I strongly recomend getting rid of securerom in the install. Then everyone can play, not just people who have the internet.

Will most likely be Steamworks.
Live was pretty bad. Steam had problems too. Initial installation with setting up login etc having to be done once limits the pain.
Having to connect internet and login EVERY time to play (and being given the run around thru too many steps EVERY time (and not having it remember the login info require manual filling in EVERY time (BS2) is something I hope they dont do.
BS1 was so nice --- no login required, start game and go and no minutes waiting and no stuff to have to enter EVERY time.
I thought we got a promise from one of the company reps here that we WONT have any login required (or network?) (no excuse of 'achievements' or other MP related stuff (or 1999 mode glick) that they could use to justify steering you to their 'Store' and all that bother EVERY time .....
It will run on Steamworks.
Personally, I am absolutely fine with that because it means we don't have to put up with that glitchfest that is GFWL.
It's interesting how such a detail-oriented guy, such as yourself, becomes conveniently forgetful when one of your favorite topics comes up. Yes, you received a direct response from Irrational about this just a few months ago. HERE you go.
As as for your favorite quote about GFWL requiring login every time to play (nice to see you sticking with that--wasn't that the topic of your very first thread, too?), I'll repeat that it does not require a login to play in offline mode. Just because you couldn't get it to work doesn't mean it was designed that way. Most of us played offline just fine.
I commiserate with the annoyance of GFWL. Sure, I can choose to play in offline mode, but the the annoying Live popup will still appear every time I start the game so I have to click on it to get rid of it before I can actually start playing. Steam, on the other hand, has never caused me that kind of annoyance.
"""Just to clear up some confusion, 1999 Mode is simply an optional mode that does not require you to "sign-in" or have an internet connection to play. For more information, please refer to this post and the included links found here... http://irrationalgames.com/insider/y...for-1999-mode/"""
Technically it doesnt say anything about the regular game NOT requiring it (just the '1999 option'...). And my statement says that I remember somesuch being said (and I was assuming they were also promising the main game doesnt either).
Also its always good to ask again because these companies have more than once gotten a directive 'from on high' and change things like this suddenly. DLC is a significant part of profit generation these days and steering the other way means $$$$ that wont be going into certain peoples pockets - that those certain people probably dont like.
As for GFWL (on PC even after their patch) it still (as in yesterday) doesnt work to remember the auto login info or work offline (probably because its tied to the IE browser mechanism that I keep on high security so that it ditches persistant info and just buggy in general).
Just because I >>>> AND many other people <<<< had problems with it... The idea with software is to fix it so VERY few people have problems and the experience I had (and go back to look at all the others who complain about it) left a poor impression (sure they can blame it on Microsoft but THEY (IG/2K /whoever) were the ones who decided to use this buggy live system (and couldnt customize around it).
Even more fun - the DLC system. "Games for Windows Market Place" just updated with whatever the latest is (I had given up on it a year ago when I found it didnt work then either).
Downloading "Protector Trials" and upto 280MB of 970MB download and its aborted 6 times so far(oops 7 now just as Im typiing this -- gives an out of system memory error which is BS -- looks like a memory leak, how amateur - fail-a-tron of programming basics 101)
Restarting (and relogging in) it Over and Over. SERIOUSLY this is so lame they should be paying ME to be subjected to this buggy and very poor (for consumer grade) software of theirs .
(hmm just aborted yet again .... what will it be like if I DL soemthing 2GB long ??? and funny that little small print that says 'NO REFUNDS" ....even if you cant even get the DL to actually work???)
And yes what I thought I saw before, they are dependant on the IE installation and settings, so cranked up security will block their whole 'Marketplace' system.
I guess we get to see if Steam is less painful (the company loses $$$$ when the DLC system doesnt work --- whats that saying 'penny wise, pound foolish" ....
That sounds great. Hopefully the files won't be locked up as tight this time, maybe allow some modding or at least rendering? I'd assume not, but could always hope.
