I'm new to this game and very confused

Hi guys,

I'm confused about this game what am I suppose to be doing each day?
I created some farms yesterday to help create more population, I logged on today and I don't yet have enough food for another pop. So does that mean I don't have anything to do until tomorrow? What's the point of login in? Assuming tomorrow I have another pop will the only thing I can do tomorrow be create a house and wait a few more days for another pop? That seems way too slow to be any fun, I feel like I must be missing something obvious.
