Quick one. What is the approach of the devs on trade, is it important as an emphasis to the developpers and will there ever be add ons (in the form of dlcs or expansions) to this mechanic? Something I miss was the intricacies of trade and its impact on almost all aspects of the game. I would like to tknow the reasoning behind the reduction of the trade mechanisms, and if it will ever be enhanced.

thank you, cant wait for G&K!

Yes, I miss international trade routes, among other things...

As I said a globe built this way scales, you do it by adding more hexagons in kind of rings around the pentagons, you don't need to sub-divide anything (not that you can tessellate a hexagon with smaller hexagons any way).

    Sure. You can use triangles.

Anyway this isn't the thread to discuss the idea's merits or otherwise.
Not sure if it has come up separately since but here's an old thread I started on the subject:

    1) Is there any chance on getting a map with an option for Earth with traditional starting locations?

    2) Any chance of Australia being a DLC at some stage? It's a physically large country and a strong game buying region so it seems like a logical option.

    3) Any plans for new Natural Wonders?

As someone who grew up in a newly-middle-class family in London (grandparents working class, some my mother's generation upgraded to middle class), I'm amazed that anyone in London could think Elizabeth's accent in game sounds working class. It doesn't sound like Elizabeth II's speech, but if it had that would just seem comical, like it was lampooning our current Queen. She sounds largely like conventional RP.

I don't know if this is the right thread but I would really love (not for the expansion I'm sure, but perhaps for later incarnations of the civ series) to see a 3D-model of my city when I enter it. If you've ever played heroes of might and magic II or III you know what I'm talking about. It starts with only a few buildings but as you advance and build buildings a granary, a library etc would be added.
I just think this would make you feel alot more involved with your civilization and your cities. I guess my question is weither something like this have been considered and if so why it hasn't made it into the game.

    Diplomacy

    Hi ,
    My question is;
"What was the purpose of changing the diplomatic effect system from Civ4?
That was a very clear and understandable system in Civ4, but in Civ5 nothing is clear.
I think they have done this change because of the abscense of Religion, and if that is the case, with religion is back in game, do we get a more detailed and reasonable diplmacy again?"

If we call a game "Strategy", it must have a detailed and understandable diplomacy engine in it.

I am new to the forum here. Have played the civ systems into civ v.
-- Why was it decided to go with simultaneous combat in MP? Do you guys receive positive feedback on silmultaneuos play? I love the intereaction of players, especially your own gaming group, but hate that I cannot click fast enough.
-- I dislike being denounced and attacked when I have not perpetrated any aggressive moves. Is the system weighted to reflect the fact that I have not attacked anyone (except barbs) and still get penalized in the worlds eyes?
-- When will PBEM be an option? I know it is not for everyone but this was my primary playing mode for Civ IV. In fact, I still play Civ IV for this very reason. Not likely to buy a Civ V expansion until this option exists. My gaming time windows are not very large so I like the flexibility of churning out a log everyday. Is it a big deal to put it in or is the Civ IV programming fairly replicatable for this feature to be included in Civ V?

    Thanks

I second this one. I'd really like to know whether some types of art assets will become moddable after G&K. These include: improvements, features, terrain types and icon art (e.g, gold, research beakers, and so forth). Unit art is currently moddable but so difficult as to be almost off-limits.

They can, but the one who publishes first gets the credit. As (s)he should. And in this case that's VEM, by many months.

How did you decide which resources to include?

What influenced the decision to drop bronze as a strategic resource?

What do the developers do on their off-time?

What is a typical day like for an artist, a designer, a programmer?

How does the team celebrate new launches (i.e. when Civ V was finished)?

How many vacation days does a typical employee at Firaxis get?

Bronze never made much sense to me, I know this is a game not a simulator, but everything else is a single raw material (or something based almost solely on it) whereas this is a manufactured alloy reliant upon two such items - that are almost always geographically separated.

I didn't have time to read through the comments, and I'm sure someone would have asked this already, but I'll ask it just in case...

Are they planning to eventually have a second expansion pack? Will there be many more DLCs after G&Ks?

Also, how important is historical accuracy to them in regard to designing leaders? Although Boudicca looks pretty cool, that's definitely not what she looked like in real life - to give one example. A good portion of the Civ series gamer population are also either history buffs, or at least very interested in history, so I would've expected a more accurate animation...Unless they are choosing what they think would sell better over would is more accurate?
That being said, I understand that for a game to keep its enjoyment there is only so far you can go to keep it historically accurate, but making the leader animations accurate doesn't cross this line.

If they're not going for accuracy, can we change Catherine? At least she was tolerable in IV with the more robust, explorer/military type look. Now she's just a pampered little princess harlot

I think we could change a lot more than just Catherine if we are throwing accuracy out the door, like in the case of Boudicca. It seems they are sticking to accuracy to a degree, but by no means all of the time.

