    Smile Frontier / elite remake

I'm over the moon that firaxis are making a modern xcom game and cannot wait to play this. The original game was my 2nd favourite game on the Amiga. So... What do does anyone think the chances are of a remake of frontier? (my fave game if you hadn't have already guessed!)

Dave Braben has supposedly been working on a follow up for years now but I just don't see it ever coming off. Considering elite and frontier were so much of a success in the 80s/90s i'm surprised that a developer hasn't already cashed in on the idea of a remake. The game was the first ever open world game that had no narrative whatsoever and you could play however you liked. There was so much to do and such a massive game somehow managed to fit on a single 1.4mb floppy!

After seeing how amazing the new xcom eu game is Looking, I couldn't help thinking how fab they could make a new space trading game! Just make sure this makes it to the consoles aswell as pc!

    So...
Jake Solomon- read this and sort it out! Haha!

If you're looking for a modern "Elite type" game, check out: EVE Online. EVE was directly inspired by Elite, the developers even said as much. Wikipedia has a good bit to say on the topic! (See the Development section where it's pointed out that EVE is Elite-inspired).

Thanks Headkase, I'd forgotten about EVE online. I did look at the site a couple of years ago but I never got round to giving it a serious look as I'm pretty sure my PC would struggle to run it. It does look amazing though! Hopefully at some point there will be something similar made for consoles as that's where I do my gaming when I get chance! Thanks for going to the trouble of making some hyperlinks for me I'll have a look at the sites now.

to be honest i wouldnt bank on ever seeing elite 4 -not while david braben is in control anyway - when elite came out it was years ahead of its time and as you have already said - an all time classic
He has spent the last 20 years producing to be honest producing crappy second rate games that no ones intrested in - He has also been spouting for years that elite 4 is still on the cards - it is in deveopment - it isnt in deveopment - it is in development.
he is starting to sound like George Broussard and duke nukem forever - when its ready - right we all know what happened there?
I used to be brabens biggest fan - not anymore - to many broken promises - he has had an eternity to make a great successor to elite but has decided to concentrate on creating crap . when he had a goldmine sitting on his lap.
Times moved on - whatever he does now its to little - to late.

When cutting remarks like that come out from a massive elite fan myself - you can understand why people have lost patiance with david braben.

Yeah, I agree with you. That's why someone else should develop a similar game for consoles!

Very late reply, but obviously someone up there heard you:

Star Citizen - Squadron 42 by Chris Roberts (Wing Commander, Freelancer) for PC.

A thread on this topic was closed:

    http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread...on-Kickstarter!

Over concerns about promotion and solicitation. After it was closed more discussion took place and our stance was softened. If you provide a link to a preview, review, or independent news item then that is always ok. Direct solicitation, especially blatant, will be a judgment call on review.

This thread may stay open and I will reopen the above given thread too.

I totally understand that point of view - I was getting like that myself, but in case anyone hasn't heard yet, Frontier do want to make Elite 4 (known now as Elite: Dangerous) if they can raise £1.25m via a Kickstarter campaign. So if you want to finally see a new Elite game: not an Elite clone - a bona-fide sequel, then get pledging!
