    Batman: Arkham City

Is there anyone besides me that is excited for this game. Judging from what there was in the first game, the second one will be awesome.

    What are your thoughts?

Yeah I thought the first game was really well done, I just hope for better boss battles from the second one. Some of the villain encounters from the first one like killer croc could have been better, otherwise it was a great game. Didn't really care for the challenge rooms too much though.

I wish it didn't have to have "Arkham" in the title. Makes it seem too much of a number 2 game, which I suppose it is, but I want a whole game series based on Batman, not revolving around Amadeus Arkham's hotel for madmen. Shoulda just been called "Gotham City". But regardless, I am pumped for it.

LoL what you just said, reminds of me of all those who were mad that Bioshock Infinite had the word Bioshock in it cause it didn't deal with Rapture and Big Daddies/Little Sisters.

Well, I always considered the "Bio" in BioShock to be reference to the bioenhancements in the gameplay. I probably wouldn't have minded a different "Shock" name to further my desire for a whole Shock series, but I'm not broken up over it. Neither am I for Arkham 2, but I still have a little wish for it's title to be different.

The reviews for the game came out Friday and if you haven't seen it, their off the charts - http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-...an-arkham-city . Saw the Arkham City panel at NYCC, great panel followed at the end with the game director playing the game live. I can confirm how awesome it looked. Rage and Gears of War 3 may have to be put on hold for this game

On a bit of a oh wow moment, they gave away an awesome Batman customized console (check what it looks like here) - http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...-surfaces.aspx by placing a piece paper under the chairs people were sitting. The paper was under a seat the row behind us, where the group I was with almost sat. It also was in an empty seat and claimed by someone sitting right next to it. Ah so close!

Has anyone played as Catwoman yet? I was going to wait until I finish Batman.

I think I'm waiting until the end as well.. although I thought I could play through the game with my 'Sinestro Corps' skin, but.. apparently that DLC is only usable on a second play thru? That's rather presumptuous of them, isn't it?

Haven't played it yet but I heard it would make more sense to play as catwoman as it becomes available as it makes sense in the story at the time.

I've played it. It's the best comic book based game since Arkham Asylum, and that was already the best comic book based game ever. Arkam City itself is as immersive in free roam as it appears, and those side missions add more to the story, which I could see possibilities for story DLC in this game. Without spoiling, you get most of your gadgets from the last game early on, but you also get a few more that not only are effective in areas, but enemies as well. Gliding mechanics expanded a bit more, and the area is wide enough to practice a lot of the new features. Riddler challenges are a lot more difficult than they were before, since its not only climbing around, but playing mini-puzzles that require your gadgets and quick timing. Enemy AI for thugs improved a bit, but its no different than before, and your stealth abilities are also improved for avoiding them, including using smoke bombs. Asylum was like revisiting the animated series, but City was like living in both the animated series and the comics.

Catwoman is available for download, either with the code in the game or online. Her fighting is okay, but there's a lot more range in her abilities, including crawling around walls and ceilings, which come in handy in stealth and for Riddler clues. Also, it alternates the story's intro, which itself expands the game's story and events, which is why you can't access it between a saved game that didn't have it before.

I'm only about halfway through the game and so far it's mostly incredible!

    A couple of thoughts:

--The bosses are way more interesting in this one, including one whose creative approach to game design rivals what Hideo Kojima loves to do with his Metal Gear bosses (in terms of bending the game's mechanics in interesting ways).

--The story is way better than the first. The stakes are much higher, but what's really amazing is how they manage to have all these characters, references, and layers but have everything still be really tight and cohesive. The game is about as far from a mess as possible!

--The city is a little too busy for my tastes. It's not as good at filtering information as the Assassin's Creed games, imo. If you're not in detective vision the game is just too detailed and things just don't stand out enough. It all kind of goes together in a big dark and neon blur. Detective vision really helps though. Also, it can get annoying just HOW much chatter goes on at any given time. I love flavor dialogue and all, but at times it's just too distracting.

--Has anyone else noticed how Batman really loves to repeat his hints in this one? I noticed it right at the start of the game when I just wanted to explore a little and he couldn't stop babbling about how I should be heading to the Belltower. I KNOW BATMAN I'M GETTING THERE!

