Going into an UFO ship no longer available?

I honestly think this option isn't available anymore. Gone are the days you would be able to go into a UFO and explore the ship. I just can't see this game doing that because of size of the map, the multi-level of a ship, from what we've seen before all the Aliens just drop down in pods of 3.

Surely Firaxis wouldn't remove the UFO's from the game? That would just make no sense at all. The new game does have Interceptors as far as I know, no point to having planes to shoot down UFO's if there aren't any, I supose.

you can shoot it down but it crashes into rubbles, like in real life when a plane crashes.

you can't really go into a plane after it crashes can you? I mean you can go into small section of it, if its available.

There is really nothing to say either yes or no to that. What we know are based on assumptions and loose comments.
    1. The cinematic into shows a intact crashed UFO.
    2. Jake has mentioned "alien environments" in an offhand comment.

I hope it's not just alien bases, that would really kill the game.

This is a legitimate concern that has me a little worried now. I really hope that one of the devs will confirm that you can actually enter UFOs during tactical missions.

Me too. The thought of going into the ufo's on the original was really scary as you kinda knew your first trooper in had a 50/50 chance of survival. Losing this aspect would cut some of the character out of the game

I am with you guys on this one. Not being able to go into crashed UFOs would be a game breaker. They were some of the best missions in Apoc. Shooting them down, learning how and where to attack from, tight narrow rooms that death could appear from any corner and they were the first real glimpse how the aliens live. When I saw the screener of the downed UFO intact I just assumed that it was in!

I would assume you can enter UFOs. One of the cinematics has the squad looking out at a crashed UFO. It would be a strange thing to get rid of. And I'm sure we've got multi-level maps -- Jake talks about the gas station being a one of the 'flattest' levels they could show. Also, I'm not really seeing any evidence that the maps are going to be smaller than the original.

If Jake is such a big fan of the original has he claims, surely he can't possibly overlook the UFO's. The whole aspect of trying to keep UFO's intact to unlock research options was one of the most fun/important strategic elements of the original. Also sorry for calling you Shirley.

    A) I'd bet $10 that there'll be shot-down and landed UFOs you'll need to enter to kill aliens and whatnot. Jake's on record as saying the gas station preview has (a lot?) less levels than most (many?) maps.

    B) They're hand-making how many different maps? Making a gas station look nice can't be that much different or that much more complex than making an alien UFO look nice if you have to hand-draw each of them.

    C) The only gameplay video I've seen so far was on a map that was also supposedly smaller than average/normal.

    D) You guys will get your unmentionables in a twist over anything. http://ignitegt.com/2011/09/pc-vs-console/ SFW

A recent Interview that focused on the "Gunslinger" perk contrasted it with the Sniper's traditional long range perk by saying that a sniper rifle would be useless in the narrow hallway of an alien UFO. That's the closest thing to confirmation of interior UFO fighting that I have seen so far.

I want your proof. I've seen nothing to indicate that this is true. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Read the post above yours. There's the direct evidence countering the OP's misguided fear.

Just remember guys, that maps are FIXED. So they will have to create a map for every type of downed UFO in every type of environment that it could possibly crash. That might be a lot of different maps, which means that they may dumb it down to a couple UFO types in a couple environments. Simply for the sake of map makers time allocation.

Unless they create a trigger where, once you reach a point, it loads a 'new' map where your guys are now inside the UFO.

I think Faraxis is smarter than that. Remember a few things:

They push out an alpha as fast as they can to do tons of playtesting. This means they have to have maps.
Knowing that they're going to need a lot of maps they probably have a design team working on nothing but maps and UFO maps and all that stuff.
They've been working on it for years already. That's enough time for a professional designer to churn out thousands of maps.

They've already said something like 200 hundred maps. If only fifty of those contain UFOs I'll be happy.

I can't prove any of this, but I doubt sincerely that it's something they've cut back on.

True. It won't be an issue if they have enough maps made. As long as we have 3-4 varieties of the more common ufo maps, and maybe 2-3 of the less common ones, Ill be happy.

I remember people saying the same thing about limiting the squad size to 6 or not having random maps and it still happened.

    Hah.. true..

Honestly, the single most irritating thing about this iteration (I can pretty much swallow everything else) is the lack of random or even semi-random maps. I know some people argue that even the semi random maps were predictable, but its a hell of a lot less predictable than playing the same map over and over. And I know, I know, they have many maps. You know what? So did Combat Mission. But its the handful of more common maps that you end up hitting repeats over and over that drive you crazy. I mean, even randomizing where the cover (like barrels, cars, etc) are on a given map is still more interesting than the same damn things in the same spots every time.

One of the main attractions of the original game was the ufo missions - jake soloman had already said on some of the bigger ufo missions a ufo will pretty much fill the whole map - so yes it is in the game - the one thing i am starting to think thou is alphacent and depth charge are the same person - there trolling is so similar - i think its just the same person constantly winding people up.
I just aint rising to it.

Hmmm...Yeah it's most definitivly possible. They both showed up at more or less the same time and they started trollin' away.

In one of his interviews Jake Solomon mentioned that large ufo maps are some of the biggest around.
Now ask yourself: would they really design a map with one big alien spaceship and NOT allow you to enter it?

Yeah, but they already have 200 maps (I think that was the number) so like I said if even a quarter have UFOs that's actually a lot.

Though, even in the original UFOs didn't have varying designs for their class, so as long as they have a lot of maps with them it'll essentially be the same thing.

I don't even have to click on the "Show post" button to know that the OP is full of nonsense (cuz I decided to block him since he's full of said nonsense). He's been hatin' hardcore on the game since nearly the start.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Agree. I think if anyone has seen / read even a small handful of interviews from Firaxis staff, it's clear they are preserving a lot from the original game. Just ignore the thread. (but of course, here I am adding to it.)

He probably works for Xenonauts or something and is concerned about the big bite of its sales Xcom EU will take; so he's trying to pick holes in the game even when there's clear evidence he's wrong.

You guys think the 'inside ufo' will be a part of the map you are on or will you have to load up a new map?

It isn't like raging paranoia is new to this forum. It actually is kind of fitting considering this is an alien invasion game. I haven't thought about this but they are releasing this game awfully close to the Mayan "big change" which a lot of crazy people think must mean introduction to aliens. Get your tinfoil out, we're making some hats!

yes, thats what i thought of as well...instance it. this way you could be able to "paste" two levels to one. and also ANY of the two really, so you could go crazy with the variations.
on the other hand, if you "instance" an alien ship, it will make it that much harder to allow "alternative entrances" for alternative tactics.

There is clear evidence that he's wrong - Jake himself has mentioned about alien ships being 'big maps'. That means you can walk around inside them and anyone who doesn't see that is a right pillock.

Oh and it should be obvious to most people that my post wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

As for him being an angry fan? He's a troll if ever I saw one. What is there to be angry about - that we're finally getting a proper remake for the 1994 game?

I often sit here at my workstation daydreaming what Jake and the crew are doing at this very moment in Firaxis land. What are they coding? My conclusion? They have finished the game, they are sitting there laughing at me and taunting me with it.. saying that I can't have it for 6 more months.
