Hey, you know "Moira" and "Patrick", Atlas' beloved wife and child in Bioshock 1? Well did you notice the posters in Fort Frolic, "Patrick & Moira, A Musical, The Story of Love After Death". funny...

Why the hell couldn't he just make up some names?

Ragingmudcrab- Now I don't have an explanation for Atlas the character, but for the game I'm guessing it was meant to give the observant players a hint that Atlas wasn't all that he seemed to be. There were a number of others, naturally, but still.

And I have seen people do that sort of thing, so it's not completely unbelievable.

    Accidental double post. My apologies.

Nice catch, and thx for bringing it up, sometimes the little things you find out after you play the game which you may have not noticed make, it so much better looking back at it.

Yeah, that's definitely the narrative reason. I just think it's funny how stories like this can get away with things that realistically don't make much sense.

what doesnt make since, I think it was pretty clever of Atlas, It's almost as if he was walking through Fort Frolic when Jack arrived in Rapture and looked around for an idea to get Jack on his team, on the wall he sees a poster " Patrick & Moira". He smiles.

Think about it as if you were Fontaine. Making up two names would be the much more sensible option than to copy ones from a poster that everybody could see. That's like asking to be caught. Frank couldn't necessarily know how observant Jack was. When you think about it, using the names on the poster would probably require more effort than making them up, because he would have had to go out of his way to look at the poster, while his imagination is instantaneous.

I wonder if it Johny's death was in his plans.

He never saw it coming, although he did have a gun in his hand which he should've used.

I think he was talking about the man who died in the very beginning of the game, when you were still in the bathosphyere. Remember him? He got killed by that splicer when he was supposed to be getting you, even though he had a gun.

Anyway, I did see the poster the first walkthrough; my sister pointed it out to me when she was watching me play. Lol, though my first thought wasn't 'OMG he took those names from a play! They're fake!' it was 'Why are his son and wife lovers in a play?'. It took me a second to figure out what was going on...

@stupidassasin: GREAT FIND! First I've heard of it

    @ragingmudcrab:

I think creators of great works of fiction (whether they be realistic, sci fi or whatever) commonly use names they've seen or encountered. And Atlas/Fontaine using names of the people in the play he saw (even if he just saw the poster) most definitely adds more realism to the game, for me at least.

    Just some examples:

Christopher Nolan used the names of people he knew for Inception and that was a 10! Groening used family members and friend's names for The Simpsons and that's done alright... Heck, even Bioshock 2's Minerva's Den DLC had a ton of tributes to real people...go HERE but it has a ton of spoilers if you haven't played it, including a tribute to our own community manager, which makes me wonder what'll happen in Infinite with Mr. Gaynor now at Irrational.

Anyway...These are great stories but the names of the characters are grounded in real life...so Atlas doing that (as he had to put on a great story about saving his family and getting to Ryan and doing this and that until the twist)...for me, most definitely works...and IG doing that and making a jabroni like me think about that...is flipping amazing!

You gotta remember that Jack himself isn't a character; he's a puppet that's controlled by you, the player, and Jack's ability of observation is YOUR ability of observation. They designed Jack to pretty much BE the player...so it was a smart move on their part, because most of the players didn't catch on, so it's a safe bet to say that if Jack were a real person, he wouldn't catch on either.

Not to mention when you're running around a city fighting for your life, you usually wouldn't stop and look at the posters on the wall. You'd be...well, fighting for your life.

I understand why they did and it makes sense as a work of fiction, but I just can't really get around it when I sit and think about it. It's not so much like Nolan or Groening using people' real names; they're creating fiction to entertain, not to trick someone.

Really I'm just nitpicking. Same thing I do with the Vita-Chambers. It's whatever, doesn't take away from the game at all.

    *THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Wait, if Atlas just made up the names, then why does he have portraits of him standing next to a woman and child, in a portrait in his office? (They're in Bioshock 2, but I don't remember what level...) Could he have just asked a couple of strangers to stand with him or something?

Personally, I'm thinking of a different (although highly unlikely) approach to this: perhaps Atlas really did have (or at least know) Patrick and Moira, whether he cared for them or not, and when Cohen somehow heard about what happened, he immediately decided to make a play of it for splicers (remember, he wasn't exactly too right in the head) and put up a poster or two. Again, it's very unlikely; but then why would Andrew Ryan intentionally blow up one of his submarines if he'd surely know Atlas has no family in the first place? If Atlas really did make up the family and there was nobody inside of the submarine, wouldn't Ryan perhaps want Jack to see that and turn against Atlas if not join Ryan?

Anyways, sorry for writing so much. It was my first post and I felt like writing a lot, lol.

There has been speculation, old chap, that the "family" in the portrait was Tenenbaum and Jack.

How very "Usual Suspects" of Atlas. Nice catch.

This clever poster can actually been seen in the Welcome To Rapture level somewhere after the big daddy destroys that splicer directly in front of you.

He make up names because is Frank Fontaine that is showned on that picture, and Atlas what is his new name with new face, thanks to Dr. Steinman that says he has a "family" and Ryan doesn't know anything about who this Atlas guy is so he belive is his family.
