    Optimal City Size

Happiness is almost always an issue for me. I'm guessing its because I let my cities grow too large too quickly. Does anybody have tips on how many cities and at what population I should be shooting for? What's the curve I should be shooting for when it comes to pop growth?

Unhappiness from population comes from two sources, city size and the number of cities. If you're expanding too quickly that could be a reason for unhappiness.

I rarely have a problem with happiness as long as I don't expand too quickly. However, I'd suggest that rather than limiting city growth (unless your cities are so big that all the productive tiles are being worked), you focus on building wonders and buildings that assist in increasing happiness. Just remember to build markets and banks in your cities to pay for these buildings.

Happiness is supposed to be an issue, it is a currency you use to grow. Invest it well and it will bring returns, squander it and you are gonna have a bad time. But either way it should always go low or you are pretty much wasting it.

    Optimal city size? huge!
Optimal number of cities? Depends on your strategy.

What should you be shooting for? More.. always more. If you get stagnant then you messed up somewhere.

But in all seriousness, I always build as many happiness buildings as possible. Happiness and food mean more people. More people means more people doing things. Which is always good. Ask China.
