Gods and Kings: Which Civilization will you play first?

I'd just like to see what Civilization others are most looking forward to. If you feel like saying why as well, go ahead.

Hard to say... I think Netherlands, since I really want to explore navies and the new luxuries. I also LOVE unique improvements. Such a cool concept. They also have a unique Privateer -- a lot of cool stuff to experiment with there. Until I have a better handle on the game as a whole, I think I'm gonna hold off on doing the scenarios, though I am quite excited for them.

Which you'll play first is different to which you're most looking forward to.

I am most looking forward to the Maya, but I will probably be trying the Celts first to test out the religion system.

I suspect I'm not going to try any of the new civs immediately, actually. I'll probably play around with China, Japan, the French or the Incans.

Gameplay wise I see the Celts and Huns being very fun. Ethiopia could be neat for something different.

And yes, I agree that this topic is different and warrants its own thread.

Actually I may choose none of these, and instead jump straight into a scenario. I love scenarios.

Since I am looking forward to the new religion system, I will play with either the Celts or Byzantium. At the moment I tend to Byzantium, since I want the Celts as an AI.

I think I'll play as the Celts, then the Netherlands, and from there jump straight into the Renaissance scenario. With England, and I'll see if I can successfully complete the Crusades. Then I'll try the steampunk scenario (I always love a bit of steampunk).

I will play as Catherine. She will be the last Steam Achievement for leaders to get. Then Gustav, no doubt.

I'm sticking with the Celts for my first choice, but I like the Mayan ability, and I also like how Ethiopia can be played defencively - I like to play a defencive game a lot of the time.

Yes, the Dutch too! I liked it how in Civ 4 the units would speak in their language, so when you played as the Dutch they spoke Dutch - which was cool for me because I can understand a lot of Dutch. I like their ability too though.

I want to explore the religious system too so I'll be choosing the Celts. The Huns second for the early rush and the Netherlands third because they seem to have interesting uniques.

The only civ that we haven't really found out all of the details about is Byzantium...don't really know their UA, we know about the Dromen in name, don't know their other UU/UB...THAT might tip the scales their way? Maybe?

Sure, if it's a good one, or if it's something different. I've never had that much interest in the Byzantines to tell you the truth, but I could be swayed to change my mind if it's a good UA.

I know what I am going to write about in History School...they were my favourite in Civ 4 for their religious properties and the cataphract came around when I was just about to go on the offensive...after all of my building...I can't believe that you are so dismissive of a new civ, not like you...lol

I just realised that there's not a single civilisation that I wouldn't like to play at all in G&K!
And it's usually some 30% of the civs that I have no interest in playing at all.

  21. #21
I have fond memories of discovering Civ III, playing as Byzantines (had Theodora too!) and my Dromon fleets dominating the coastlines. I'll repeat that with GaK.

But damn there's so many other interesting Civs too..
A global trade Empire with Netherlands is one on the list too, in my head I also have tactics I'm gonna try with Sweden's special ability, they are going to be versatile one.

ALSO all the three Scenarios interest me a lot!

  22. #22
Is it just me or does Sweden sound like a very tentative choice for a One City Challenge, especially when pursuing Diplomatic Victory? Especially now, when research agreements (which are essential for games like this) require a DoF. Also, whenever I play with just one city, there inevitably comes a moment in the end-game, when I get Great Artists, but I cannot use them for anything else, but for Golden Ages, and from what we have seen, this option may not be available for the Great Persons any longer.

So yeah, I look forward to playing a Swedish Switzerland that installs peace around the globe.

I look forward to playing as a religious empire spreading enlightenment everywhere (Byzantium) as well... Not to mention how much I want to try to be an expansive warlord who spreads faith and kills infidels (Celtica). Man, 22nd of June seems too far away!

Huns definitely, I like their UA and am interested to see their unique units, especially their battering ram, also I like playing as Civs that have never been in the games before. If I got to pick a second choice it would probably be the Mayans (interesting UA that I would like to see how it plays out during the game)

Either Ethiopia or Celts, but I have a desire to play as the Aztecs, convert to Christianity, and raze all Spanish cities I see...

That would be cool if you could do a write up on the Byzantines - no one else has offered yet either.

I wouldn't say "dismissive"...I do think that they deserved a spot and I don't have anything against adding them, but they just aren't a favourite of mine. That doesn't mean I won't play as them either, since I'll probably give them a go at some point.

I picked Pre-G&K Civ. I'm actually not really all that excited about the expansion civs. The Celts are the only ones I'm feeling even vaguely interested in. Though, i must confess, i haven't really looked at any of the new civ's UA or UUs

I often pass judgement on something before I have any information on it... yea right... you might want to read some articles about the expansion. I am very excited about all of the expansion civs, excited about religion (the way it is implemented in this game), espionage, and all of the new wonders and their benefits

Im excited about the religion and espionage part of the expansion. And i'm sure that when i look there will be a new Civ that gets me excited about their UA and UU. I think its just that the newer Civs aren't anything i'm really historically interested in. If that makes any sense.

Definitely excited about the religion! I'm a bit worried about how espionage will work, as I'm worried it'll have some cons as well, but then again it might be really what the game needs.
I'm also very happy with seeing lots of new civs, and I'm looking forward to playing more than one of them!

I am quite unsure on what civ I'll venture into playing with first. It all depends on what their unique buildings and units will do.

I'm thinking Carthage the most at this point, simply because I have a passion for Phoenician and Mediterranean history, but I'd like to explore the new religion system as well. I have a feeling that the Mayan and Ethiopian UBs will boost faith as well. I'd like to do a game with Celts sometime, but not first, I have to see Boudicca with my own two eyes first... >.>

    At this point, probably Maya.

Funny thing about all this is I will play with all the civs. The first may just be the first one that shows up in the list and since it's alphabetical by leader I'm guessing Atilla will be the first in line. It's what I did with the vanilla civs

I will play with yhe celts (to explore the mechanics of religion in the deepest way) and all the other civs will be the ones that come with the expansion so I can know how do they work.

What? Mods aren't generally part of expansion...

Just venting here...I can't wait to play the Celts! I've been waiting so long for them to be added, as they've always been one of my top favourites.

I think they did a good job making them interesting. Pictish Warrior is a bit lame I think, though. Maybe design wise they'll be cool.

I don't know...Gaining faith for killing enemy units, and gaining a combat bonus outside your own territory sounds pretty handy for an early invasion.
