Is that about 10pm tonight? I will be around and sure send me a message and we'll play! If it's much later I'm not sure as it will be getting to midnight for me. We are on British summertime at the moment. CST is central I presume?

I just kicked things off with cwis.

    Gm1 I chose Russia
We settle 4 tiles away as our settlers ran into eachother. We both start slow, he gets 100g 4 turns earlier. I end up getting knights and taking out France while I built legions. I saw he had 2 LAs so I let the get just out of range and attack his city with my 3 LAs and AA. He concedes.

    Gm2 He chose India
Well he gets 7c in the 3000s and takes 3caps pretty fast. I make a valiant attempt by flpping USA as soon as his Infl HA took it and expanding out but he got massive cat armies too quickly....GG

I got my games in with deni3d.

my host so he picks spain. he gets 2 barbs. one for science and 2nd one down by me for money after killing my warrior with a horse. I take china cap with a wa 2 squares from me. he brings a vet horse army to me and the turn he gets close to me a gets AW for GP and switches to fundy and wins the 13.5-15 to take the china cap from me but i bring out a legion army and destroy his horse army but he still had a warrior in the cap, by the time i healed enough to attack again he had a fully fortified aa in cap that i couldn't kill. he finds aoc and i throw my legions on a boat and set sail for the other ai which was zulu. just as i get close he declares war on zulu with a 2nd vet horse army. he attacks cap and wins but gets injured but doesnt see my la and i destroy his ha. he gets ge for 1st gp and uses it for 50g at 1500 (he still doesn't have his 100g due to it was all spent on horses.) I spend like 7 turns trying to take zulu cap with my la but it kept getting double injured and it became not worth it and threatened it for 25g. deni3d builds a barracks in china cap and brings out an archer and wins the 2-2 legion vs archer for vet. he throws 2 more archers out and armies for a 21 defense while he hammers out legions. he attacks but thinks he's gonna loose and retreats giving me a vet aa. I get gb for EIC. I tech cats and build an army while selling my tech to zulu and germany. he uses his gs on math and tries to attack but looses and then again with a la and aa but my forces prevailed and i cleaned up the remaining forces and took china and he quit.

2nd game china mirror match. i settle with 3 water and 3 trees 2 turns in. he walks for 5 turns then quits saying he was on a long penninsula and he found me. i played a bit longer, he was no where near me. he was close to germany cap

    2-0 me

I walked right past you in China game with no trees... I like how you forgot to mention you won every galleon battle and 22.5-17, 6-6 with your legion army which also wouldn't have even happened if I didn't get pulled to the ice caps. I would've marched in your cap with my march HA but thats civ GG

I didn't mention the 2 galleon battles because they were not important it would not have changed the outcome of the game either way and as for china game i doubt you walked past me unless you started right next to rome. I started on a peninsula and had to walk a turn and a half east. Rome was 12 tiles south. I found your settlers 18 tiles to the west from my cap which u quit in 5 turns it is not possible to move that far in so few of turns. I found a long peninsula far to the east which would have meant u walked west but it was the other side of the map

Actually I was on the peninsula to the North of you so yes I did. Yes those battles did matter because I would've gotten I vet Galleon fleet before you so they were very important...

Got my games in against Remo.
My coloss Egypt beat his Egypt. Protectet my desert and went away in teck. Not much he could do.

His Mongol(had the whole map) beat my South pole Mongol. Not much I could do after he killed my ha which took forever to get out. Got one barb in that game.

Got my 2 games vs. Prey for me in.

1st game: I hosted, he chose Egyptians (surprise!)
He settled first after 3 urns and got Colossus. I settled a turn later in a non-desert spot and got HGB. I walked in on 3 pop Delhi at 3300BC (cattle) and took 3 pop Berlin later with my HA. Took a little though since I wanted to get 100g first. So my start was actually pretty good. Problem was, his start was insane! While I got the 2 caps, he got Colossus (as mentioned before), 7 cities, the KT for a canon, took down the Mongols (cap plus 1 or 2 barb cities), GB'ed EITC, flipped one of my cities with a GA, found Atlantis and GS'ed tanks in the end, when I was about to get invention ... LOL I expanded all I could w/ no further access to gold, but decent land. But it was moot. I would have won pretty much any other game, but this one. Way too much going in his favor. And I did not even mention the trading of upsets when he moved his vet cat army out and I lost both my horse armies to 9 vs. 6 battles, while he in exchange lost his cat army to my vet archer army ... Would have been able to cause some distraction at Thebes if I had been able to clear off his desert archers.
    Prey wins.

