Game gets stuck on multiplayer menu - Mac
been trying to start the game, but couldn't so far. i posted a ticket, but received no reply yet either, so maybe somebody here has a solution.
when i run the game, the logo animations run fine . after the last animation - evolution - i get a message telling me "the connection to the host has been lost. you will be returned to the multiplayer menu" with an OK button to press. after pressing the button, the screen goes to black for a few seconds and then the same message appears again. pressing OK this time just leaves the spinning comet on screen and nothing happens. i deleted the preferences folder, reinstalled the game, but still no go. console shows no certain message except for the install confirmation.
the game crashed first time i tried to run it - it didn't finish the animations. could this be a reason? why does it start or assume i want to start in multiplayer mode? any file or folder to delete to reset the game to default?

Reason: added system specs
I had exactly the same problem.
Contacted support and they said it's something to do with the DMZ. Which if you know what you're doing can be configured with your router, or by your ISP.
I changed my internet connection from being directly connected to the modem to being connected through a wireless router. Solved the problem and boots right in. Like you said though it shouldn't happen as the main game doesn't even need the internet.
i already am on a wireless router, and i have tried to run the game with my airport off, but got the same result.
glad it worked out for you, but for me i was disappointed by the support - lack of - that i got.
how can i trust 2k and a buy a game from them again when i never received a follow-up from their support? you're the only follow-up or solution that i received after i posted my thread 6 weeks ago.
