Thread: Voice dialects?

  1. #1

    Voice dialects?

It occured to me that so far all soldier voices we've heard have been american, now whilst I don't have anything against the dulcet tones of our cousins across the pond I'm certainly hoping for more varied dialects. I'm going to find it difficult to suspend belief when a multi national force sound like the cast of jersey shore!.

Has there been any word from the developers on this?

I agree totally. I'm hoping for at least a few different accents. If i had my way, there would be at least one accent per nationality...with several dozen nationalities.

I was about to agree, but then in not that sure about it. When I checked the two base NPCs (Mission control and research) they had what sounded to me like American accents.

However, this is Firaxis... they have this type of experience from earlier games like Civ, right? (I haven't played the later ones).

Totally agree here. If they are all going to have the same accents we NEED a toggle off button. I hate playing games with multi national units for them all to have the same accent. It's like 'cool a game has my national flag on it... Oh it has all the same accents... why did they bother with the flags then?!' I hope it's just the beta testing that they havent bothered with the voices.

I could deal with the base NPC's being american (although the scientist had a definate eastern european twang to her now I think about it) just not all the soldiers. As for the Civ games I'm pretty sure they use that weird sim speak, at least they did for rev and it's been too long for me to remember the previous games, but I'm still hopeful they will make the effort.

Totally agree, it would be absolutely ideal to have at least one dialectic/accent from each country/nation. It'd be even better to have a few from each country being that most countries have a distinct regional variance. If any of you guys and girls have played Brink before, that game seemed to do a nice job of mixing in the different cultures and voices of such. Don't you just love games featuring international groups coming together?; it gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

LOL, I don't care so much about the warm and fuzzy feelings but it is cool to play a game that includes other nationalities. Its a very rare thing to play a soldier with an Aussie flag on his shoulder, so when it happens I want it to be right

One of the last men of war games was probably the most recent to have ANZACs in it. It was a very welcome shock to click down the list of units and find squads of ANZACs to go smashing the place up with. The only down side was that was about all I used from then on But it really adds to the feel of a game when you have units with your own flag on them, instant connection and with out trying I favor them.

    - English
    - Scots
    - Irish
    - Aussie
    - German Influence

    - Nordic Influence
    - Arabic Influence
    - Hindi Influence
    - Japanese or Chinese (something to cover the Far east) Influence
    - Something that would cover Africa

I still think it would be awesome and internationally delightful to have them speaking those languages instead of just accents. It may not make sense for people to speaking different languages over a shared radio comm, but it would make choosing your soldier's nationality a million times more fun. Yes 1,000,000 times more fun.

Nah... they need to communicate with each other... While Chinese is used by most people on Earth, English covers more countries and is an "official" business/military language in multinational organizations. The accents should be heard though... I would not expect a soldier to speak with a fluent AM-E or English with no accent influence of his own.

Actually they don't need to communicate with each other since you control their every movement and their feedback will not really affect your decision making process. However, it would affect the uniqueness of each of your soldiers.

Lol very funny thread - now you know voice confirmations can be turned off - you are wanting lots of different variants to the voices while weeks earlier you was demanding you could turn them off.
    lol lol lol lol

    I guess...

But for me if English in the game would sound at least this much diverse as in this video, I'm ok with it...

Not all of us were demanding it, but if you make them, at least make them properly

Agreed, there may have been a vocal few who brought this to light and many others who agreed it should be a toggle option, whether they would or not.

Personally I like it when they give us the option to increase/decrease different sounds in the game sometimes I don't want to get rid of something altogether, but decrease it to almost silent.

I for one would not remove the Voice Confirmations. Especially if they are funny like those from the Original Warcraft. I was one of those who would click on peons till I heard every possible response and loved when a new troop type appeared.

"Stop poking me" - Simple but classic.

Yeah it was pretty much Katscan who complained till the cows came home about the voice confirmations. I never minded them that much. I really liked the way that Civ had different languages for the different civilizations and think this would be a great chance to implement similar language dynamics depending on the soldier's nationality.

PS: Agree with Warcraft voices. My favorite was the demo goblin dudes. "we've got explosives...kaboooom"

Well we know that there are at least ten voice options for female members. (Look at the customization screen screenshot, I think it was at ten)

So there's a lot, and I'm positive some of them would be accented, because what's the point of ten entirely English accents?

I agree that this should definately include multiple accents if they are using different flags to identify nationality of the character.

However considering you can change the spec of a character, name, face etc.. I think they also said that you can change nationality.. (can someone confirm this?) Do you think the nationality you choose will automatically come with the correct accent? that might be the reason for them all to sound butch american...

Well the reverse could be true too. I.e. My Canadian unit had Troops with Russian, British, etc accents. So even Nationality does not necessarily denote dialect. So it would be nice if we could choose the accents during customization (not saying it doesn't already)

I agree that actual different languages would be nicer than accents.. then they could market the game as a way to learn new languages.. and they wouldn't have to worry about making different versions for different countries.

Classic! It's funny that the quotes are the thing that made everyone remember that game (me included).

If they had the original warcraft style quotes I would have them on and LOUD I probably wouldn't even care about the accents any more LOL. I brought up the idea of comical things happening in the ant farm that we could watch and laugh a while back. The replies were about 50/50, some loved the idea, others hated it and wanted the game to be 100% serious.

Yeah im hopping regional dialect too, i posted in another thread about Silent Storm being an amazing turn based game to play and that had regional dialect, it wasn't full blown conversations from what i can remember but short acknowledgments of your chosen actions.

It will never happen but i would love to have a North East (Geordie) accent in there, always gives me a chuckle hearing a Geordie accent on screen

If we're allowed to mod the voices, I'm so making a mod with Warcraft voices. After I play the heck out of the vanilla version ofcourse. But afterwards, ... just imagine, instead of "Roger that!" you'd get a "Zug zug" or a "My tummy feels funny". That would be beyond awesome! Thanks for the idea, guys!

Humor has its place, in my mind the Ant Farm is a great place for it. Heck every military unit has it's share of Jokers.

This image suggests that there might be quiet a few voices to choose from.. hopefully with dialect options. This image suggests at least 10 variations for the female character.

Looks good Wrench, I wonder what the voice actually is for. Is it for accent or is it just different voices. We will have to wait and see. I can't see any option for warcraft one voices... Com'on Fraxis!

@ Zero.G Silent Storm done the voices very well... that game was worth the play through.

Yea, watching the Gamespot 2 multiplayer match gameplay from yesterday reinforced the fact that they will be off in my playthrough. The stupid crap that came out of the soldiers mouths when they reloaded "Ready to kill" made me roll my eyes. Every... single... order... Its just too much. Thank goodness you can kill the voices

I like the voices. I would prefer more accents and kind of guys, like a joker guy, serious dude, psycho creepy etc. But well we can't have everything i guess.