Please note that my little nitpicks with the game are just that. It's a really ambitious and creative game that pulls off some truly amazing things so far and overall it's even better than the first.

About Catwoman: She's really, really fun to play as, but so far (and again, I'm only 42% done with the story according to the stats) she doesn't affect the plot much. At this point, I'd say those of you who want to play as her after the fact won't be hurt by your decision.

My only complaint is that since "Arkham" is in both the title of the original and the sequel, I made a buffoon of myself on a gaming podcast when I kept saying Arkham City was Arkham Asylum, and Arkham Asylum was Arkham City!

A really stupid complaint, though. I should've been more on the ball.

I had to drop extra for the Skyrim collector's edition, so Arkham City is going to have to wait for Christmas for this guy. Andrew Reiner gave it a 10, so if he gives the green light on something, I'm all for it!

So I just finished the game the day before yesterday. Rocksteady had some serious balls with this game and THAT ENDING. Definitely one of my top 3 videogame endings of all time!

Working through it right now. Was planning on waiting, but Target had a computer glitch Sunday morning that made games B1G1. Walked out with Arkham City and Dark Souls for $60.

I've only just begun, but I'm already having flashbacks to my old NES days in the 80's playing games like Mega Man. I was trying to open a Riddler trophy that involved a lot of gliding and hitting successive switches. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, but I kept missing it slightly. Just like the old days, I refused to give up, but my commentary consisted of, "F&%K, F&%K, F&%K, F&%K, F&%K, F&%K, F&%KING, F&%K, F&%K, F&%K." LOL. I'm not a big fan of cursing, but a challenging game that frustrates me without ruining the experience always brings out the best in me. Ha!

The ending was definitely something memorablle, and I'm glad that it still allows to continue playing the game, along with switching Batman and Catwoman for Riddler Trophies.

Also, without spoiling anything, I really love the designs of the areas below the city. It just makes me think it was inspired by BioShock when I go there.

LOL I've been going through that same situation with the more complex Riddler Trophies. Drives me nuts when it comes to using the remote Batarang on the same puzzle 30 times because it needs to first go to an electric area several feet from my direction, only when its about to finally reach the switch, a corner knocks the Batarang out.

@japester - the air is often blue in my house when I'm playing a new game that's just kicking my ass! Occasionally, a round of swearing is punctuated by the sound of my controller hitting the wall.

  20. #20

I recently read (ok I admit I saw it in the zero punctuation review) that some of the riddler trophies and such were unobtainable at the end of the game..Can anyone verify this? It's the type of game I like to complete fully, but won't even bother if there are charts I need to refer to, to ensure I get everything at the right time..

Fun Fact: The voice of Booker DeWitt is also the voice of Two Face aka Troy Baker. In fact, here's an interview:

I had fun with that very fact at NYCC. I'm a fan of voice actors in general, and I have a lot of respect for both Kevin Conroy and Andrea Romano. I hit up a few very big panels about both Batman and Arkham City, partially to see Kevin and Andrea (plus Bruce Timm!), but also to mention to anyone who would listen that the voice of Two-Face would be doing a free autograph session on Saturday. LOL.

Troy is quite the chameleon. I have a hard time picking anything Booker-ish out of his Two-Face portrayal.

  23. #23

I would not have guessed that he was the voice of Booker.. he just doesn't look Booker-ish... which means he is a helluva voice actor..

  24. #24

Thanks for posting up that interview jayakers! Troy is fast becoming one of my top favorite voice actors and I had no idea that he voiced Two-Face!

LOL. Forget the Riddler trophies--the AR training caused me to cuss up a storm! Cheese and Crackers!!! I guess I was doing the last set out of order, because the first one I tried was the one at the Joker's place where you have to pull up the second you launch to maintain altitude for the first ring, then divebomb, then swoop through a long, narrow tunnel. Oh, man. I lost count how many times I whiffed it.

When I completed that task, and again when I finished the very last AR mission, I treated the AR voice to the kind of language normally reserved for the finest popular rap songs.

I really need to work on my combat. I keep wading into groups of enemies and getting my butt handed to me. Must. THINK. Like. Batman!

I have a feeling there are miss-able trophies, which stinks. Check the B Man forums or youtube, look for the trophy chart for the area.

