Thread: BioShock: The game that makes you think

  1. #1

Apart from BioShock, can we get some people posting games which made them really question society apart from BioShock?

Bioshock nails it right on. There's not many games I could think of, but alot of books and movies. The only game I could think of is half-life 2, oh and Ghostbusters(Just kidding)

Half-Life 2 i definitely agree with. Have you played Portals? I know it doesn't really throw up moral questions, but it at least keeps your brain challenged

I think games probably made me question society before BioShock...but none of it really sank in until I actually played BioShock.

BioShock won my heart with so many different things.

This might seem preposterous initially, but the Fable games can make an intelligent person really think about themselves. If you examine someone's Fable character - and their reasons behind the decisions they make - it can all be quite telling. Molyneux refers to it as "games as instruments of social and personal change" or something to that effect. Generally, games with moral choices can tell a lot about an individual, but in times of morality and gaming I think Fable is top of the pile. Morality is the crux of those games, after all.

Splinter Cell: Conviction made me wonder how much is the government lying to us and how much have they saved us, preventing the deaths of millions killing a few.

Pretty much every title in the Metal Gear series, but mostly Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Inception too, but that's more about questioning REALITY than just society.

Half Life . The mission .

Games haven't really made me question society but a few movies and books did. I think I have been questioning society from birth.

Bits of Fallout made me question humanity as a whole, not just society. Mainly the original 2 and just the general backdrop of the story, when you look into it a nuclear holocaust was an incredibly likely event back in the 50's.

Or 1962 what with the October Crisis and all.

True. Nuclear holocausts have had numerous brushes with reality through that time period. Nice one humanity. If it wasn't for 73's agreement between Russia and USA i wouldn't bet on much that we'd still all be here.

Also, as afar as games that make you think morally go, New Vegas is a good one, playing as a strictly good character is pretty much impossible.

In some aspects it was about philosophy but mostly it just made you think technically:

    Myst

    and

    Riven.

    Ah the 90s.

Personally I think Fallout is a great example,

E.g The Enclave 'The Big Brother Goverment' (Look at what they did, it could make you question...What if.)

-Would the Government Really help during an Emergency

-Would they really be extreme and take all those steps to keep a small few alive

    and the list goes on.

Deus Ex really made me think about the possible results of technology; the final choice between three unsatisfactory endings kind of drove home the idea that without technology we'd be reduced to stone age villages, but that with it, we might be doing ourselves more harm than good.

I'm sceptical of all that - technology so far seems to have far more benefits than downsides - but thinking about those endings always makes me uneasy.

Fallout made me think more about how society would react to such a disaster, and how things could evolve out of a holocaust like in the fallout world.

Bioshock is different in that it focuses more on 'normal' (without nuclear holocausts) politics and society.

I would have to say the first one that comes to mind is Bioshock! It's realistic concepts makes me think, this could or already happened. When I play any COD games, it makes me think about the society then and what our real advantage was by doing all the war[s].

The Metal Gear Solid franchise will make you think 'til you're head 'splodes!

Reading History will help you understand the 'real advantage'. The simple truth is that there will always be people who will want to steal what you have and wont care what they have to do to get it all. You can either surrender and be plowed under, or fight for what is yours.