Multiplayer: When will we see a working product here? Multiplayer is not working as it should even a long time after release. Very poor.

Multiplayer: Can we have mods enabled for multiplayer too? What is the reason behind the "no mods in mp" policy?

Are you actually working on fixing the mp part of the game?

Too much of an opportunity for "cheating" during gameplay as anyone could completely unbalance key-settings (even if all players would claim using the same files). And, since such run-time assets aren't verifiable while lobby-network gathers up participants... fairplay becomes (somehow) unprovable online.

OK - my turn. 1.What's the story whit Large Hadron Collider, Three Gorges Dam and Panama Canal ? 2.Can we have option to turn of/on El Dorado and The Fountain of Youth ? 3.Can music ( I love music in Civ5 ) can play further after diplo screen show up? OK, that's it, sorry for my english.

For each dev that would like to answer:

What are your personal favourite game settings? Number of civs, map type, game length, advanced settings, etc.

Either for single player, or multi player, or both (separately).

It would be interesting to know

Bonus question along the lines of the AI questions asked before:
About what % of man-hours would you estimate has been spent on building and modifying the AI, compared to the rest of gameplay development?

I think this would be very interesting to know, and give some insight in matters beyond mere playing likes.

Well he said he was asking for podcasts he was recording over the next few days. I presume we will eventually hear the podcasts, so I doubt he'll respond to anything directly in the thread

    Fantasy wonders should be optional.
And I hate how the music skips to next track after you talked with an AI leader.

Trying to figure out the most constructive way to phrase this:

What made the Huns seem like a good idea for a civ, considering they don't meet the criterion of having their own cities? Aren't they the poster-children for barbarians?

My question to the team is,
We've got many player-made mods, will the changes apply at them after I have the G&K?

How are leaders and specific incarnations of a civilisation or culture chosen? It seems that some regions see overlapping representation in a variety of civs and leaders that came at different times, while others get lumped together and ignore temporal distinctions.

For example 'India' is a fairly modern invention as a political and cultural unit, and excludes countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, which were all or some (at various points) part of the various empires that ruled the subcontinent.

You have Asoka of the Mauryan empire (a leader in Civ IV) who oversaw and propagated the spread of Buddhism as a global religion, while affording rights and protection to other faiths.

Under the Mughal empire (largely Persian in culture and identity but descendants of the Mongols), Islam spread to South Asia, and much of the iconic architecture which people think of as 'Indian' was built by them. Shah Jahan (descendant of both Chengiz Khan and Charlemagne) built a whole range of grand mosques, forts and the Taj Mahal. Another, Aurangzeb, was a prolific conqueror and at the height of his reign he ruled over 1/4 of the world's population! Not only that, but the Mughals were a powerful empire whose rule saw a flourishing of culture, the economy, science and religious tolerance.

I'm not saying that Ghandi is undeserving, but he was not an official leader, and he is more closely tied to modern India than the other South Asian countries whose histories were inextricably intertwined with India's until the last century. There are plenty of other deserving leaders in the history of the subcontinent, and separating modern India from all of that arguably glosses over hundreds of years of history.

Now on the other hand, other civs overlap. For example, many people don't realise that Chengiz Khan's son, Kublai Khan was founder of the Yuan Dynasty in China and ruled as emperor of both China and Mongolia. A case can be made by looking more at modern incarnations, but Tibet is part of China now and Civ V has Lhasa as a city state! Now if you're looking at the Tibetan empire from before it came under Chinese rule, why not have it as a militaristic city state rather than a religious one? Under their own empire the Tibetans were a warring culture that invaded and conquered territories across China and Central Asia.

The Byzantines and the Ottomans overlap in that they largely ruled over the same territories and cities, with the Byzantine capital Constantinople being the old name for the Ottoman capital Istanbul! The Byzantines overlap with the Romans as the distinction between the two is largely a modern one. The Byzantine empire was just a later stage of the Roman empire (though granted, by that time they had opted to orientate themselves more towards Greek culture and away from old Roman culture).

The Celts were a force to be reckoned with across most of western Europe, certainly overlapping with all the modern states there.

Apologies for the rather long elaboration, but I wanted to give some context to how I came up with my questions.

    What about the DLC

    1. Will the old DLC work with the new expansion and be 100% integrated into the game?

    2. Will you be able finally to use DLC in multiplayer with people who dont have it?

I suspect as well, but unlike the leaders you mention, Theodora can never actually claim (even on a fictitious level like Dido) to have actually been a ruler. It's a bizarre choice.

I would love to know what work is being done to expand the soundtrack for all civs (both expansion, which I presume get their own new music, and the original/dlc).
    Looking forward to the expansion!