At 70% completed. Currently on second play-through, much harder. Finished 11 out of 12 side missions (AR is not).

Batman Arkham City is a great game in my view with lot of contents for players to explore and complete. Nit-picking here: 400+ trophies and puzzles is just redundant. By 300 + i'm about to call it quit. A bit tricky as far as obtaining those trophies, an example would be instead of spraying explosives on boards, so you must glide and crash through them to get to the trophies. Another would be lining up the periods just so it underneath the question marks.

again, a great game i would recommend playing. Maybe GotY for 2011. However, my choice for GotY would be Deus Ex Human Revolution.

I had way too much fun playing this game. Being able to do the iconic grapple hooking between buildings was soooo much fun! There's enough side missions to want you keep going back. I've only done the first play through but I was not disappointed with the ending. It'd be really hard to make a 3rd game though unless it was Gotham itself but then you'd have to worry about civilians. Would it be even more about stealth?

Anyway, I can't wait to find some time to replay this game and get some time in playing as Nightwing and Robin in the challenge maps.

i haven't gotten very far in the game, but for those of you that have played the game... is it just me, or do the harley quinn, hit-x-to-call-her dolls remind anyone else of gather's gardens? maybe it's Harley's voice and the voice effect applied to her voice? kinda sounds like a Gather's Garden... i just spent 20 minutes hitting X to hear all the dialogue. fun times!

I thought that, too. May be some inspiration for them was there when making them.

Also, if you like that, then you should try to go further past the Subways. You'll like what you'll find down there .

So has anyone here done all the medals for the Challenge maps, just got all the ones for Batman in the ranked mode, now going to start on the campaign maps. Feels like it will take forever, especially if going to do the DLC challenge maps for the other characters. Did all the Riddler trophies and my first play through so just need to do New game plus and rest of the challenge maps to get all the achievements. Really good game, think I like it better than Arkham Asylum.

Honestly, for me, the Catwoman parts of the game were the sweetest parts of the game. I really love her character and her moves. Shame that some people don't like it.

I didn't know what to think of playing as her initially, but then I was surprised it turned out to be this good. So in which direction do you guys see the sequel headed? I personally would like them to expand on the free-roam aspect, Batman: Arkham World?

Arkham World? Nah. They'll probably expand to Gotham City and that's it.

    But for the fourth game...

So finished up with Arkham City completely!

Thought the gameplay and boss battles were much better than Arkham Asylum. The Riddler Trophies were actually fun to get during my first gameplay.

During New Game plus - was fun going through just the missions not worrying about riddler trophies, also played through Big Head mode which I'll get too. I was hoping some of the boss battles or perhaps the riddler hostage rooms would change during New game plus and they don't so its a bit disappointing in that aspect. It is a little bit harder you don't see the counter icon over an enemy when they attack but the only boss who I felt benefited from it was Mr. Freeze as you had to do practically every takedown in the book to defeat him. Otherwise no real change except having all the gadgets in the beginning

Big Head Mode --- Is AWESOME, loved it its hysterical seeing Batman and his villains with the big head. You see it in all the in game cutscenes and only get taken out of it for the cinematic pieces. Only annoyance is having to put the code in every time you die.

Challenge maps -- loved doing the challenge maps and did all of them for Batman, Robin, Nightwing, and Catwoman. I did them in that order and if I had to rank them

Combat Challenges - 1 - Nightwing, 1A - Catwoman, 3 - Batman, and 4 - Robin . Nightwing and Catwoman totally kick ass, only problem with Catwoman can't jump and ride a Titan to use against enemies. A little hesitant to put Batman down to 3 since it was the first character I used and had to go through the challenges with.

Predator Challenge - 1 - Nightwing, 2 - Batman, 3 - Robin, and 4 - Catwoman . Nightwing is the best once again! Catwoman has by far the easiest predator challenges but in terms of comparing what she can do compared to the other 3 would easily be the weakest.

After doing the AC challenges went back to Arkham Asylum to do those which I remember not liking, the combat in this game in much smoother and better than in AA. After getting a bit used to AA was able to rip through those game's challenges. Now just need to talk to Calendar man during the holidays to get the final achievement in AC.

As far as where they go to next ,not sure hopefully, they take their time and get it right. Wouldn't mind seeing some DLC with Identity Thief or Azrael for this game.
