This is the rare instance where Civ Fanatics is more active than this forum. There are some folks over there requesting tips. I started by thinking about the topics I would suggest reading to get a well rounded feel for the game. I then decided to go through and see how many of them I could find.

first link is interesting to see usage numbers. GammaZ's list of recommendations towards the end is a good summary of where to start if the devs get funded to try and retool the game for a second shot.

If you are not a fan of the 2k games forum and prefer FB based CivWorld pages for hints and advice on how to play, request membership to the FB page Civ Tavern and/or the FB group Civ World Hints & Tips. Both include detailed documents from some of the best players in the game on the basics of the game and more complex strategies they have developed. Additionally Civ Tavern is a good place for players to meet other players also hopelessly addicted to this game. Membership to either group is not exclusive. Recent recommendations on how best to develop new players has led to a spike in documents by the best players to help developing players improve their game through these two FB pages.
