This is a fan-driven campaign to encourage Bioware/EA to create a true good quality ending DLC(not just some "extended cut") for the game Mass Effect 3.

Turn it on/Turn it off for Bioware

    Facts:

    - Whether you are hopeful or cynical about the new Ending DLC, one thing is clear: it's Bioware's last, best chance to win back the fanbase.

    - It is in everyone's interest that the DLC be a fitting conclusion to this amazing series.

    - Bioware is currently in the process of finalizing plans for the DLC, including allocating resources for its creation.

    - Because many people have not been playing the SP campaign, EA may have the mistaken impression that SP is a "lost cause" and so may not fund the Ending DLC properly -- especially since they are committed to giving it to us for free.

    - EA/Bioware can monitor the number of people playing Mass Effect 3 through Origin, and we can use this to give them relevant data about ourfuture buying habits.

    ---------------------------------------

We propose giving EA and Bioware immediate feedback on the importance of the Ending DLC, so they can allocate sufficient resources to make a quality product.

To that end, we propose the following campaign:

We will turn ON our single player game during a pre-defined period to show EA/Bioware the number of passionate fans who love the series andwho will continue to buy their products IF the DLC provides a satisfactory ending.

We will then turn OFF our game and refuse to play for a pre-defined time period to give EA/Bioware a clear idea of the potential loss of custom and support they will suffer if the DLC is NOT satisfying.

    How to take part:

    - Turn ON the Mass Effect 3 single player campaign at some point during Saturday, April 28th (Pacific Time/GMT -7). It does not need to be on for the entire 24 hour period.

    - Tweet Bioware/EA (#turnMEon) to let them know you are playing in order to show them the number of fans who support them. Post an after action report on the BSN.

    - Turn OFF Mass Effect 3 do not play either single or multiplayer for the entirety of Sunday, April 29th (Pacific Time/GMT -7). The game must be shut off for the entire 24 hour period. Do not login to the BSN forum during this time. If you have an iPhone or iPad, turn off the Datapad app using the orange Origin circle in the upper right hand corner.

    - Tweet Bioware/EA again (#turnMEoff) to let them know you are demonstrating their potential loss of customers. This is a good time to let them know if you're happy with closure or want new endings.

That's all! The greater the difference between the two days, the more incentive EA will have to fund the DLC properly. Bioware is more than capable of giving us an amazing conclusion to this saga if they have the financial support to do it right.

    FAQs:

    - Who are you and what is your motivation?

We are fans of the Mass Effect franchise who were disappointed by the way the ending of Shepard's story was handled. We want to maximize the chances that fans will be satisfied by the Ending DLC. While many of us are Retake/HTL members, we do not claim to speak for the majority of either group.

    - Retake has already won. What is the point of this?

While the production of a free Ending DLC is a step in the right direction, the announcement Bioware made was vague and could apply equally well to either a multi-hour playable extravaganza or a handful of epilogue slides stating things like: "ReaperGarrus lived for many happy days on Gilligan's planet before he finished consuming Tali's dead body and died of starvation." Our goal is to help Bioware get the funding it needs to produce the former.

    - Why didn't you specify what a "satisfactory ending" is?

The fanbase is diverse and not everyone wants the same thing. (However, we suspect very few people will be moved to boycott Bioware if MORE CHOICES are provided.) Also, we trust that the company which made the Tuchanka missions is more than capable of pleasing the majority of fans if they internally peer-review their work. It is not our intent to demand specific plot points or outcomes. Bioware has over 600 pages of fan feedback and multiple polls to point them in the right direction.

    - Why should I take part in Turn it On/Turn it Off?

If EA is presented with clear evidence that the quality of the Ending DLC will mean the difference between regaining supportive fans and driving away their customers, we believe they will finance a better product. It is imperative for people who can't currently bring themselves to replay the SP campaign to stand up and be counted instead of being written off as a "lost cause." Also, it's important that the "wait and see" crowd make their voices heard now while we still have time to effect positive change. Finally, it's free and easy to do.

    - Why are you trying to destroy Bioware?

We're not. We want them to make an Ending DLC that is worthy of the rest of the game and then reap the rewards of their success. To that end, many of us will encourage our friends who haven't played Mass Effect 3 to download the demo (</a><a>http://masseffect.com/about/demo/) during Phase 1. We are more than willing to bring new customers to the franchise if the ending is fixed properly.

-I already uninstalled my game, now what?

Download the Mass Effect 3 demo (</a><a>http://masseffect.com/about/demo/) during Phase 1 and play it. Uninstall it before Phase 2.

    - The "Patch" killed my XBox! How can I participate?

