Can interceptor (auxillary) bases be attacked?

We all know by now that you only have one central base where all the main stuff happens. And that you can then have auxillary interceptor bases around the map. But can these get attacked? I mean, how would that work since presumably you have no troops stationed at these bases ??

Or once these bases are up, they are essentially indestructible ?

Since the main base can WILL NOT be attacked, I doubt that others could :S

    Edit : Sorry big mistake

I wondered this too. I would like to see them attacked like terror missions with you sending in your men to help the airfield security forces.

Seeing how it has been confirmed that your base will be attacked (some interviewer asked about it...RPS?) I'm not sure what your point is.

I'm not sure where I read it. From what I remember I think it was not yet in the forecast but they told that if they had the opportunity they would. But nothing certain.
I just hope i'm wrong because it would be a big lack.

Yeah that's true. Base defenses were fun.

But I have doubts because it has nowhere yet been specified above or facilities defense systems. We have only an underground view of the base and we can not see the surface ... :S

It'd be a real shame not to get to fight in the anthill. With all the attention it has been getting, viewing it in battle would be really nice. Fighting aboveground would be basically just like any other mission, not nearly special enough.

Auxiliary bases should get attacked too, but possibly the map wouldn't be determined by how you build it but there are a few preset maps instead.

Also, no chance of destroying your own base from there with too liberal usage of high explosives!

    ---
Speaking of base assault, if they can make main base defense take the base layout from how you built the base, then they've got the framework to do random map generation in the exact same way as it was done in original: out of blocks of premade terrain, 5x5 or 6x6 (plus 4 height levels). They've been pretty clear about not having procedural map generation (just alien/objective/team placement within one) though so I fear base defense couldn't work like that either and you'd play on a map that doesn't represent your actual base?

    /me worries some more.

Brian Damage has been over the limitations of UE3 engine, and he definitely seems to know his stuff. To make base maps reflect your base layout would require prerendering every possible combination of layouts, basically.

They could still have a fight in the top level since that seems pretty much set. Let's face it, once an invader is in your barracks and trashing your laboratories you are probably screwed anyways. Most of my base defense was about throwing as much fire into the hangars and access lift as possible. So while generating the whole base would be much cooler and preferred, I would prefer base defense on the first level or two over no base defense at all.

Really, the ant farm bugs me. A 3d multilevel base would have been far more interesting to me, but a moot point without base attacks. If they do have a static map for the top levels, that would indeed be better than nothing, but eliminating the relevance of base layout for attacks seems like a regression from 18 years ago. Sure, now there's research bonuses and the like for adjacent buildings, and that would have been a welcome addition, but by no means a replacement. Strategic placement of base buildings reflected in tactical battles was just another of X-COMs many charms for me.

They did say something about there being a Base Defense misison but said they are not ready to talk about it. I am betting it's scripted and gives some reason why you only have 6 soldiers defending it.

Ya I remember trying to optimize my base layout (in UFO) in order to create choke points and improve defensibility. Oh well.

Once again tho, I will grow very tired of a static map very quickly. No matter how you vary the spawn points on static maps, they always play out in a similar fashion (take Shogun for example)

The quote in question, if I remember right, basically just said they weren't prepared to talk about it at this time, but heavily hinted that there would be base defenses of some sort.
