Thread: Old games of Old Days (Thief)

  1. #1

So I know this is going way back in the past, and maybe there aren't enough of the original staff around still to comment, but do the guys at Irrational Games have an opinion on the new of a new Thief game? I know there's not much, but just hearing something from your guys either way would please this diehard fan.

And of course if anyone else has anything to add about the Thief series in general, would you kindly speak your mind?

I just really hope Eidos doesn't screw-up Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3.

Oh, and there better be a return of the rope arrow in Thief 4.

I liked the gloves for wall-climing in Thief 3, but I want my rope arrows too, dammit!

They talked a good bit about Thief in the Podcast: Irrational Behavior: Episode 2, Part 3, and a wee bit about Thief 4, too.

Irrational didn't make Thief, so unless they are currently in touch with Yoichi Wada or someone way up the chain of command, no one at Irrational will know anything about that.

Us Thief fans have been trying to get word on what the owners of the franchise licenses plan to do with the source code and other materials. And as for the next game, we only have what the official website states, and that is, Eidos-Montréal plans on making games for multiple platforms, but which ones they will choose for Thief 4, we don't know yet.

If the source were found but the copyright belonged to two parties, what would have to happen in order to get it released...

    1. Whole?

    2. With one copyright owner's materials removed?

Could third-party money be raised to pay for the hours spent clean-up and inspection of the release version, or are we all wishing futilely upon a star? Could it be put up for sale to at least recoup the employee(s) for the clean-up of the source for release?

The entire production of early Thief games was like watching a young rock band drink themselves to death while making one great album.

I love the games, but the production and history of the games was pure chaos. Even the people involved take different angles on describing who was responsible for the good or the bad that came out of the first game especially.

Other than some mild ties to Irrational through Looking Glass and Ion Storm and so on--I'm not sure this is actually an Irrational question. Hell, Warren Specter was the lead on the game and claims that he barely had anything to do with it before getting laid off. Thank goodness he was, because we wound up with Deus Ex.

Of course--we still have System Shock 1 and 2 here--which really only has lingering ties to a few of the Looking Glass guys as well, so maybe you'll be lucky enough to get an answer.

My guess is that won't happen mostly because Irrational didn't see fit to put a Thief sub-forum in, which means they probably don't consider it their project.

We here at Irrational Games are excited to see what they do with both titles.

I was able to meet some of the Eidos Montreal staff at GDC 2010 and I am extremely excited about Deus Ex: Human Revolution from what I saw during the presentation, which makes me very excited what they could be doing for Thief 4. They have some really smart guys and girls up there. Tons of respect for them.
