    The XCom: Enemy Uknown Motto

So, with all the threads with their serious business of speculating and hypothesizing about how the game is going to be and all the threads beseeching the developers to throw in the sectoid kitchen sink I thought I'd do something a little more fun.

I propose a motto thread for everyone's favorite clandestine xenomorph combat agency. Maybe the developers will peek in an pick one. Some rules:

In order to not play favorites to any one nation I ask that the mottoes be in Latin, because it's a dead language, and because it's cool. Also provide an English translation... well because we want to know what it means, and it seems to be the majority language on the forums.

The point is to come up with a good motto. So have fun.

    Here's mine.

"Primo vigiles opes gladii terris ultima"

"The fist watchmen, the mightiest sword, the last line for Earth"

    "Viridi sanguinem rubrum."

I think this works out as "Green blood for red".

    "In durior advenae maior tormentarii."

Should be "The tougher the alien the bigger the gun.". Surprised to find that Google thinks Latin has a word for gun, but that's cool :P.

    "Manducare calidum naptha aliena bastardus."

This is something close to "Eat hot plasma, alien bastard."

    "Nos morituri nolumus facere."

Discworld inspired, basically "We who are about to die, don't want to."

    Omnis enim vita, mille alienigenis.

Should be something like "For every human life, a thousand aliens."

I really like the mottos, but I think there may already be one.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPMbQ1DVJP4

At :08 or :09 you can see a crest on the armour with a latin saying "Vigilo C??????" Vigilo translated to "Watch" (via Google), but I can't make out the rest. The Geoscape Officer has the same crest on his uniform at :53.

    Any ideas?

    "Vigilo confido" ?
    "confido" -> trust
Simply the baseline, the slogan of the XCOM agency, it means : "trust in us, we take care"

But most of the time it ends up more like: If it bleeds we can kill it.

"Predator" reference ? Love it !
I wish that's typically the question we will ask on Mutons !

Mine will be Ego pugnare cum animo. Manus et tela voluntatis augue, the famous "I fight with my mind. My hands and weapons are extensions of my will"

I created a guild / clan logo with that once. The origin is obvious but it's a genuinely new drawing.

I like the one I put in the original post best, but the first one was serious and the second one was for the lulz.

"Occulta Motus" might be more suitable for X-Com's secretive nature :P

Don't be a spoilsport. So it's no compltelty grammatically correct. There are people who don't even know the proper grammaticals properties of their own language, much less a dead one.

"Occidere alienigenis, converterent ingenio eorum effercio, repetere"

Kill aliens, reverse engineer their stuff, repeat.

Though that's more a mantra than a motto.

"When Earth demands, we pay the price. Victory through sacrifice"

I just don't know how to write this in latin, and I do not trust any on-line translator to do it ok... If they can butcher normal languages in translations, then the latin is even more prone to that

    "Festinatio la vista , infantia"
    = Hasta La Vista, Baby.

    "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate."
= Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. This could be a warning cry to aliens, or a bitter fatalistic one that soldiers make when they think they are about to die.

"EGO have nusquam prebeo tamen cruor , laboro , lacrima quod sudo. Nos have pro nos an ordo of plurrimi gravis pius. Nos have pro nos plures , plures porro mensis of nixor quod of patientia."
= I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.
    - All right, no one in their right mind would adopt this as a motto but it satisfies the respect for history in me.

If there's any errors in the Latin diction, blame Google and Wikipedia. I don't know a single word of Latin!

Had fun with this a month ago but in the new E3 trailer the XCOM moto is confirmed at 0:37 of the E3 trailer to be "Vigilo Confido". Vigilance, Confidence.

Yeah, I figured it out a month ago. I took a look at the same scene in a clearer trailer. I just didn't say anything because the thread was going down in the lists.

I don't remember any of my highschool latin to translate it.. lol

Google translates it to "watch the bold".. add a comma and it becomes "watch, I am confident"

Someone with latin skills will be able to say for certain.. I'm guessing it translates into something like "Bravely Vigilant"

It's Sword of the Stars reference. Literally: Revenge is a [dog]. Your motto is Solforce's official motto. Mine is their unofficial motto. The main lore writer is a latin nut.

Also, I like the above one.

Hrmm... If this Xcom is close to the original's difficulty then I'm going to have to go with "O Deus, O Deus, nos omnes sumus morituri"

Keep in mind, I used google translate, so that's probably not grammatically correct, but it gets the idea across.
