Will we need an internet connection to install or play the game?

I would like to know if the buyer is required to connect to the internet to install the game?

Further, if a persist ant connection is required to play?

It is possible but I doubt it. I mean because they are putting it on consoles and are trying to appeal to the masses then they would more likely release the game offline. I just thought of one more thing I already pre-ordered xcom so at least on consoles I am 98% sure that it is offline. With that being said if the game does have co-op or multiplayer or DLC than that will probably be done over the internet.

If 2k games and Firaxis know what they are doing, they will put as little DRM in this game as possible. DRM only serves to piss off legitimate customers with unreasonable and annoying restrictions, such as having no offline mode. In addition, I think that DRM actually INCREASES piracy, due to the fact that pirates now have new customers: People that would have bought the game, but chose to pirate it instead because of the DRM.

Honestly, the best way to stop piracy would be to add some kind of online function, such as a multiplayer option (Co-op or versus). This way, even if people were to pirate this game, they would see that they are missing out on multiplayer and be more tempted to actually buy it.

My guess would be that a connection is required to install it, if you look at the latest CiV titles they have been very Steam oriented, otherwise probably no connectioin required.

My hope is exactly that in fact, buy it on Steam and install it via there.

I guess it doesn't really matter to me, I'm going to support this sucker on console. I'm tired of people thinking console gamers don't want to think or havye anything but Call of Duty (I like CoD, on occasion, they're good at what they are) but I like just about any game out there if it's good.

The only games I don't play are rhythm games, and that's just because I'm downright terrible at them.

At the same time punish people who buy it by making everything more complicated and expensive.

Just a friendly heads up, piracy talk is frowned upon on these forums. It's definitely a valid topic for conversation, but this isn't necessarily the place for it.

it's not like we are saying we will pirate it, i for one will fully support the developers. we are just saying that DRMs encourages piracy

The way things have gone so far with this project I wouldnt put it past them to require a constant internet connection or some dribble like that. Hey how about a physical dongle? Those are always popular. ;P

Like someone else has already mentioned, the last few games that 2K has released have been on Steam and only require you to be online for the initial download and patches. I don't see why they'd change that when Mafia II and Civ V have not seemed to be hurt from the input steam has had.

This is reassuring. I remember that Bioshock had some pretty rediculous DRM (not sure if it has been patched out since). With the minimal DRM in Mafia II and Civ V, I'm glad to see 2k games moving away obtrusive copyright protection. Steam is pretty awesome too. I hope this trend continues.

Well, I don't know what it's using exactly - I don't work for 2K so don't take it as some official statement - but I think all they've been using is Steam. I'm not 100% sure about retail versions though, there may be securom on the disks but I don't remember if that's true or false. I'm fairly certain that Mafia II doesn't though and I would think that Civ V, as it came out after, doesn't either.

Bioshock's DRM got patched out (the Securom activations - it still has a disk check), and Bioshock 2 is the only 2K game that uses GFWL, which by most accounts is pretty not good. And that's all I can remember off of the top of my head. I can see if I can make the search function work better if you guys want some more info on 2K trends in DRM.

CivV just uses Steam. Some people hate it, but I find it the least offensive DRM (I prefer it over disc checks), and there are advantages to it as well.

I actually like Steam, it's very convenient to play and purchase games. Anyone know if XCOM will be distributed through Steam?
