There is so much going on in this game.. it is a bit intimidating.. I think it says something that I've played many Bethesda games, and have not finished any of them...

Hopefully in Skyrim we will be able to read the shocking conclusion of the best storyline in all of Oblivion with "The Lusty Argonian Maid: Part II"

i wasted a lot of time playing oblivion on the PS3-- when i encountered the cure for vampirism bug, i was so annoyed, i stopped playing. The bugs really bugged me. If i play Skyrim, i'm going to wait a year for game updates.

I stopped playing Fallout New Vegas due to a bug that crashed my game whenever I bought certain items from a vendor... I swore I would wait before buying another Bethesda game... But.. There were a lot of teasers and trailers.. And days between then and now.. Eventually it ended up in my amazon cart and was per ordered...

    I am weak..

If the game has this, I am 100% satisfied. I don't even care about anything else.

This thread has me tempted to try this game...

I stopped playing Elder Scrolls (oh my gosh, that was what...15 years ago? 16?) after I put a year into Arena and couldnt beat it, then another 6 months into Daggerfall, but the bugs kept freezing my computer. I do remember being blown away by the amazing graphics on Area. So superior to any other video game I had played before. My how things have changed...

These games are so enormous, I could get lost for hours... The graphics sure are beautiful, though!

Even though I played the demo at PAX, I haven't been following Skyrim closely. Not that I'm the type to overreact at every new article (SPOILERSESES!!!! ) and want to remain "pure". But I guess because I know I'll be buying it eventually, so I don't need any new temptation. I've skimmed articles but haven't seen many videos.

I watched the latest interview with Todd Howard where he mentioned some new dragon shouts. Now, I don't know what I was expecting from dragon shouts--something really big, perhaps? Like a major "use it very rarely to completely obliterate a bunch of guys" thing. But quite a few of the shouts looked like plasmids....with yelling. One shout was used to freeze a single enemy in combat. So instead of just casting it, your character is yelling again and again...while casting it.

Some, like the one where you go ethereal and can survive a fall off a mountain, look really cool. But is anyone else worried that constantly shouting to do what so many other games do without such fanfare (magic attacks, plasmids, etc) will get annoying?

That's an interesting point, japester. I'm hoping it will serve as a more visceral quality to unleashing a weapon on somebody. As long as the voice is right for the character. We definitely want it to match the action so it doesn't get annoying or take you out of the game. I'm surprised Bethesda's finally giving the protagonist a voice at all. I've always wished they would give your character a voice, so if this is their first step in doing that, I'm excited to see how that turns out.

****SPOLIERS ABOUT SHOUTS IN THIS POST****

@japester You can also cast standard elemental attacks like fire and electricity, similar to plasmid casting in Bioshock, with magicka on the fly in Skyrim. In fact, Todd Howard cited Bioshock plasmid-casting as inspiration for Skyrim's spell-casting.

Dragon Shouts it seems, are powerful tools outside of magic which can instantly sway the direction of a battle. That ice shout can turn everything before you (not just one enemy) into ice cubes, and the fire shout actually allows you to breathe out a blanket of fire from your mouth.

Besides more powerful elemental attacks, there are special shouts like become ethereal, or shouts where you'll be able to teleport behind an enemy for stealth kills, or slow down time to deal with multiple enemies more efficiently.

There are also area of effect shouts which can obliterate a bunch of enemies like you were talking about. There's "Fus Ro Dah" which basically works like a heavy jedi force push, ragdoll tossing everyone in front of you, and there's Stormcall which turns the sky above you black tossing thunderbolts down on enemies.

Then there's the ability to shout for a dragon buddy to come down from the mountains and help you take on baddies. There are 24 dragon shouts, more than half of which haven't been revealed yet.

I think the shouts will come in handy when your getting overwhelmed or are in danger of losing a fight. I don't think they're meant to be used constantly like regular spells.

Good to know. I guess using different words may allow for more powerful versions, like the ice attack going from just one enemy to an area affect? I don't mind the shouting aspect for a big spell, but for the most recent video it was shout-shout-shout during combat. Hopefully that will only be the case early on, when your shouts are weaker.

The last one you mentioned, which was also featured in the video, is the one that sounds most exciting. I can't wait to use it in a town or other crowded location. LOL

And just for forestall any complaints against benigncancer's post, TECHNICALLY none of this information constitutes a spoiler. Todd Howard, much like Ken Levine, is a very bright fellow. He wouldn't knowingly release an actual spoiler to his own game. This is just info. Knowing it won't ruin the game experience for anybody.

Once the game drops and people start playing, then actual spoilers might crop up and should be spoiler tagged as appropriate out of respect for your fellow fans.

I know a bunch of us are playing Skyrim right now. What does everyone think?

Being on a tight budget, I almost never buy games when they first hit the shelves. I have no problem patiently waiting for price drops. But BioShock was a first-day exception. And Skyrim was, too....sorta. Heh. I rented it the day it dropped and got hooked so bad that I had to run out and buy it.