2nd game I chose the Mongols:
Prey settled pretty early (turn 2 or so). I walked from the south of the map across crap land to find the U.S.A borders 2 turns in. Problem was there was no place to settle. So I walked past them, around a barb hut and settled for settling on a hill w/ 2 trees after picking up a friendly that showed me SoC nearby. That was around 3300BC or so. The barb that I walked around was 3 flags and instead of attacking my warrior across a river, it moved the dude out into one of my forests :-( So I had to move the warrior back in since I would not take the 1 vs. 1 and lost one hammer of production ... Next turn I walk out again to walk around the river and same thing again, barb hut sends extra flag into my forest :-/ This time I had warrior 2 ready.

While all this barb stuff is going on, prey moves one warrior into my other forest and has one 2 tiles away. I take the 1.5 vs. 1.5 from a hill and win (would have had the 2nd warrior ready to clean up). He tries to sneak his other warrior around, but I take that one out too for March. So now all I have is a march WA, a vet warrior that took down that annoying barb and a non-vet warrior. I noticed that he had HBR, so I was waiting for the attack on the hill. A few turns later he moved his HA over, past my warrior in trees onto desert and I kill his non-vet HA with my WA from the hill. That was pretty much it. Prey decided to hang around, but I eventually took down Washington with my now 2 WAs and got 7cities for GE and GA. He managed to put up an AA in his cap, but I then got AW too, on the way to this cap via galley and he called it. The Zulu were right next to him, so I do not know why prey did not go for them instead of me. REM018 wins.

Btw, I would like to propose to exclude Egypt from any future mirror match themes since it never really is a mirror match.

Well, as u actually said u had a good start with Egypt. I only had 4 tech tiles in Thebes. I'm not 100% sure that everyone had won that game even with coloss. I played it out "my old style" way. I've learned to secure my desert against u. U are a sneaky devil:-)

If I went the HA way like many do , i'm not sure that game would be mine.

I don't think anyone in here could have won my Mongol game from that starting position, so it evens out.

If u had gone the agressive route in the Egypt game, you probably would have lost. 4 tech tiles is plenty and 7 cities allowed you you to build a library and barracks in no time, not wasting turns on gold or production. And w/o the KT canon you would not have taken down the Mongols. Still impressive teching, but the turtle style was the right call here. Colossus plus 7 cities beats any good start I can have, unless I find you before you can get defenses or counters up.

I don't agree w/ you on the Mongols game. You actually managed to build a HA and settled way before me. I only had warriors and no idea that you were close to the Zulu or that the Zulu were even there. I do not know why you did not attack them instead of me. You must have known that I had a warrior army waiting there on the hill after our warrior battles. With Mongols it is crucial to get an AI cap. Why even go for horses? You probably could have taken the Zulu with warriors. I had a horrible start, walking for a long time just to be harassed by a 4 pop barb :-) You walking your precious HA right into my WA sealed the game for me. Otherwise I would have been in a lot of trouble. If you had just walked your HA the other way around the mountains and taken my barb city and attacked Washington, there would not have been anything I could have done other than build warriors to no end :-)

Egypt is the most random civ in the game and mirror matches are supposed to limit the randomness by creating an even civ starting ground. Of course there is always map luck that will make most starts uneven, but choosing Egypt for a mirror kinda takes the whole point of a mirror match out of the equation.

Could og course have played my Mongold different , but didn't know u had march. Don't think I could won that game anyway. Walked 2 or three turns befor settling. got the one barb and spotted ur border. Knew I had to pass u to get anywhere.

If u tecked instead of making archers and HA in the Egypt game u could still have a chance I think. HGB is pretty good and u had 2 cities early. A library there and u may had beaten me to COL.

We never know. GG's anyway. Ur a really good player

Where to settle is important with Egypt.

It is different, since that kind of luck is Egypt-only. No other civ has that added randomness. And by having 2 Egpytians face off, you are bound to have an uneven start no matter what. The only wonder combo that is somewhat fair is HGB vs. Oracle. The rest is lopsided.

By picking Egpyt for a mirror match, you are basically saying "I am willing to gamble without seeing my cards". Can workout, can backfire, you don't know. But it creates a mismatch in almost any case.

IMO, it just adds an unnecessary unbalance to a mirror match.

Well..Most matches are mismatches . In the 8 man tourny I went 7-1 against Duke and Maw. I don't see myself as a better player then them, not even close to them.

I would give myself a 25 % chance of winning that Egypt game if we switched the start. I would have played hgb different than u did. And you would prob play the colloss different.

Be happy, u got a point:-)

What if Stonehenge faces CoR and a few turns later Stonehenge guy get 7cog and AW? Who is the favorite then? Does someone who gets CoR against Stonehenge have an advantage? Yes. Does that really determine who will have the better start? Not even close... Again referring to how much of this game is luck...

I agree with REM here, there's not a lot we can do about the maps in a mirror match, but with Egypt it's a gamble between what's almost an upper tier civ against a bottom tier. We wouldn't play Arabs v France thinking it was balanced.
