I do not have access to a copy of Windows right now, will keep trying Boxer for a bit, and expect to buy a Windows laptop in two weeks.
If someone knows their way around Boxer or how to find the files I just downloaded from Steam let me know.

I have Steam versions of all X-COMS and they run fine.
The sound and screams also are still as creepy as they were in my youth...
Bought a whole pack, and I might even give a try to X-COM enforcer and X-COM interceptor...
UFO Afterlight is an ok game... It resembles more Fallouts tactics than UFO though. - still it's fun to play, but it's not a strictly TBS
UFO Extraterrestrials - The Gold edition, which I bought, was really fun, although at some point it became boring... I liked the concept of micromanaging air combat, although at some point it was too annoying. I'd rather stick to the original ones.
The ground combat was fairly good and challanging, although at some point IMO they overdid the AoE attacks on enemies. Firestorms and gas clouds everywhere. I liked the development of soldiers. I think that there were too many combat tech levels... By the time you got into production and equiping your ships and soldiers with the latest tech, it was already severly outdated and the late game enemies have mostly nuilt in weapons, so no scavenging...
Still playing this. Surprisingly, once you get past the clumsy interface things start to warm up a bit. I've captured the Airport and Drassen so far. Going for the mine next. Not ashamed to admit there's a bit of fun to be had here. Still hate the camera though. And the graphics don't get better the more you play.
Add another one for Xenonauts. Been playing that since back when all you could do was poke around the Geoscape and look at the base screen. Version 9.3 is supposed to be up as soon as the fine folks at Desura wake up and hot damn I'm lookin forward to my first terror mission.
I've also been playing a lot of Unity of Command. It's operational level strategy as opposed to the tactical level but it's the most fun you'll have in a wargame without actually busting out the hex map of Europe and pushing counters.
I had completely missed UFO Extraterrestrials. I just finished the Gold edition (with mods) and it's very good. Not perfect, but definitely the best x-com inspired game I have ever played. I tried Afterlight, but couldn't stomach the annoying voice acting (which you hear every time you select a soldier, that is, every 2 seconds), the pseudo-turn based combat, and having to defend the same territories over and over again.
As far as 2012 goes, there will also be UFO Extraterrestrials 2 (developed with a modder's help for extra ideas/balance, which is a really nice touch), UFO online (tried the closed beta, so far unimpressed bacause very non-tactical) and Xenonauts (already mentioned, but looking promising).
Yeah. Loved UFO:ET. Looking forward to the sequel.
Also played UFO Afterlight. Not a bad game overall. Huge variety of aliens, some of them very very tough. But I found the maps a little too cramped and awkward to move around in. Plus the game design doesn't exactly encourage a tactical style of play.
Holy crap this looks good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgOol...feature=colike SFW
http://www.irontowerstudio.com/ Age of Decadence now in public beta
Turn-based, fantasy RPG with tactical combat.
I downloaded the windows 7 compatable version of the original X-com from steam. That and mass effect 3 should last me a while.
It looked interesting, altho combat threw me a bit, watching crossbowmen taking several shots before the enemy moved/attacked again, but since beta, will keep eye on it.
Been playing UFO afterlite but most are right, it doesnt have the spookiness of Xcom, more just like a tactical shooter with sci fi elements. The one thing I didnt like about most of these games, was lack of hybrid weapons. You found an alien rifle and you researched it to make a humanized version. But now it just seems you research the ability to use them.
My gaming seems to take on what I am reading and last few months has been sci fi, I am still waiting to get back to WWII mood to play combat mission normandy since collecting dust since bought but never got into the mood.
Dead State
Age of Decadence
Project Zomboid (not turn based but certainly requires you to think about what you are doing)
Wasteland 2
Shadowrun Returns
Ok, all these (bar AoD and Project Zomboid in beta/alpha respectively) aren't even available in alpha/beta/demo but certainly worth keeping an eye on. Personally I've pre-ordered and/or backed Kickstart all of these.
The best turn based strategy I have played for a while is for the Playstation 3... "Valkyria Chronicles"... it is a tactical squad based combat game with anime inspired graphics (all scenes look hand drawn) set in a fictional 1935 world war II scenario with spectacular battle settings. It has a great heartfelt story to it and most people will want to replay it at least once if you like tactical battles with no time pressure. This game was out in 2008 but is in such demand that used copies are seen in stores around here going for $39.99 (used!!!)
My only source of pain is that Valkyria Chronicles 2 exists but you need a PSP to play it, and they didn't even localize Valkyria Chronicles 3 for english speakers. Get the word out on this game and make sure that there is at least one other true turn based strategy legend other than XCOM! (c'mon... the world needs more than one!)
just because I see no one mentioning it as a TB-alternative:
BLOODBOWL!
its a solid, good, and fun game. turn based! set in the the warhammer universe where you play american football, but the ball is secondary, really. good, clean, turn based fun; and not easy at all. have a look into it, shoulnd cost much nowadays anymore.
Lol. Yeah, i loved playing Legendary Edition until my buddy upgraded my computer last year. Now it won't even run, no matter what i do. It's for this reason i'm afraid to even get interested in the upcoming Dungeon Bowl.
Now a turn based game coming out next Tuesday completely flew under my radar. Warlock: Master of the Arcane. Essentially, it looks like Civ V in a fantasy world. Not too tactical maybe, but i'll give it a shot until Diablo 3 comes out. Here's a link if anyone's interested.

