    PC vs. Console

I love the original XCOM: UFO Defense on the pc, but after hearing the remake was going to both consoles and PC's i was wondering which to buy the game for. I was wondering if there are any significant differences between the console and PC versions of the game. If anyone knows of any differences comment them on this thread. Also you can answer the poll of PC vs. Console here.

    PC: Mod-ability and separate UI

Console:... console. As much as I love consoles for some games, I don't think XCOM:EU has anything special going for it other than a console UI.

    I'm getting it for PC.

I'll be getting it on my 360. I don't actually use a lot of mods and I'm really keen on having a good solid turn based game on my 360 - there is rather a dearth of those (I may have even pointed this out in the past). Hopefully it will be successful enough to prompt developers to make more of it and that will make me very happy.

I pretty much only play RTS games on PC anyway.

I'm getting it for 360. I hope this spurs on a development of strategy games for consoles. If those Total War guys would listen to me about Shogun 2 I'd be happy as well.

I'm getting it on PC. I liked some of the mods for the original EU, getting it on PC will give me something to play downrange, and for me XCOM has always been a PC game (though yes I know about the original EU also being on the PS1). Plus with where they are taking this EU I think I'm going to sadly need some mods to enjoy the game to it's fullest potential. Not that I think mods will be needed to enjoy the game (and I don't even know if mods for what I want will be possible), but I'm really hoping for a way to add back in larger squads (which would also likely mean making most maps larger and adding in more aliens), a tactical inventory to manage (I miss being able to pick up things from the ground. Most commonly picked up items were grenades and electro-flares but also sometimes soldiers/aliens), and the ability to revamp the classes so that you can equip any soldier with any weapon/item and still have it be balanced.

PC all the way baby! Console has its place for some fast paced games but I just can't play strategy games on them.

Oddly, I don't care what I play strategy games on so long as it's well designed. For example, my iPad is filled with turn based strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Civilization Revolution (which is fantastic btw) and Crimson Seas (as examples, I have more!) - with Ghost Trick, Angry Birds: Space and Kingdom Rush being my "bit of strange" when I want something else.

Minding I'll play turn based games anywhere these days, I'm just thankful to finally see a "proper" one that isn't a Japanese Strategy RPG (I do like these as well, not disparaging them at all!) on a mainstream console for once.

Also speaking of iOS, please make an iOS version of XCOM:EU. I'll still buy it even if I have the 360 version. Having this game mobile would be fantastic.

It appears we are almost outnumbered 2:1. I feel we should circle the wagons now.

Better we'll run back to the Skyranger and dust off leaving them all!

The argument for playing it on consoles that you've presented intrigues me, fellas. My initial instinct is to not play it on console because, tbh, I cannot see the controller being useful for playing a TBS. However, if it's done right it might feel as natural as a mouse and keyboard. I guess I will have to argue that I will reserve judgement... (but I'm still leaning towards a PC purchase).

ps3 mainly. but then i will also have a copy on pc for mods. there are some great turn based games for consoles + xcom enemy unknown was alright on ps1 which introduced me to the xcom series.

the total war developers say the current consoles aint strong enough to be able to play them so heres hopeing that the new consoles can when they come out. off topic what would people think of a mish mash of total war with xcom enemy unknown game mechanics? like a world war or fantasy setting.

Halo Wars was an RTS on a console and I felt it still played very well and the controls felt natural. As a kid one of my friend's had the PS version of EU and the controls from what I remember weren't too bad (though that was 14-15 years ago...) For me it isn't because I'm worried about the console controls being bad as I feel most bad console controls are because the designers didn't put enough effort into making them work right. It's more about modability and the fact that I have all the other XCOM games for the PC and it would feel odd for me to suddenly jump to the console now.

If an RTS can play well and feel natural with everything happening real-time, then there is no reason for a TBS to handle poorly except for designers not putting in the effort.

You're outnumbered far more than 2:1, but your numbers are so low you couldn't even make a circle if you wanted!

Lol I was going to make a comment about making a triangle, but you know once you make the comment then another person will vote and screw that up!

At first I was going to make a comment about a square, then I looked at the number and I was "lol, no even enough for that".

On a serious note though, I played the first game on PC, it seems only fitting. I read something about a more complex UI for the PC, something about "German mode" or similar? or did I dream that? Anyways, I'm sure they made a good job adapting the game for consoles, but games like this just begs to be played on PC. Also, for PC they said there will be a grid overlay for squad movement, but the game is still "gridless" free movement, I wonder how is that going to work.

