    Collateral Damage

    Hey all,

my first time on these forums after noticing the game was in production.
I must say that I'm really looking forward to a new XCOM and it looks like these guys are doing a lot of things right, judging from the few videos I've seen.

Back when I was playing the old game, a big factor for me was the destructible surroundings. I'd rather just blast away a house than walk around it, and, if an alien had gone into a building, I'd fire incendiary rockets to level the place. Easier that way

I hope they keep that aspect, as the old game made it fun to "leave my mark". I'd like to make the civilians wonder if they were better off with the aliens

Well, you probably wont be doing it with rockets (Heavy gets 1 rocket per mission, though that could be increased through perks), but if grenades are an infinite use item with a cooldown, then you might, provided they damage structures decently.

Walls and anything cover can be blown up, floors and roofs are not. Probably because it uses the Unreal Engine.

Easier - and more realistic in my opinion. If this went down in the real world and the troops saw an alien sneak inside a building, it would make sense to at least melt the walls with some plasma burst, if not actually level the place. Remember, civvies could be inside. You're right though - collateral damage was a big part of the original game - remember blasting a Cyberdisc and levelling an entire building at the same time?

Why not? You could in the original.

You could damage roofs/floors/ceilings in the original and I'm sure you'll be able to in this game as well. What you couldn't do in the original (and won't be able to in this game either) is destroy a wall, thus removing the support for the floors above and causing the entire building to collapse on itself. That's a shame, especially as you could do that in Apocalypse and it would add a new tactical layer to the battles in my opinion. I do find this step back a bit bewildering.

Really? I'm pretty sure you could not.

You are half right. You could not destroy floors unless there was a level below them as for roofs you could.

    Good to know XD
Anyway being able to destroy floors was so unimportant I never even realized it was possible.

Yea they only reason I know is because I had one guy in a flying suit get stuck because he could not go down stairs so I fired at the wall but he missed and hit the floor which was destroyed.

Shooting a ceiling out and then floating up thru it was a classic strategy of the original.

To the OP, of you only seen a few videos so far you have a lot of work to do surprising theres lots out there unfortunately they all reiterate the same thing.

We haven't heard much about specialty grenades like incindiary but it's possible only the support class will be able to use them (as is true with smoke nades). Plus it seems that it will be a trade off, do you want to bring that nade, or that medkit ?

I also think in the sub-quests portion of maps, I have a gut feeling you might be rewarded for doing minimal collateral damage ...

I've only seen the videos in the sticky with game information gathered so far. Are there any other good video hubs with goodies?

You seen this stuff ? The 40 minute PAX stuff is good too, it should've been in that stickied thread too.

While the environment is destructible, i've yet to see anyone actually target an object. Hopefully we can go back to shooting gas pumps for splash damage and leveling houses to eliminate that one pesky sniper. Hell, one of my favorite tactics in the original was having a soldier shoot through a wall with a laser rifle in order to target the alien on the other side of the building.

When you watch the gas station demo with the guy driving it, he says something like "the alien makes a panic shot" referring to him being suppressed, but the alien to me makes no mistake and targets the gas pump behind the Support soldier - so I would say you can for sure target the destructible environment....

I loved that part. Here's to hoping there are similar "oh crap I'm glad we didn't get caught in THAT explosion" moments.

Kinda sad to hear about the floors and roofs, but oh well, can't have everything.
