So the biggest surprise of all at the VGAs tonight was undoubtedly Todd Howard's reveal of the next Elder Scrolls game. Check out the first trailer here.

11/11/11. Less than a year. Get ready, because we're going back to Tamriel. So let's discuss it here.

"Congrats... to my pals at Bethesda for announcing." -Ken Levine via Twitter

More like Morrowind, less like Oblivion. Please.

No world levelling beside you kthx. The only thing i didnt like about oblivion was the inability to go away from a challenge, grind a bit for skills, and then come back with a better chance. The game was frustrating from one end to the other.

    Rye's AWESOME list:

    1) Max von Sydow (Greatest. Swedish. Actor. EVAR!)

    2) Brand new game engine! (i.e. no more ancient Gamebryo)

    Rye's wish List:

    1) Better leveling mechanic

    2) MUCH better combat please!

    3) NPC's with better facial animations (i.e. less uncanny valley)

I had to call my mom and have her listen to it to tell me who it was. I couldn't think of it but yeah, Vigo from Ghostbusters is gonna be in it! That's rad.

I have my money on the game using the Id Engine 5.

I know this is gonna set some people off, but I hate Morrowind's gameplay. I just can't do it. I love the story though. Probably the best of the series so far.

I'm looking forward to playing in Skyrim. The Nords are my go-to race (and not just because I've got Norse heritage). Oh, and dragons. Holy crap, I never thought they'd return.

I think I read somewhere that Todd Howard was quoted as saying their next game (at the time un-announced) would not be using id5, but rather an entirely new engine...

And, I agree, the lore of the Elder Scrolls series is really compelling, but the game play is just... Not so awesome.

If the combat has to suffer for the amazing freedom and beauty of Tamriel, I'm totally okay with that. I'd gladly sacrifice "cutting-edge supra grafix" and "EXTREEM COMBATS" for the open world to explore.

I should resurrect my old Elder Scrolls forum, what with all the news lately...

If you want to have fun in Black Marsh, I suggest you read The Infernal City. It's primarily set in Black Marsh (or rather, over it), with a couple of adventures through other lands. Good book for Elder Scrolls fans. I'm patiently awaiting the second one. I hope they tie into the next game, considering it's a direct sequel to Oblivion like Skyrim will be.

Don't get me wrong, I'll put up with a lot for a good story, but I have managed to play Oblivion quite a bit of the way through while INTENTIONALLY avoiding combat. It is just so unintuitive. I want the process of killing people to be fun, and not the most frustrating aspect of the entire game (imho). Sadly, I'll never make it too far into the main questline without killing enemies.

I'm pretty darn excited, but I feel the same as you's. They better have an answer for all the criticism about the leveling system and the combat mechanics. See, there are things I like about Oblivion, like enchanting for instance. I thought it was better as part of the plot, not done by yourself. Morrowind had seperate types of melee attacks which I liked, but both games suffer from nightmarish combat mechanics.

I typically play a melee style character, but ended up playing a mage in both games because of my dislike for the combat. Both games really drew me into their worlds, and started doing damage to my social life...if this game is really good...I'm doomed lol.

What did you think of the teaser? All I can say is dragons...hells yeah.

I think I'm the only one on Earth that actually liked the battle mechanics. I liked the first-person swordplay. It was simple and it made it feel like it was you in the world. I can't imagine it any other way and I doubt I'd want it. How else would you propose it be?

    Sydow is a badass Swede.

The interesting thing about dragons in Elder Scrolls is that they were always left out of the games, even though they're absolutely a fantasy staple. So now after all these years they finally show up. This, I think, gives Skyrim a big gravitas. Oblivion had the bonus of ending the emperor's life too. He'd been in t he games since the beginning, so it was kind of a big deal. Sadly, I didn't appreciate it much at the time because I'd only ever known Oblivion.

The big thing is what sunjammer said. There should be areas where the enemies are high levels, like later in the plot. If you stumble upon this area early in game, you should be able to go grind some ranks, and now compete. In Oblivion if you didn't rank only 3 catagories +5/+5/+5, and spread them around, the enemies would be stronger than you. You could eventually beat them, damaging all your equip, and whacking at them for 15 minutes.

Give me a fast "light" attack, slower "heavy" attack, . a running attack swing, parry moves, and a small hitboxed backstab special. They need to be different for one and two handed as far as damage output, animations, and stamina drain. I want lots of melee options, making it a strategic choice as to which attack to use. Less button mashing, more skill.

The big thing I would like is target lock. I don't like when the enemy dissapears behind you. If there was target lock, your toon would always face your target. So this way you won't lose sight, and your toon would spin to always face them. It would make using the bow nicer too.

Louder clanging and more sparks wouldn't hurt either. I want spears too. Magic ones and throwing ones. Maybe mounted combat possibilities...all right, I'm reaching.

Ah, so rather just updated combat than totally remade. Okay, I agree. I think it's almost assured that we'll get an update to it on account of the new engine.

I also agree that the leveling congruently sucked. Give me an awesome weapon that I find but can't use at the time so I save it for when I can. Or enemies that I have no hope of beating. That'd be awesome.

All right, the combat sounds sweet. Like on the fly hot keyed choice of 4 weapons. But...no class selection? What about race?

“The game eventually logs a huge storehouse of knowledge about how you’ve played, and subsequently tailors content to your capabilities and experiences. Entering a city, a young woman might approach you and beg you to save her daughter from kidnappers. The game will look at the nearby dungeons you’ve explored, automatically set the mission in a place you’ve never visited, and designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses.”