You should still be able to download the Mass Effect 3 demo (</a><a>http://masseffect.com/about/demo/) during Phase 1 and play it. If that doesn't work, go ahead and Tweet Bioware during the times you would have turned on/off and tell them you are unable to play.

    - Do I need an internet connection in order to participate?

Yes. Remember to set "Upload gameplay feedback" to "ON" in the "online options." If EA can't see you playing, your voice is not being heard. This will give them info on what parts of the game you like best.

-Can't I just set "upload gameplay feedback" to "OFF" and continue to play during the OFF period?

No. Even though you will not be giving EA specific information on what missions you are doing, you will still be counted as playing ME3. You must log out of Origin and turn your game off for the entire OFF period.

-I haven't been able to play the SP game since I finished it. What should I do?

Try replaying your favorite parts of the game. That will give the developers more data on what fans liked. If you can't stand that, just start the game from the beginning and walk away for a while. Remember to turn it off before Phase 2.

    - Can I play multiplayer instead?

By all means, play multiplayer IN ADDITION to the single player game, but the purpose of this initiative is to prove that fans will return to the single player campaign if the ending is satisfactory.

    - Do I have to turn my game on at a specific time? Does it have to be on for 24 hours?

No, just turn it on at any time during Phase 1 for as long as you like. You DO need to turn it off before Phase 2 starts and keep it off for the full 24 hour period or longer.

    - I don't live in the Pacific Time Zone. When should I turn my computer ON/OFF?

See our list of dates/times: (THANK YOU Aderyn_brea!)

-I hate Twitter/don't have a Twitter account. Does that matter?

No, you don't have to use Twitter. It's just another way to remind Bioware that the campaign is going on. Other ways you can register your support include going to the Facebook event site (</a><a>https://www.facebook.com/events/4107...an_user_joined) and posting your after action reports here at the BSN on Saturday. (Remember to avoid the BSN forums on Sunday.)

    - I love the original endings and don't support this campaign at all.

We're glad you enjoyed the endings. You may be interested to know that we recommend participants also avoid the BSN forums during Phase 2. It may be the only day you ever get to post "I love the endings!" threads

without being asked to explain why. ^_^ By all means, encourage all the anti-ending members to join us! We make a statement, and you get some peace and quiet: it's a Win-Win situation.

    - I hate the original endings and want to support this campaign!

Welcome aboard! You can help by spreading the word about this campaign, recruiting your friends to play during Phase 1 and by doing something fun and non-ME-related during Phase 2. If you know a foreign language,

translate and post this initiative to foreign gaming sites. Print this out and leave it at your local gaming store. Spread the word here at HoldTheLine, the BSN forums, RetakeME3, Reddit, deviantart, fanfic.net, Youtube, your personal blog, and any gaming sites you can think of. Remember, it's not too late to save THIS Cycle!

    - How will we know if it worked?

Frankly, it is unlikely Bioware will acknowledge this event or make our numbers public even if we have a high turnout. That is why it is important for you to also make our numbers known at the Facebook event site (</a><a>https://www.facebook.com/events/4107...an_user_joined) and at the BSN forum. Make sure to post an after action report to the BSN forum to show our numbers on Day 1 and scrupulously avoid the forums on Day 2. The final proof will be when the Ending DLC comes out, but hopeful signs to watch for in the meantime include hearing in the next few weeks that the Ending DLC is delayed, or confirmation that voice actors have been contacted to work on the DLC.</a>

If only it was right before Xmas, you guys would probably be writing to Santa Claus asking him to make Bioware change the ending to exactly what each one of you individually want. That would cost the ME fans some milk and cookies to leave out for him though, probably complain about having to do that.

Upvote for you, Mister Benigncancer. LOL

    Indeed, indeed.

When it takes that much text to justify your movement, particularly as it involves a pure luxury item like video games....I just don't know. Donate a buck to starving kids. Or to the humane society. Or help a senior citizen by mowing their lawn. Any of those things will make you feel better than getting the "perfect" ending to ME3.

Pretty sure you guys all nailed it. This is probably one of the dumbest things I've ever seen, definitely dropped gamers a notch or three in my book. And given that I consider myself a gamer, that kinda sucks. I'd hit somebody if I could. Get over it and move on

Yeah I agree a bit. A bit off topic, since I started reading more game media and participated in the gaming community like being a part of a forum. You start seeing stuff which shakes your head and says I'm in the same hobby as the same losers who send death threats to developers - http://kotaku.com/5904367/another-da...ke-video-games . You get reminded that their are people in your hobby that are not socially or psychologically immature or developed - may never get there as well. I posted this in the other ME controversy thread but it's relevant here Pachter on fan's who voted EA worst company in America - http://www.gametrailers.com/video/la...-attack/729370 . Every hobby probably has its Loser Brigade, just know your not one of them.

