100 gold – big spender or hoarder

I find myself in the position where I eventually obtain 100 gold with the free settler and normally have my 3rd settler waiting to allow me to build two new cities (3 in all inc palace) but I’m never sure as how to spend the money. Sometimes I legion / horse rush just to pressure the opponent or choke but mostly I tend to build a library in two cities (after a little production to reduce the cost and researched Alphabet). Is the library a good idea this early in the game?? I understand it is totally situational dependant. What do you spend your gold on or do you hoard it until later in the game when the need arises??

Just seen Maelfyn's post on spending gold in ancient. Maybe I should pay a little more attention...

Just like you mentioned yourself already, it is purely situational. But i usually have a good sense where to spend the gold on before i even reach it. If you do have your third settler i assume you are not horserushing. A library is unadvisable that early in the game, but if you have Monarchy and have a double dye spot its def worth it.
Or when you are playing Greece and your grew Athens abit.

I think in most my games where my 100g is not used for horserushing i use it for expansion. To rush settlers out asap and set out your borders. I build a library in 99/100 games and the occasional Barracks.

At the end it depends on your civ, your opponent, your surroundings etc

Your talking about multiplayer right? Being aggressive right off the bat is the best thing to do, libraries are good depending on the situation and where you build it, but expanding is more important if you plan on doing anything in the mid to late game. Sometimes I will build a galley before I have my 100g if it looks like there are some islands fairly close, sometimes you can get 100g just by naming tiles and getting friendlies on islands or even 7cog Most people advise against libraries but if the situation permits I think they are very beneficial...

Generally speaking, the quicker you get your horsearmy out the better. So if you are waiting for 100 gold before horserushing it's probably a bad idea. Two libraries that early is probably a mis allocation of resources. It's best to do things situationally but here are a few ideas.
    1) Rush a barracks and then start a legion rush (non vet legions can be a bad idea)
    2) Rush a galley for exploration, remember to put a warrior on it though.
    3) Rush settlers
    4) Go for catapults. (remember if you advance to medeviel you'll have to deal with inflation unless americans)

I find it benificial to build a galley and a library but only if ive got a nice fish spot. I would never build horseman after 100 gold bc if im horse rushing as soon as i get gold to rush a horseman. Having a library in one of my 2 to 3 early cities helps me get to COL and Currency as fast as possible then I'll switch to gold and start expanding. Having that early horse army is nice for defense in my expansion phase but sometimes im forced to get mathematics and nav to do so its all game dependant.