Possibly like a snap-to grid in a paint program?

Probably something that allows you to view a "grid" for more precise movements. Kind of like if you have ever played Runescape and how that game doesn't have a "grid" system but yet there is still effectively a grid in regards to where you can move and depending on your graphics setting you can make out where each movement square starts/stops

PC because of the Modding !

  18. #18
I'm going to buy it for both 360 and PC.

PC for the modding tools, mainly, but 360 because sometimes I like to just lounge around on the couch with the big TV and play slower paced stuff but also because I want to support the development of strategy (especially TBS) on console.

I owned both Enemy Unknown and Terror From the Deep on console and found the interfaces fine. I have absolutely zero worries about the console UI for this game based on those experiences.

It will almost 100% certainly be better on PC in terms of controls. I just don't really mind because it's a turn based game: So I have all the time in the world to make my decisions and ensure I put people where I want them. The advantage of being able to do this while tucked up in bed or on the couch is the reason I'll get the 360 version.

Also I am always into games that increase my achievement score. Always. Plus we are now capable of forming a defensive pentagram! This is progress!

    I don't own a console, so PC I guess.
Then again, I don't own a mobile phone, either. Never needed them newfangled gizmos when I was young, don't need them now!

The only thing that seems awkward on a console is "mousing" the cursor around when assigning moves or targets. If there's a qualifier button for "fast scroll", I don't think it would be much of a problem.

Actually from what I understand it's a scroll based system. You don't cursor. You just cycle which is in a lot of ways faster than finding your units by cursor.

Ask anybody who ever hot-keyed squads in an RTS.

Also, TBS games have a long history on consoles and handhelds (which are basically self-contained consoles. I think it just takes care.

I'm waiting for the system requirements. I have a mid-level laptop (that does play Civ5 comfortably), but if the requirements are too high, I'll be getting this on PS3.

I'll be playing it on Xbox 360 purely because I have a Mac. Now if Firaxis were to release a Mac version of the game simultaneously…

If nothing else, if your PC can handle it, the graphics will be far superior. And the UI will be easier to use.

PC all the way. Mods, better control method for the genre, cheaper price, better graphics, better sound and so on...

@Spleenslitta - agreed. I hate playing FPS or any kind of strategy game without a mouse/keyboard. Mouse/keyboard is clearly the best control method for those genres - you've only got to look at pro gaming to see that. When an FPS is being played at pro level, it's always with mouse/keyboard.

PC. I only have a Wii and I got it for my boy. I don't mind Consoles, but I just figure if the game is on PC, that's where I will play it. Plus I mod.

PC all the way. Mods. Keyboard + Mouse. Plus, I hope that I really like this game and will still want to play it 10 years down the line. I'm pretty sure I'll have a PC in 10 years, but I might not own an XBox or a PS3. Who knows it the XBox 9999 or the PS6 will be backward compatible or not?

That's another plus for the PC that I'd never thought of before. Good point! Here we are, still playing a game from 1994 on ultra modern PCs - can you slot a PS One game into a PS3 and expect it to work? Nope.

I own a PS3, and my friend has a Wii. So I can say for sure: PC! Mouse+Keyboard control just saves so much time. And because my PC is much more powerfull (memory and CPU) then the PS3, the game will load faster.

I can slot my SNES game into my SNES and expect it to work! or My PS1 game into my PS2. Or my GB game into my GBA SP :P

But yea I understand what you're saying. Consoles aren't really known for their backwards compatibility which means you either have to hold onto an old system if you want to play your older games and that just sucks given how much space that can eat up around your house.

  35. #35
Personally I am going to get it for console. Mainly because I don't have a good enough computer to run software from 2000 so it definatly wouldn't run 2012 software. The other reason is that I like the smaller controller over the keyboard. I may eventually get it for PC but that would be when I buy a new computer.

It comes down to Graphics detail level and UI for me...

    1. Graphics will be always better on a PC for those gamers that want to spend the money on decent kit.
    2. UI for a game this complex, will obvious work on a console. But I think its rule of thumb that strategy games work more efficiently with a mouse interface. Mass selecting groups, quickly clicking buttons etc...

I'm sure the console will be a great version of the game, but its PC all the way for me.

Agreed with Wrench on UI but there won't/shouldn't be mass selecting of groups since this isn't Starcraft 2