Well its nice to know bringing up negative stereotypes for no good reason from most people hasnt changed(not that I'm surprised), but heres a simple solution, if YOU disagree with this movement/do like ME3's current ending then you do not have to be a part of this event whatsoever. Why you would come here just to post comment after comment claiming that any players disliking the endings are "whiners" or a "vocal minority" and, while accusing the other side of this, arrogantly assume you are in the majority only shows how childish and socially undeveloped YOU are.

That aside, I welcome anyone who wishes to take part in this event, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to send me a message or take a look at the original post- <a>http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/355/index/11600342/30#11696563

I have to say, I'm surprised by the amount of negativity in here. I'm not particularly invested in this but I can see where the upset fans are coming from. While I'm not tearing my hair out, the way ME 3 was designed has given me pause to playing through it again on Insanity as I did with the former games.

It kinda comes off as a chain letter and I'm not sure why they couldn't just have people send Bioware letters instead, but playing with server numbers and future sales projections may help speak the corporate language. If indeed this group is a minority it will bear no fruit. On the flip side, the opposite just might be vocalized, and they may just get their point across. What's the harm in trying?

I actually don't see anyone calling you whiners/vocal minority in this thread anyway, but its good that you see yourselves for what you are . Self realization is the first step to getting help. When you post something to a forum you should expect to receive feedback whether positive or negative, if you can't handle negative feedback then best to keep bouncing your ideas off Mom, other immediate family, or pets.

I didn't throw out any insults or stereotypes, but if it makes you feel better--they were implied.

I think a big part of the negativity comes from two mindsets:

    1) Disgust with the ever-growing belief among some fans that THEY decide how games are created. And asking a developer to go back and change a game is repugnant to some of us. We believe that developers are artists and find this to be a dangerous trend.

    2) A belief that this kind of time and effort could better be used on more worthy causes than tweaking a luxury item.

As for "if you don't like it just ignore it". No. Because you are not just some cause trying to improve the world, like someone getting a petition to plant more trees or something. You are trying to set a precedent where fans get to dictate how artists work. And that sucks. HARD. So deal with the negativity. We think you're wrong. And we have every right to voice our opinions, too.

I just don't get where the sense of entitlement comes from. What makes you think you have the right to demand anything? There are countless examples across all different mediums where critics/fans were unhappy or upset with how it all played out. Hell, even Batman: Arkham City had people crying (literally crying) because of how it ended. But most just accepted Rocksteady's story and moved on, because its exactly that - Their story.

If I had to sum up people complaining about this, it would be something along the lines of whiny self-entitled little ☺☺☺☺☺es who think everyone owes them something, and if its not how they think it should be they'll just cry and raise hell. And I have absolutely zero tolerance for that kinda ☺☺☺☺, and would even go so far as to say its people like that who are ruining this country

Try to understand you have no right to change the game. Try to understand there are members of the Mass Effect fan base and probably your movement that are tarnishing the reasonable gamers out there by feeding into those negative childish stereotypes you say we are labeling you. Mass Effect Fans sent death threats over the Day One DLC - http://n4g.com/news/951277/bioware-s.../com#c-6335018 . I can only imagine what sort of vitriol crap was sent over the ending.

As Dirtytreva said Haters gonna hate, so Bioware should just ignore you!

    OK everyone just SHUT UP!!!

for the haters of change, if dosent bother you than just ignore quit spreadin hate.

for the haters of the ending, dont try and push your thoughts on everyone else, (not you theidealist, you chill, you just wanted people to know bout whats goin on).

as i said, haters gonna hate, so just ignore them, that goes for all yall. that and haters are your #1 fans

You know he's a mod right? Cumulative points don't mean much. For instance, you actually have a higher post per day ratio than felonious. I think it's a safe assumption that if you believe you have a life outside of these forums, so does he.

Seeing as your new to the forums you should probably familiarize yourself with the forum rules - http://irrationalgames.com/community.../forum-rules-2

You don't give orders on these forums -- if anyone comes close to giving orders around here who isn't an I.G employee - its one of the moderators - which are Japester or myself - we don't even tell people to shut up.

Some of which you are saying could be taken as a personal insult to me (calling me d-bag ) for all the banter going back and forth, personal insults/attacks have been pretty much held back. So if you have nothing productive to add then step away from the name calling and order giving in this thread and future threads.

Realize though that if I thought myself King I would be the one going around demanding changes for stuff in game's I don't like, yet don't see me doing that !