So I just finished UFO: Extraterrestrials. An interesting game, that was definitely trying to create an XCOM clone. It's definitely a hardcore strategy game. A lot of people on these boards who want more weapons, choices, etc - you should check this out.
A couple of points:
- It has a ridiculous technology/research tree. If you were bored by lasers and plasma, I think there were 7-8 different technologies. Maybe more, I lost count. It was fun to discover all these new technologies. In my mind, this was also a negative. as it got to the point where I kept saying "Really? ANOTHER new line of technology?!".
- The setting is unfortunate. It should have been set on Earth, not an alien planet, but then I understand that they were trying for a different story where Earth is conquered just as we colonize a new planet. It does redeem itself near the end.
- The learning curve has points where the game is tough. My first battle with destroyers - I had to shoot them 20 times to kill them. Fortunately the technology I gained from them allowed me to fight them fairly in the next battle, but it was tough
- There is only one main base and a series of satellite bases for intercepters. I thought this worked really well - micro managing one base was enough.
This is a very reasonable price on Steam, have a look - this kept me busy for a month.
1) Tech tree is overdone IMO ... It's a linear increase to most powerful... I'd rather see it side branching to deal with different types of resistances... Still a few too many... By the time you had your troops equipped with the new tech, your research was two tiers higher.
2) Destroyers? Pfff... Learn to use autofire Heavy lasers... I always had at least two heavies (until I've got to the ultimate rifle) which had heavy lasers... those things were not only quite accurate, but had a lot of punch too... my next heavy equipment was Heavy Ion (since heavy plasma is less accurate than laser and despite single shot being more powerful it does not have auto shot ability) and after that.. rocket launchers with those huge explosives...
I've always preferred the rifles over the heavy rifles. They allowed more movement and were usually only a little less powerful. It was just the one mission I had problems and then I was ok.
Well for me Heavy laser was a must... Sometimes I had really nasty surprises where I could hit a thing with 6-8 shots of laser rifle, and it would still not die... heavy laser usually took 2-3 shots, so one heavy could take out 2 enemies if his auto-shots hit in 100% and that was not so hard with experienced soldiers. It was a critical feature during the disembark phase... two heavies could clear the drop area and take shots without reaction fire (when something is destroyed it does not retaliate)

Yeah, that's why they won the IGF Audience Award.
And:

