Wasteland 2 - it only took a quarter century...

Brian Fargo has "got the band back together".

He got the licence to Wasteland 2 from EA.

The project has hit the minimum funding point of 900 grand... after 42 hours out of 30some days.

    In short - it's a go.

There will be a Wasteland 2, about 25 years after the release of the original!
Additional funds never hurt, though, and all of it is going towards more content, more platforms, more... Wasteland.

    The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter project.

The reward slots have very recently been increased so if you pledge enough, you can again have a statue of yourself or a shrine erected in the Wasteland.
    Immortality can be yours!

Oh, and even without giving them your lunch money, the project video alone is worth watching. =P

I played the original Wasteland when it was new. On my Commodore 128 (in C64 mode). If I remember correctly it was 5 single sides of 5¼" disks. So 2 full disks plus one side of another. I honestly don't remember many of the details now but I do remember it being an awesome game. Awesome enough that when Wasteland 2 is released in 18 months or so that I WILL be buying it!

One portrait of Benjamin Franklin, coming right up!!

    ...

Like headkase, I played the original - except I had an actual Commodore 64 to play it on. And yes, Headkase, five or six single-sided 5.75" disks fits my memory too.

I remember using a trick where you used more than one copy of the disks, to be able to re-loot entire maps over and over. That monastery with all the energy-weapon toting monks, for example. First time I survived killing them all off, without having looted any of them? I walked off the map, saving it's status to one disk ... then walked back in.

Vacuum up all the guns, armor, and ammo ... swap to a different copy of that disk, exit .... then swap back to the FIRST copy, the one that had the monks all dead but the loot still on the ground ... lather, rinse, repeat.

    ^_^ Good times, good times.

Ah, but you had to be really careful about which version of alternate reality to saved to which disk. I remember how I once messed up and overwrote a particularly juicy cache. =P

It still doesn't feel fully "real". A Wasteland 2. Madness!

I wrote "FREE LOOT" on the copy I wanted to load from, when getting that loot.

An interesting factoid is that Fallout - the first one - is Wasteland's "spiritual successor." That get's a mention in the overview on Wikipedia. Basically, Electronic Arts held the rights to the "Wasteland" name so it couldn't be used, so, enter "Fallout"!

I was too young to have played Wasteland, but I have played Fallout 1&2 back in the day. And that's where my expectations for this game lies--isometric, turn-based, post-apoc, sandboxy gameplay. And thus, I've backed this kickstarter just right after it launched. Hope to god, it'll be good.

Be aware, Fluvie: Wasteland was even more tongue-in-cheek than Fallout. I expect the same of WL2 (though Iw on't rage at Brian Fargo if he tones it down a tad).

OTOH, it would be interesting to see WasteLand go the new-Fallout route, and be a first-person visit to Wasteland's quirky post-apocalypse ...

I don't mind that. When I think back on what made Fallout 3 seem off to me, I realize that I just really hate the battle system for that game. I can remember being so excited about it back when it was released that I even got the collector's edition for it in retail. Then I tried playing it and I couldn't even get myself to play past the Vault. Bethesda games just have ☺☺☺☺ty battle systems and it crept into my Fallout and I just couldn't get into the game.

Brian Fargo already said that the game will be from a top down perspective and turn based as well. Which hopefully means that the battle system will be similar to Fallout 1&2&Tactics:BoS. And that's really all I want--a new game in the same vein as those games. The tongue-in-cheek concern's very minor to me.