^^^ Thanks, its not about talking nice and slow so my brain doesn't xplode, its typing and talking like you have something greater than a 5th grade education level. So I appreciate you at least trying to express your thoughts a bit clearer.

Once again your in no position to tell anyone to shut up, people are expressing there views both for and against this action. I don't agree with this action but you don't see me telling the Idealist to shut up or even abusing my moderator power and locking/deleting this thread . This being said if you have any further issue, feel free to private message me, as this thread is getting a bit off topic.

The difference isn't important, my point was you said he had no life when you're technically more active. Just saying we all have lives outside of these forums, no point in playing "who's the bigger loser".

    Back on topic

japester said:I think a big part of the negativity comes from two mindsets:

    1) Disgust with the ever-growing belief among some fans that THEY decide how games are created. And asking a developer to go back and change a game is repugnant to some of us. We believe that developers are artists and find this to be a dangerous trend.

    2) A belief that this kind of time and effort could better be used on more worthy causes than tweaking a luxury item.

And I get that, I do, but when you promise people A and deliver B, I don't think it's out of line for the people to demand A which they payed for and were originally promised. Again, not overly invested in this (not to appear a fence sitter) but I can see why people are upset. It would be one thing if people approached the Wachowski (sp?) <s>brothers</s> siblings and told them to rewrite the Matrix sequels. That's not fair. But when the element that sets your game apart is withheld from a fanbase at arguably the most critical moment with promises of just the opposite, I can see them wanting some sort of satisfaction. I agree that it could set a dangerous trend as you will always have a group dissatisfied with a portion of any project, but I think it is justifiable in some instances. I am also curious to see how such an event turns out as it might yield a ballpark figure of how large the dissented group is.

But even if it was only a group of 10 people, would they still not be in the right in their demands/efforts if they were promised one thing and given another? Or do you feel that the interview quotes were taken out of context, the people supplying the info weren't high enough on the food chain, the quotes were vague and open to interpretation, etc? I'm not trying to be patronizing or sarcastic; honestly asking.

As far as #2 though, couldn't the same be said of all of us and our varying hobbies? People care about and spend time on what they love.

    @laforza

Don't ever worry about asking me for clarification or challenging my beliefs, sir! That's what a discussion forum is all about, isn't it?

I really don't have a dog in this particular fight, either. I haven't played ME3, nor did I follow the press leading up to it. I agree we can fall into a gray area, but I think an unsatisfactory ending is probably more towards one end of a spectrum. I mean, I've seen games that literally don't work due to bugs--that would be a case for pressuring the developers. But this isn't a broken product. It's a case of fans wanting something different. And traditionally that doesn't involve badgering the artist to change their vision. People are free to express their discontent, but the demands and threats are a bit much. Where does it end?

We already have a huge number of unscrupulous gamers who feel fully justified stealing games that disappoint them in the slightest way ("I don't like how they handled the DRM on a game 3 years ago." "I don't like that this was released two days later in my region than in another." "I don't like how they changed the in-game font in this sequel.") I've seen hundreds upon hundreds of ridiculous comments like these. And now, besides casual theft, they have to deal with people demanding changes? In my opinion, the gaming community has moved farther and farther into extremes. Complaints are constant. And nearly every game released has disappointed or overpromised in some form or fashion. That's the nature of the beast.

As for #2, yes, it's also a matter of degrees. Passion is a good thing--when appropriate--but I think this is going a bit too far.

On the subject of 'The Mass Effect 3 ending." =

Its Science Fiction folks. Science Fiction isn't usually that good at pulling off endings. Star Trek Enterprise didn't exactly go off on a high note. Neither did the re-imaged Battlestar Galactica (Starbuck - wtf?).

TOO BE HONEST I really don't know why 'haters are still hating' because Bioware are actually giving you a new ending. You even got the BBC to report about it!

    Basically, You've won.

@Dirtytreva, No worries, though I would never let anyone not yourself use your account

@Japester, I'll pass your message along to Felonius!

    @Laforza, some points to make

1 -- I think their are some areas to be concerned with this action giving an accurate result. I'm not sure how detailed Origin tracking to differentiate who beat the game but they talk about downloading the demo and playing that. Couldn't anyone just do that who hasn't beaten the game. I'm sure friends of people in this action can be recruited to do this and anyone who probably gets off on the idea they can somehow change the game will jump at the opportunity. I don't know if their can be really any validity to these results of those who are really unhappy about the ending.

2 -- Game Developers routinely promise A and deliver B. Prime Example is Peter Molyneux who over promised many features for the Fable series from one game to the next and failed to deliver. He actually commented on such lies and his reasoning was to keep journalists awake.