Yes I play it, same username as here. I will destroy you if you challenge me :P
I havent read all the way through this thread but has anyone mentioned Silent Storm yet?
Silent Storm is an amazing turn based WW2 strategy game
Since the announcement of the release of this game, I lost the taste of playing. Can you believe it? I got into tinkering. My wife is enchanted.![]()
Diablo 3, seeing as I pre-ordered it over the weekend. I couldn't help myself, it was calling to me! Buy me... buy me...
I've started really playing UFO: Alien Invasion. It's good. I like the limits on engineers and scientists. Though, I think that they're a little slow with research.
I am playing Endless space. Not a bad game seeing it's only in alpha.
Google UFO: Alien Invasion. It's pretty beta, but it's fun. Warning though, they tend to throw a lot of a alien missions at you. I got like three terror missions within the same two days. It can be really exhausting. Oh, and no one's a meat shield because you not only get money based on your performance, but soldiers, scientists, and engineers, too.
Whey Hey !
Looks neat. Gonna have to give that a whirl.

X:com apocolypse ..... Games too much fun , I stayed up till 4 am the other night , ooops lol
Well , when you've got 2 crashed UFO's to raid , 4 organisations with aliens beamed in and a lot of research , manufacturing and ammo replenishing ...... And re-arming your troops to do , what choice do you have ?!
God I love this game !!!
Only 4 organisations unfriendly and odviously the cult of Si enemy , so doing well , but I might just go wreck a certain organisation for items and to try get other allies , anyone got advice on that ? Like who's good to raid ?
I found my XCOM: Terror From The Deep box lately in my games cabinett and sat it up to play in DosBox, so i currently play XCOM: TFTD.
I played practically all of the turn based games mentioned in this thread with UFO Extraterrestrials being my personal favorite XCOM clone and found it really surprising that there are only so few really good turn based games on the market. I wish Silent Storm would still work on my new pc but it doesn't due to unknown graphics card.
Not sure the civilization type of games were mentioned in this thread already. They differ in that you don't have a squad that you control but they are also turn based. I don't like Civilization V but played Civ I to Civ IV.
Lately while searching for something worth to play i also stumbled upon Good Old Games: http://www.gog.com which offers just that: good old games. I found a couple of games of which i have fond memories from the 80ies and 90ies, often unmatched in gameplay and fun by newer games except real blockbusters like Skyrim.
After reading this topic seeing the sale on GOG, I picked up the UFO: After_____ series. I'm currently playing Afterlight and enjoying it.
I vaguely remember playing the first one when it came out (Aftermath?) and being pretty disappointed. But after hearing about the planned changes in XCom EU, and with a X-Com UFO playthrough fresh in my mind, I have a fresh perspective on things. A limited number of soldiers isn't as restricting as I first thought, nor is the one base system. It's like a little stepping stone between between old X-Com and new XCom.
I'll probably move on to UFO: Extraterrestrials next. I had previously avoided it(even though I bought it on Steam) because I thought it was linked to the After series.
Frozen Sunapse? I say yay!
Not to speak of it's awesome soundtrack which I can listen happily standalone and I enjoy it a lot.
Speaking of what to do while X-COM is not released: play CiV and got plenty things to work.

Agreed. I was skeptical about the removal of stats and fast regen skill resources, but with the way skills synergize with each other and items, it works pretty well. Kinda devious really. They take most of the specialization out of the character, and put it into the loot system. Then they make a real money auction house where they take a small cut of each transaction.
All in all, minus the occasional lag or server maintenance, it feels like I'm playing some good ole clicky-clicky Diablo, though.
Hunters2 on the iPhone - though it's probably better on the iPad.
Not feeling Diablo 3 at all. I've played maybe 4 hours or so of it since it released and it's just boring the hell out of me. Played the Torchlight 2 beta today though, and had a tonne of fun. Pre-ordered it, despite the fact that Diablo 3 made me feel kind of like I'd grown out of the genre.
