To buy or not to buy

I was thinking about this the other day.

Here's the scenario: lets say the reviews of G&K come out and they're terrible.

Would that have any effect on your decision to buy the expansion?

To start things off and after careful deliberation, I chose the first selection but it was close race between the third option.

PS: In the interest of inclusion, I'm ok with all forum members voting in this poll not just those with senior or greater rankings as I have requested in my previous polls....

I see that after 1 vote that most people have chosen the first option. Keep voting!

I'd buy it. I love Civ 5 and it's only $30. If I don't appreciate the new features I can always go back to the original version but at least I won't have to worry about what G&K would have been like.

I think if people are on this forum 18 months after Civ 5 came out, they're excited about the expansion and will buy it no matter what. In fact, I imagine most people on this forum will pre-order it.

I don't get the one guy (at this moment) that voted that they were never going to buy the expansion, or that they really hate Civ 5... find something other to do then, why do you have to be a malcontent?

I'm pretty sure the current results of this poll are going to please the guys over at 2K, but I don't think that's in the fans' best interest. We should demand excellence and refuse to pay for anything other than that. Of course, everyone here is essentially a Civ fanboy, so this poll isn't reflective of the general market.

I'd probably buy it. If it got bad reviews, it would depend on whether I buy Diablo III or not. Might not, though.

If the reviews are truly horrible - not THEIR opinion, but MY opinion based on the features and drawbacks described - then I won't buy it.

    I'm not a sheep, I don't follow blindly.

OTOH, the expansion doesn't have to be "bliss in digital form", eitehr. Some flaws are to be expected; as long as the benefits outweigh those drawbacks, I'll buy it.

You should have a fourth option that says "Most probably buy it." because "Buy it no matter what" sounds like you'll buy it even if it's completely rubbish...And I'm thinking it'll be pretty good by the way.

I'm really excited by the expansion, and definitely going to buy it. The hell with the reviews. G&K can't be worse then civ V, even if they wouldn't improve the diplo AI, the combat it still will be a better more complex game, due to the religion, espionage.

But from what I've read and heard civ V G&K will change and improve many aspects of the game, including diplo and combat AI, combat(both terrestrial and naval), city states, and adds many new interesting civs and features, so it can't be bad, nor worse then the current game.

For me Civ V gets really repetitive especially in late game, there isn't anything exciting happening, but I'm sure with the expansion and all the new features and improved AI and diplo will be much more enjoyable and exciting. And the fact the AI declares war on you if you settle near it, or if you try to win as it, it's annoying, but except these it's a good game nonetheless. After listening to the pax interview I'm happy that they've removed the annoying AI problems, and improved it.

It's the fact that you can't pre-order it yet (Steam page isn't up yet), otherwise I would have.

I'm really excited, and I've loved civ V so far (have been putting many hundred hours in it). I've got a very good feeling about the expansion and am really looking forward to it

    Edit:
But must be said, I'll buy anything no matter what, all DLC up until now and all future DLC I'll buy immediately

I'll buy it because I really don't have anything else to be saving up for. Perhaps some old Xbox games but other than that. To be quite honest I doubt this thing will get horrible reviews. What the heck could make a DLC so god awful. Don't answer that. If the issue is with the DLC I'll buy it, if the DLC makes the game worse I won't

After viewing the PAX demo vid, I really don't feel that the expansion will be a bust. It looks like they've thought things out well and there are no parts of the expansion that seem like bad additions. With the 10 minute peek we've gotten it seems smoothly implemented.

Of course, if they Zulu's are not the last Civ it's automatically a bust!

I find it fascinating that a majority of people (including me) have voted that they would buy the expansion even if it was terrible.
I can't think of one other game franchise where people would flock to buy an expansion that was terrible.

Although, I do know that reviews aren't everything but they do typically give a general idea of the quality of a game.

I hope Firaxis appreciates the rabid devotion of the fan base. I actually think they do, very much.

I'm definitely going to ask on the boards if my main concerns with MP were fixed with the expansion (MP AI, notifications, stability etc.) before purchasing. I'm not necessarily going to trust reviews as all the Civ V reviews failed to mention MP at all.

It's not that I don't think the new features are great and I really want to play with them. It's just, I primarily like to play Civ MP and if the MP game is still not working right, my money and time are probably best spent elsewhere. :/

I'm most likely going take a wait and see approach. Reviews may play a small role in influencing my decision, but in no way will be the final deciding factor. I learned my lesson when I pre-ordered CivV, just look back to the launch with all the glowing previews/reviews it received that glossed over or out right ignored all the shortcomings of the title.

I do hope the expansion is everything its claimed to be, its been close to a year since Ive played a serious game of CivV and would very much like a reason to fire it up again.

Blizzard could make ☺☺☺☺ on a stick and actually call it ☺☺☺☺ on a Stick and so long as it was a Star Craft expo people would buy it in the millions

Clearly you aren't familiar with the CoD franchise and its fanbois, are you?

I'd almost bet money on who the one person is that said they'd never buy it no matter what...

Oh yeah, buying it no matter what, though I don't see how this game would get horrible reviews without 2k releasing an entirely different game or something.

I suspected there were other franchises where the fans were as rabid but I don't really play SC or CoD so I'm not really plugged into the community like I am here.

I know Blizzard seems like a pretty good company which seems to value it's player base. I can't speak as to how Infinity Ward treats their players. If they're smart, they will treat that fanbase like gold because those are for sure sales and it's incredibly tough to build up that kind of loyalty.

The makers of the Civ games seem to always recognize how lucky they are to have such an active dedicated bunch of fans who love everything Civ. So far, they haven't really done anything to alienate us. Sure they've made some unpopular decisions regarding the game but they've never done anything to give the community the middle finger; hence, the loyalty we have to the game.

I will buy it on the day of release. I am a huge civ fan; also, I enjoy modding, so the expansion pack will give me more modding options which I feel that I cannot miss out on.

    I'm pre-ordering it.

Call this successful marketing if you like, but I've seen so much evidence of stuff that I've wanted in the game since release being added, and being added well, that if a reviewer told me the expansion was horrible, I'm not sure I'd even believe them.

I'll pretty much buy it no matter what, along with any DLC that interests me.

It's highly unlikely that it will be "terrible". Mediocre (ratings of 70ish%)? Perhaps... But from what I've seen and read, the game looks pretty promising.

Regardless, it doesn't really matter to me because:

    1) It's Civ!! My all time favorite game franchise.

    2) It's a mere 30 bucks. For the amount of content we're getting for it, it's pretty valuable. Even if it's not great, I'm sure I'll play it enough no matter what to get my money's worth (especially when comparing it to other activities or forms of entertainment).

    3) Whatever I don't like or if something doesn't work, I'll just mod it! Plus, the expo will add a whole bunch of new goodies to the code to tinker with and tweak.

    4) Firaxis will continue to support/fix it. If it has performance issues or the gameplay isn't as fun/balanced, Firaxis will release patches. Their track record with all the Civs proves this. They're not like Ubi/Blackhole and that horrible application they call Heroes 6 :*( (such a shame...)
