    Weapons Capture from RPS

What's everyones thoughts on the alien weapon capture?

Reading through the RPS interview I hit a few things that really stood out.

Jake "When they die their weapons self-destruct but if you capture those aliens, then the weapons don’t self-destruct"

I thought this was an extremely clever way of getting around people getting advanced weapons too quick. It is simple and makes sense, they wouldn't want us to reverse engineer their advanced weapons so make them self destruct.

I can really see it making some heart in mouth game play. Does that muton have enough damage done, for my last soldier to stick a stun rod up his ass and drop him... Ahhh crap, no he doesn't... I really, really don’t want to hit that end turn button

It reminds me of MIB but I like it.

Like he said, you still need to buy/research arc throwers - then pull off the stun without dieing, then have the alien containment ready, then prepare for the lengthy research times on the weapons, also needing enough alien parts or something.... etc

And to me it sounded like you wouldn't be able to continually manufacture them, so only 1 of your guys would initially have the weapon for use.

Love it. Tech capture was way to easy in the original.

Now it seems like a real tactical feat to grab those high-tier rifles.

I'm loving the new weapon mechanic. But I do hope that the 'regular' weapons like the assault rifle, shotgun and what not receive some love too. There is mentioning of improved pistols, so I know that there is some improvement possible. But if it takes considerable time and effort to get the alien toys, it would be nice if we could keep upgrading the human arsenal as well. To a certain level ofcourse, otherwise there would be no need to get the alien equipment in the first place.

Agreed. Though the whole "weapons self-destruct" mechanism sounds forced and contrived to me. But hell, if it adds a gameplay element that makes "Earth tech" last a little longer I'm all for it. If it was up to me then Plasma and Laser and futuristic sci-fi weapons would be few and far between, things only used once in a while, not always rechargeable and not completely understood. Then again, the old game had tons of it, so whatever.

and I'm pretty sure you'll have your way. how it sounds to me, research (tech trees) heavily depends on the buildings or base setup you have. so i think with an early foundry and Officers quarters, you can boost your soldiers alot, innitally. you'd need enough resources from your friendly nations though too (e.g. africa: little money/alot resources), for production i guess. also, i think it will be quite a challenge, and will require alot of research (containment centre) and skill (HP?), before you can walk up and zap an alien. so my guess is, that you can either focus on terran weapons for a long time, or at some point restructure your base and develop future tech. all comes down to your current strategic situation, i think...

Yes, I think that came from a gameplay design point of view rather than anything else. But the concept if not that far-fetched.
I bet lots of soldiers have orders to destroy vital equipment rather than have it captured, though I would not venture a guess if self-destruct functions are built into things today.

That would be the way to go. By making the weapons that much harder to get, the human weapons need to be upgraded and last longer. I really like the sounds of using the human weapons longer in the game. Then having only a couple of alien weapons makes them that much more important to your team. In the originals it was capture one and then send the whole team back out with them. It also sounds like they have the resources restricted too. Might have the weapon captured and the research done but no resources, no guns Adds a new layer to the game that the originals didn't have

This sounds like an interesting concept to me and I wonder if you can manufacture alien weapons? Actually having to manufacture alien weapons using precious resources like elerium is going to be a tough choice. In XCOM I basically never had to do this because you would be crapping heavy plasma rifles left/right/center after a while. Having to either capture them in risky circumstances or use rare alien resources to manufacture them... oh dear. That's not an easy choice.

To be honest.. I'd hate to see simply "cloned" alien weapons... I really would love to see new earth techs BASED ON the alien tech...

I'd also have on my wish lists different types of weapons with different dmg type and resistances of aliens...

You know... I would really love to see a rail gun sniper rifle piercing through thick skins, while the laser just causes mild burns... but there would be enemies, where it would always be a good idea to carry that laser pistol as your sidearm... (cause AP munition even in advanced form, sucks)

I would like to see this as well, hybrid weapons vs just using carbon copy. Also curious what the weapon upgrade research does as opposed to alien research . just a modifier or new types of weapons.
