(June 19)
Thanks for the news Greg
22 June for me![]()
Haha, late spring. Very.![]()
10 weeks, start the countdowns!
Now how bout that patch![]()
I'm glad its on the later side, gives me over a month to get burned out of D3
Exciting days ahead! Can't wait for both of these.![]()
I can not wait for the reviews from the gang. Depending on those evaluations I may look to buy it in late winter-- if it takes care of most of the issues we have all talked about, and has no major issues on it's own.
To the point---- did K2 do it right this time? I hope so.
June, yeah -- that was kind of expected. Ok, super! Can't wait for all the details we'll be getting at PAX.
Yeah, you're right my initial projection was wrong. After Diablo 3 was announced, I started to wonder if they'd wait til June. Even well after, I still wouldn't have guessed it to be this late, though, you're right. It's not a big surprise, though.
I think the D3 release, given it's 10 years of anticipated build-up, probably played a big role in this. Although the games are in completely different genre's, enough of us played D2 to give D3 a whirl. (side note - I personally never played any Diablo)
I don't blame ya though. I think they are doing the game right by polishing and fine-tuning this one. The amount of re-balancing has to be unreal.
Officially, late spring.
Well played, sir!
Damn. I'm not usually one to bite the hand that feeds, Greg, but June 19th is not "late spring" by anyone's standards, not even on the fiscal calendar. Why not just say "Coming this summer"? Scotty from Star Trek had it right...always tell the captain LONGER than the repairs are going to take, and then when you get it done in half the time, you look like a "miracle worker".
Only in a very obscure, very technical sense - relying on an astronomical phenomenon which the general public no longer understands, nor cares about. Generally speaking, "June is the start of summer"; most people perceive all of June to be Summer, not Spring.
So while 2K is still technically correct, I can agree that putting it off until June, and not admitting "sorry folks, we have to delay it to early summer" does leave a sour taste in one's mouth.
There is nothing obscure about it. I think just about everybody (at least on the Northern hemisphere) knows that June 21 is the longest day of the year. You can try to claim that most people perceive all of June to be summer, but you'd be hard pressed to actually back up that claim with actual proof. And even if you did you'd still be a pedantic ass.
I'm not trying to be rude or start anything here but why would any game developer use "general" terms and not "technical" terms when releasing information? I would think all that would do is leave more things "up in the air" for people to decipher themselves, which generally probably isn't a good idea when dealing with a very large mass of people like this, and leave more room for said people to get upset when their thoughts didn't match up with the technical side of things.
Going from a "technical" standpoint where things have a clear and concise definition would leave no room, or very little, for people to interpret things in their own manner and leave less room for people getting upset when "their ideas" don't come to fruition.
Just my 2¢ from someone that has worked with serving the public for the last 25-30 years.
I will admit, 2 days before Summer is not leaving a lot of room for things to go wrong and still make the "late-spring" deadline. So, let's just hope nothing comes up to push it back two more days!!![]()
I think it has to do with the way schools work. Most schools get out for "summer" between June 4th and June 15th. Since we learn this as kids, it's sort of drilled into us. Yeah, it's technically still Spring, but given just how many people were saying May on here, I think it's pretty obvious that people don't view it that way. *shrug* Whatever, I just hope the MP animations patch comes sooner![]()
Any updated ETA info on pitboss and multiplayer unit animations?
180 to 185 days out of 365, is "bizarrely short" ...? It's half of all the days in the year!
And, "bizarrely long school holiday" ...? According to Wikipedia, your schools give ~8 weeks in Summer, plus 2 weeks for easter and 2 weeks for Christmas - 12 weeks total. In the U.S., it's ~10 weeks for Summer, 1 week for Spring, and 1 week for Christmas ... or, the same 12 weeks. We just push more of it into the Summer break than you do.
Plus, a lot of school districts in the U.S. are shortening the Summer break tremendously anyway. I've known friends' kids to not get out of school until nearly the end of June (mid-20's of the month), and then be back in school in mid-August (mid teens of the month), AND still only get 1 week each for spring and winter breaks. Which means, annually, they're only gtting nine weeks of Holiday, less than your schools give. (Personally I think that's a load of crap, and that kids should be allowed to be KIDS for more of the year, but ... eh. I'm not the one making those decisions.)
Since we're on the topic of school years, we have ~8 Weeks at summer / Christmas (Sth. Hemisphere), 2 for Easter, 2 in July and 2 in September / October.
While I'd argue that the release date is Early summer instead, I'm pleased nonetheless that we have a date. Or, are you guys pulling a Star Trek, and doing the last date possible, then when you release earlier we're all happy!
There is no definition of Summer, either meteorological or colloquial, in which that season starts on the Summer Solstice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer
That said, glad to have the release date.
You should really read what you post, before posting it:
"The Western definition based on solstice to equinox is more frequently used where a temperature lag of up to half a season is common.[5] In North America, summer is often the period from the summer solstice (usually June 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere) to the autumn equinox."
When it comes to dates, being 'technical' is far more useful than being a pedantic ass (+1 for accuracy). The best way to figure it out is to go find a calendar made in the US (or most anywhere in the northern hemisphere) and you'll see the first day of Summer is rather obviously stated as the summer solstice.
So, for clarity, 'most anyone' would reference a calendar before claiming 'most anyone' don't follow the calendar, when speaking of actual dates.
Yeah, and you know what that quote says" Often ... not always. It doesn't even say "usually". Ergo, implicitly, it acknowledges that it is not the sole definition of when summer starts, nor neccessarily even the majority definition.
Kind of disappointing... I was hoping that it would come out around May 25th, that way I would a whole month to play both a left off for army training... I guess Ill have only 5 days to play then!
Wow....I can't believe that there was an entire page dedicated to the argument over the start of summer. Kinda sad really.
I'm really rather looking forward to this. Hopefully it will fix some of the long-standing issues in diplomacy, game lag and the AI's ability to compete on the battlefield. I have a sneaking suspicion it'll do nothing of the sort, but hey, a man can dream right?
Oh, and 19 June is not late spring, not by a long shot. If you have to get out a calendar to prove it is, well... what can I say? You're doing it wrong.
That said, at least there *is* an expansion that *might* address some of the critical issues Civ 5 is facing. I wasn't even really expecting that. So thanks.
If you go by the calendar, then summer starts on June 20. If I go by my school schedule, then summer starts June 21. So the release is late spring! This time actually works out really well for me, as it falls right before my summer vacation, so I'm happy. Either way, a release date is great news.
So.. if we go by reality, then this is exactly when they said they would release.
But if we go by guttural instincts or what days you might have off school then this is a crime.
/sigh, called it.
And really guys in an ETA what does the "E" stand for?
He gave a guess, NAILED IT, and you are still not pleased.
Allow me to say what you all should be saying:
Thanks Greg.

That's all? We have 280 days, and then what Pouakai said for holidays. Children should be learning for the majority of the year, not on holiday.
So now I have to wait until winter to get G&K. It's a bit further away than I thought, but at least it's a date Greg! And it's close to the holidays as well.
Oh, and if that's the box art, it's quite nice. Just please make Boudicca look something like that ingame!