Check these two links for more info and examples of his lies - http://www.neoseeker.com/news/16034-...nalists-awake/

    http://www.gamesradar.com/molyneux-vs-molyneux/

People perhaps started avoiding his games or if the game was good and for most of the Fable series, many people would call them good to very good would deal with their shortcomings. You didn't see anything like this nor have you seen it anywhere else.

3 -- Bioware has already said they are addressing the issue, this is overkill and now their trying to influence the FREE CONTENT which is being created by saying, Hey play you favorite level so they can see what you like. These people don't subscribe to the notion that game developers make the game and game players play the game.

4 -- Their is a difference between being passionate about a hobby and obsessive and letting it run your life. You can put money on it that some not saying ALL of the people in this movement are the same ones who voted EA worst company in America and have sent death threats/insults over the day one DLC From Ashes and the ending. THAT IS SAD BEHAVIOR, end of story I know your reasonable and see valid points made so not saying you think that is acceptable but just stressing to other's how ridiculous this has become for some people.

I make no qualms about it, I hope they fall flat on their face so they can stop worrying about Commander Shepard's life story and start living their own. If their met with any success they will be emboldened to start doing this for anything & everything which disappoints wasting time and hurling more vitriol crap at the developers who make the games. I know for my part depending on how far this goes and how far Bioware caves, I won't be buying and supporting Bioware for selling out its creative vision, you won't see me coming up with manifesto on the forums to how I'm going to convey my point.

I agree and I think that another method, say, writing a letter, would be a better tactic. But the whole movement is probably spearheaded by young adults under 20 so it doesn't surprise me if they didn't look too far ahead. But they're just going at it the best way they know how.

felonious said: Game Developers routinely promise A and deliver B. Prime Example is Peter Molyneux who over promised many features for the Fable series from one game to the next and failed to deliver. He actually commented on such lies and his reasoning was to keep journalists awake.

See, I think that's just unacceptable. Going to add that to the list of reasons I won't be playing any more Fable games after Fable 2.

felonious said:You didn't see anything like this nor have you seen it anywhere else

If you're referring to fans making demands, I agree. Which is actually one of the reasons I think their claims have merrit. They feel that the gap between what they were promised and what was delivered was so wide, that it surpased any sort of forgivable developer indescretion and decided to act upon it.

felonious said:3 -- Bioware has already said they are addressing the issue, this is overkill and now their trying to influence the FREE CONTENT

I'm honestly undecided about this. In some regards it does seem like overkill but on the other hand, if Bioware messed up bad enough in the first place to even have to address this, they might use the same formula for its rectification. Which could possibly mean it will just be a band aid solution generated by the same folks that let their fans down so much earlier. Part of me thinks any sort of reminder that this "second chance" is important to a bunch of folks isn't necessarily a bad concept.

felonious said: If their met with any success they will be emboldened to start doing this for anything & everything which disappoints wasting time and hurling more vitriol crap at the developers who make the games

I agree, I think it will start a trend. But as sad as that is I don't think it absolves Bioware from addressing their mistake.

felonious said: I know for my part depending on how far this goes and how far Bioware caves, I won't be buying and supporting Bioware for selling out its creative vision

I actually find that pretty interesting, I hadn't considered that Bioware may lose business for this reason.

All in all, I'm just disappointed that nobody on the project saw any of this coming. I mean, I felt that video with the "10 things we dislike about the ending" was pretty much spot on. It really surprises me that none of their testing groups brought any of this to their attention. Or maybe they did and it was deemed unimportant or a drastic minority. I just can't help but think a massive corner was cut somewhere and all this hoopla could have been avoided. But now, especially if this starts a trend, the effects will ripple into other projects.

There's a lot to read here to continue the conversational momentum, but I'll just pitch in the fact that I think there's a lot to be said about a company that will offer additional content for a game based on this kind of feedback. My hat is off to BioWare for this, as they're obviously proving a huge degree of commitment to all of its fanbase.

I really enjoyed the ending that I saw (I chose left), but would love to see more of the character development fleshed out. I wouldn't petition against BioWare for the extra character development, but if they're looking to do it, I'll take it.

I thought it was weird seeing Drew Karpyshyn leave so close to the end of ME3's development. It sounded like he had some great ideas brewing that didn't see the light of day.

Either way, BioWare is really reaching out. A lot of people hated Episodes 1-3 of Star Wars, so I'm not surprised to see people hating the ending to this trilogy. If people want to campaign about it, that's cool as long as it's done in a way that expresses respectful disagreement. Let's not have any more chaos like that Hepler incident. That ☺☺☺☺ was embarrassing.