I'm playing on PS3, and it's buggy as hell. Nothing that forced me to reload a save, but plenty of objects getting caught in the environment and weird physics. Still, the game has sucked me into its world quite thoroughly. It's been a long, long time since I've been content to just walk around, curious about everything in the world. There is just enough difficulty to keep it interesting without being frustrating.

Tonight I completed the toughest battle so far (collecting on a bounty). I went through several of my best potions, plus a strategic leveling (full heal FTW!), and I still barely squeaked by. Feeling obstinate, I loaded myself and my follower down with loot and started the slow crawl back to Whiterun. I figured I'd sell this off and call it a night. At worst we might get harassed by a few wolves. WRONG.

Almost instantly we were set upon by a dragon! This was only the second dragon I'd seen--and the first I would be tackling on my own. It was a tough fight--made tougher by my slow movement speed--but we won. I was so tired that I grabbed the loot from the dragon's body and staggered back to Whiterun in a daze. Only when a couple of bandits jumped me did I realize I was alone. Wha-?! I made short work of them, stole their horse, and rode back. Sure enough, my faithful follower, the same one I'd used exclusively up till now, was dead. The dragon had been too much for him.

I know this is a game. And I'm not above reloading a save to get a good NPC back. But this just felt right. His sacrifice was forever tied to that trial by fire (literally!). And it gave the moment a real emotional impact.

Skyrim has delivered quite a few moments like that already. I can't wait to see what else it has in store for me.

I picked up the PS3 version, it seems like a console designed game. It is buggy as hell. The PS3 can't seem to handle when I shout. As soon as I press the button, it freezes for a sec. It also seems that it can't handle 5 or six toons at once in a fight. The frame rate drops to the ground. It also locks up when I run. The frame rate goes up and down just when I'm walking around. Had 2 crashes, and am running dual saves(FO3 corrupted on me). 2 times I loaded into a mess of incomplete data. It's Bethesda, and it's what I've come to expect. I also don't think the dual wielding system works good.

On the bright side: it's fantastic. More like Fallout than Morrowind. The crafting is much improved from Oblivion. I too am content with just screwing around in Skyrim, ignoring quests. Loving the addition of dragons. Giving orders to NPC's is nice too. The lore is solid, and at no time did I think "why am I doing this quest?" Great voice acting and audio. Did a great job with snow, but some parts it just looked like I was playing in black and white.

I've had some awesome moments so far. Took down 5 dragons. Those giants pack a punch, one knocked me to orbit. Cleared a bunch of dungeons, pretty linear but awesome design. I was completing the quest "Innocence lost" for this child. While at his house, I tried to pickpocket his dad while he slept. He woke up swinging and I panicked. I burped the flame shout and killed him. Then his wife was slicing at me. In a panic I whacked her too. So every time I go to that town, Bethesda throws that kid at me making me feel horrible. He cowers if fear at the sight of me. Tells me "I hope monsters eat you". I still feel bad.

Last night I bought a house in Riverun, just down the street from the general store. I added an alchemy lab, and plan on staying a while

I also love the fact that Skyrim seems to cater to the Bioshock fan. I send a bot in to take aggro, lay a trap, then hit em with electo bolt 3 in my left, then incinerate 3 in my right, meanwhile reaping the benefits of my "walking inferno" necklace.

I have the 360 version and probably have about 10 hours into it. I surprisingly have not experienced any noticeable bugs to this point.

The game itself is amazingly well made and I would recommend it to everyone. Graphics are leaps and bound above Oblivion and the overall polish is great.

I have not played much of the story but the side quests are actually pretty fun and you can find yourself wasting hours of your day just exploring the areas.

@Japester - I took my follower on a quest to clear out a vampire and his thrall, who've been hassling a certain town... My Follower, Benor and I cleared out the mini-dungeon, but I came down with Sanguinare Vampiris, the pre-cursor to Vampirism.. I ran for a temple to cure disease.. but I didn't see Benor genuflect at the mini-altar.. I'm worried he may be changing in the next 2 days...

This game's so good, I feel I should be looking for a new follower...

    @muskellounger

Dayum! I'm sorry to hear that. I would have given up long ago if Skyrim played that poorly on my PS3. Between your constantly breaking Dualshocks and your game-breaking bugs, you have some uniquely bad Playstation juju. Perhaps an exorcist can heal your machine?

Ug. I just cleared out a huge nest of vampires while I was walking across the world. I need to check and see if we contracted it.

Without giving anything away, I just had another great scenario that totally sucked me into the world. I saw a figure way off in the distance. I stealthily followed for a while, then took her out with my bow. Suddenly witches come streaming out of the woods. We kill the main group then go back to stalking the stragglers. Unfortunately, the head honcho has a massive long-range fireball spell and easily picks us off before we can navigate the totally exposed bridge to her position. We retreat and mull it over...just as a blizzard whips up. Taking a chance, we quickly close on her and get the drop on her!

