You guys are choosing the easy, cheesey way out of this debate. Forget the rocket launcher. Anyone can successfully argue for class locked weapons for that... You could discuss perhaps the targeting mechanism is difficult, the activation is difficult, etc. etc.

Let's make it a little more spicy:

Why in the hell is a shotgun class locked? You are telling me that if I can use an assault rifle, a shotgun would baffle my little Terran brain? I wouldn't even be able to argue that you should suffer heavy penalties for using it. A small penalty, sure; but not a penalty large enough to make it unusable.

Sure, you could argue for it, but really, I'm pretty sure it's just a peep sight, a safety, and a trigger. I think I could figure out how to launch and blow up a car within a few seconds. Bet I'd hit the car, too. Bottom line is, weapon systems aren't very complex to operate. By design. Class locks are stupid.

I don't see it as class locking (not really, I'm using the term for sake of argument) I see it as specialization, plus do we know if a support guy can use it as well as an assault guy?

The heavy is the only person who uses the LMG. So why would you take that away and give him a shotgun?
The sniper is good with sniper rifles if anything is more opposite than a sniper rifle it's a shotgun.

I guess you could but shotguns on a SHIV, but that would kind of be well... not big enough.

I used to train troops on the Carl-G, it really isn't much more than you said, just got to do things in Order, but Soldiers are taught to do everything as a drill, so it really is simple enough to learn. You might get the occasional Inkidu, but for the most part someone could figure it out on the fly.

No need to make this personal. It is just a game.

This is too easy. These are special shotguns that use 'magical' ammo, thus it requires special handling a normal soldier doesn't have. Its like The Walking Dead, anyone watched that? Hershel also had a magical shotgun that uses ammo but has unlimited amount, so those shotguns do exist. Hershel is an old farmer with 60+ years of life experience, which explains why he was high enough level to use the 'magic' shotgun.

    Another criticism debunked!

Aww, no one found my example funny. I thought it was funny to use Hershal using his shotgun as an example, but I guess no one here watches the Walking Dead.. his shotgun was a huge topic over at the Walking Dead forum.

The entire weapon class locking system is very gamey. It makes the game feel like its just a game instead of making the player feel like they are in a xcom experience. The developer has already chosen a gamey route based on other gaming features. So that's that.

I just don't think it's class locking. I think it's just specialization. Everyone class has something they're good at so why give them something that they're not as talented with? It's like giving a baseball player a cricket bat. Sure, he can probably hit a ball with it, but it might not be as effective, or you run the risk of it being too effective and it'd be a good old fashioned roflstomp.

If I had a crack sniper who was only good with sniper rifles I would never give him something else, I'd rather cycle in another rookie and get him some experience.