Sounds tough. It's the same thing where if you level like a dumbass, it will be brutally hard.

Apparently this brings a better leveling system, more on the lines of that used in Fallout (which is TREMENDOUS news if you ask me.) Sounds like Bethesda heard the complaints from the players (combat and leveling) and have fixed them.

That's right motherf***er, the first gameplay trailer for Skyrim is out, and holy s**t is it amazing. Harry Partridge levels of excitement are totally natural. I mean, this trailer is great. And who else but me is going to go frame-by-frame and cut this b***h open? Let's kick it.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...prettyland.png

Wow. The new engine looks awesome. I mean, we'd seen the great graphics before in the Game Informer screens, but in action it looks jaw dropping. And this is just some landscape. We get a lot more all throughout this trailer.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/spriting.jpg

Looks like here is that sprinting mechanic in action. The Duvahkiin has to make good time.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...stheground.png

This image gives us a look at the effects of spells on the landscape around you. It also shows the Dragonborn being really intense. I'd like a wallpaper of that.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...k888/thuum.png

    Thuum time baby!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...uminaction.png

UH, take that shout punka** dragon!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ssivescale.png

The scale of this game is really huge. Compare those buildings to those people. That's big, and apparently most cities in Skyrim are like that. Those buildings are the size of the Imperial City's! Awesome.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ritsahorse.png

HORSES CONFIRMED, HORSE ARMOR PACK DLC ON THE WAY, OMFG SO HAPPY!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...nkitsaship.png

Some people are claiming that this is a ship. While we all know that the Nords are a great seafaring race, I'm pretty sure that thing in the hazy sea is just a reflection of the buildings on the above cliff in the water. I really hope there are ships though. Holy s**t, I want to be a captain.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...k888/GIANT.png

Giants are going to be fun to fight. These dudes are big. Their footfalls shake the ground. I wonder if they'll fight like Super Mutant Behemoths from Fallout.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...88/HUNTING.png

Hunting is one of the best parts of Oblivion. It feels like you're actually in the world, just living. Great for immersion. Stuff like that is what makes The Elder Scrolls my favorite RPG.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...agonbattle.png

Oh yeah, dragon-battle baby. I love how it reacts and recoils to every blow. The blood effects look great. So intense.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...bioblivion.png

Here's some of that BioShock influence in Skyrim. It's probably a pretty good idea to bring a fire spell along with your sword to take on a frost troll. Smart little Duvahkiin!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z.../assassinz.png

Playing an assassin is bound to be fun. Striking from the shadows, murdering your pray in the darkness. HOW FUN!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ktotheface.png

Ooh, right to the face. The fights are brutal in the north indeed.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...tingisgood.png

The lighting looks pretty good. I dig it.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...Efirespell.png

Damn, look at that AoE! It's like a mininuke blast. Awesome.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...dkewlarmor.png

Spirits? That guy better be bringing some silver of enchanted weapons with him. Cool armor though.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...owsarecool.png

    Arrows vs wild dog!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/finished.png

Ouch, that's a painful end. Finishers are just as violent as all the other combat in Skyrim. A sword through the chest, that's intense.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...8/nirnroot.png

And hey there, look at that, Nirnroot! Confirmed baby.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...derirfraid.png

EECK, giant spider! i r fraidz.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...quickening.png

Woah, it's a Dragonborn Quickening! Sick!

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ttadragons.png

Over there on the left looks like the stairway to the Throat of the World. And on the right, another dragons. There's a lot of them in Skyrim it seems. A LOT.

    http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...ndtheworld.png

Boom, the date that is etched in all of our minds. And that's it for the trailer. Big stuff. Very epic. Cannot wait. See you next news article!

Dude. Epic. Time is standing still here. I'm just hanging, waiting, growing impatient, for Infinite and Skyrim.

I wonder what loot their is on a dragon corpse?

    Moar than one dragon?! Yes!

I wasn't too excited about this game at first (happy, because I knew further Fallout games would use this), but man that gameplay trailer was fantastic.

I can't wait for all the combat gameplay against dragons!

This game and Infinite are my most anticipated games. Between Morrowind and Oblivion, I must have spent almost 300 hours playing. Possibly more, and I don't regret it at all. The new engine elicits a huge sigh of relief from me. 11-11-11 will not come soon enough.

Just saw Todd Howard play a some Skyrim at E3 on spike, game looks so good. Also the latest issue of the PS3 magazine cover story was on Skyrim, def worth picking up and checking out. With L.A Noire not quite meeting expectations, I'm thinking Skyrim may be the best game to come out.

I have already informed my loved ones that they need not worry about not hearing from me for the first three or four days after the game is released. I'm actually thinking of "building" a gaming pc just for this title. I've only ever played Bethesda games on the Xbox and 360, but I know they give better tools and support to the PC versions. And I want in on that.

Yeah, I just found out they have infinity dragons. And they are going to incorporate more of the weirdness that made Morrowind so damn fantastic. It just keeps getting better and better.

5x as many voice actors as Oblivion? That is awesome. 100+ dungeons and towns that are made to be more unique are also more than welcome news. I'm really not hearing anything about this game that doesn't make me salivate openly.

I've been saving my paid time off for the same reason! The beauty of Elder Scrolls is losing yourself in the world of Tamriel. I'm going to need at least a couple days to get the full effect!

Nothing like an RPG to consume the time between months of waiting for Bioshock Infinite to be released. And this RPG....looks tasty.