The whole thing felt so organic. Everything progressed naturally rather than being laid out like a puzzle. Very cool!

Curious to know if anyone with the PS3 version has the same issues as I do. Wondering if it's my machine, the original 60GB.

    @muskellounger

I have a 120GB slim, and I haven't had anything as bad as what you're experiencing. It wouldn't be the first time the older hardware had a few more issues with a PS3 game. I also browsed the PS3 forum over on Gamespot, and some people were reporting massive framerate drops when their save files got over 7MB. How big are your saves? Mine are right around 4MB. Seems to be tied into how much of the map you've explored.

    @billiamb

LOL. I'm glad you commented on your follower not genuflecting at the altar. I just assumed that when I did it, my follower would, too. Did you know you can command them to use the altar? It's the same as telling them to open a door or attack a target. Worked like a charm!

OMG. I'm having major deja vu with a side of panic. The reason my Fallout 3 game save was corrupted and basically made me throw the game out my window...was blamed on having too big of a game save file. I was really digging FO3, put some major hours into it, and I only had one save file that got corrupted...had me really mad at gaming. Something like that may make you stop gaming.

I'm not sure, but I think I'm over 7MB. First thing I did was roam around for fast travel purposes. I swear, right out of the box, no save file yet, the game basically pauses when I shout or run. I was going to look into it, but thanks for the info.

I should add that I get plenty of pauses when opening the menus or doing things outside the actual game world. For example, pulling up the save menu. It can be instantaneous, but most often it sits grayed out for a second or several. I haven't seen a pause when doing something like shouting or running, but I haven't hit that big-save phase yet. Fingers crossed.

And I hope they can patch the garbage out and improve your experience, mukellounger!

They don't seem that bad just time consuming, I need to get really started with this game to see if I will go for 100%, its a bit intimidating with a lack of time to commit, but once I finish Dead Island this is going to be my top priority! I need a little advice for those who are playing stealthy and as a mage. Here's a roadmap from a site I like to check out for achievements - http://www.xbox360achievements.org/f...d.php?t=341623

I was going to be play dark elf primarily magic user, now considering starting as Khajit and playing more thief/assassin with some magic. Anyone playing one of those play styles and particularly enjoying it?

If I go more magic, I don't think I want to go destruction -- looking at Conjuration spells a bit, seem more interesting, one big question is if I've summoned some creatures and am hidden, can I send them to attack someone and still stay hidden? Anyone playing a conjuring/illusion stealth character and like it or have any tips?

Anyone become a vampire and how does that play out?

Soooo confused where which path I want to head down!

That video is very similar to my experience. My save file is 8 MB, it seems to be getting worse. I'm shelfing my $60, and waiting for a patch. Really frustrating. I'm going back to my MMO, made by a great company: Trion Worlds.

That's awful. Enough people are reporting it that I have a hard time believing Bethesda didn't run into the same problem during testing. Unless this is largely restricted to older PS3 models for some reason, and Bethesda only used slims.

I was able to put in a few more hours and my save is now up to 5MB. I'm noticing a slight hesitation at times, but nothing major yet. I'm not looking forward to hitting 7-8MB.

Yeah, if you look at one way, you'll still get 3-6x the length of many other single player campaigns before it becomes an issue. Depending on how you play, it might take 30-40 hours before it becomes a major issue.

The Skyrim forums suggest turning off auto-save and keeping your number of saves small. I'm not sure how that would help, since the game is only referencing the one active save, but its worth a shot.

Someone else mentioned that he's around 60 hours in, and corpses and items from the very beginning of his run are still exactly where he left them. I'm starting to notice this, too. In other RPGs, if you leave an item on the ground it disappears not long after you exit the area. Tracking all those persistent bodies and items is surely contributing to the issue.

FYI, the collectors edition of the strategy guide may be rare. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Overstock all started cancelling orders because they were shorted. And every brick and mortar bookseller in my area is sold out. Best Buy is one of the few places where I still see it in stock. Just a thought. I hated seeing guides for games like Valkyria Chronicles and Demon's Souls go through the roof.

EDIT: I asked the fellow with the Youtube video which model he had, and he said it was a fat. Like muskellounger. That's not enough info to draw any conclusions, but it does hint that the older hardware is to blame. And it might explain why Bethesda didn't catch it. As soon as my save hits the danger zone, I'll be sure to post my experience here.

. Impacts often strike the emotions leading to reactions, that lead to consequences. Thus, if you train the mind to learn that reactions lead to consequences and consequences lead to responsibility you have a chance.

If you plan on taking the stance that life is a vacation, a whole lot of possibilities open up for you. Anxiety is worry. Sometimes we fret or worry over things we have no control more than often we worry over things we do have control. It takes you to take your control and live your life with responsibilities while stopping the avoidance to lead your life
