other passive explosives like fuel tanks (if there are any other of that kind). Still we can't say cleary...

Wow, sounds bloody awesome! Am gonna read that right now.
It’s when we got inside the building, crashing through windows dramatically, that everything went pear-shaped. One soldier, a German, had survived but now his eyes were all glowy and weird, he was rasping and gurgling horrifying pleas for help. Some bloody sectoid was controlling his mind, that’s what I reckoned, but I dutifully followed the instructions, moved in close and tried to disarm him. He blew himself and one of my operatives to bits and there it was, cowering in the shadows, the little gray sod that had been ticking his brain stem. Helpful/obtrusive instructions continued to tell me what to do but only one of my squad survived, bringing the alien corpse back with him.
    Ohhhhhh wowww!!!!!

    1) Many of us weren't naysaying. We were concerned about vague and conflicting information.

    2) You suck it.

I'd say it looks more like an exterrior.

However, first picture is form, as Nosmirc said, the XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Base Walkthrough video 1:25:

    And I doubted it.

But then I looked at the IG Extended: First Look - XCOM: Enemy Unknown again and looks like it confirmed that it's an UFO exterrior 08:12:

Yet we don't know the type of that UFO, but we don't know wil there be types either.

It looks great - so much better than a static screen! I hope it's interactive - you can move your man right up to the tank and glare at the captor - who could either get even more mad (Muton), or just glare straight back at you (Sectoid, Ethereal).

October is going to be a fun time! Xcom EU, Fifa 13, F1 2012 - the list goes on!

You need to go ahead a little further. The screenshot you have there is about 1:20. 1:26 is clearly the interior.

Now stop spreading nonsense. We will be going into UFOs. Full stop.

Allright. I checked it double time. And noticed that this is indeed the interrior of the UFO (early I thought that it was something related to the base). I'll only be happy if we will be able to enter there.
