Haven't even heard it insinuated. Though, now that you mention it, that would be cool. Especially if they implimented some sort of feature that allows you to put those maps into the "map pool" and share them out. That would help the developers out by allowing the players themselves to increase the pool which lowers the chance of repeating maps even lower.
Anyway, I kind of doubt it (at least right away). But if they at least release some sort of map editor shortly after, that would be cool.

My favorite solution to no random maps is give us "random maps + custom maps"!
If they can release a tool as powerful as the Skyrim Creation Kit, then I am pretty sure Firaxis can come up with a map creator/compiler. The only trick would be to have the game code be flexible enough to 'see' all the maps in a particular folder when choosing a random map example 'medium city map' (Combat Mission Normandy already does this on the fly with custom maps, so its not hard).

Uh, sort of. Solomon appears to want to release the game scripts (presumably meaning unpacked and unencrypted) so people can alter the game as they please, but he won't commit to having them available at launch. I personally suspect there's some kind of deal has to be made with Epic, as well as possibly providing a built-in override system if the engine doesn't do this by default.
Well, the key point is that the game has the ability to load user-created scripts. (and most certainly content)
Without access to scripts, you cannot create any new features.
With most games being "hardcoded" this isn't even an option so the best you can do there is to modify the content, like the damage values of a laser rifle or graphics.
It's UE3, so likely a lot (possibly even the majority) of the mechanics are going to be scriptside rather than hard coded. Sure, you could have the ability to load addon scripts through some sort of generic interface, but a far more appealing idea is the one mentioned in the interviews - allowing the users to mod the core game scripting, Elder Scrolls style. The benefit with the UE3 is that you could potentially even alter entire gameplay mechanics this way, not just add guns and stuff.
...which just happens to be the only kind of modding I personally care about.
I don't want to "create" another rifle that eventually is well... another rifle. If it doesn't do anything new and interesting - don't care.
There could be rocket rifles with homing bullets, deployable offensive and defensive turrets (like a portable mini-Phalanx to intercept incoming rockets), deployable drones for a tech soldier class, on and off map artillery, flashlights (totally cool! They let you see when it's dark!), a gun that shoots heat-seeking exploding pink bunny robots, crew served weapons that limit the carrying capacity of two soldiers, area-denial weapons like mine or banana peel launchers... and that's just scratching the surface!
Quite. Meanwhile I'm somewhat reassured to know we'll probably eventually be able to play a mechanically retooled version of the game with more of the classic features.

When it's told that there will be "70 unique missions" What it means ?
70 missions scripted for the concil/diplomatie ?
There'll be autogenerated missions like the original ? or we still don't know.
AI modding would be really interesting, and always preferable to modding the aliens to be stronger via weapons, armour or health.

Doubt that this is the number of maps. There's supposedly an "obscene" amount of maps. 70 would be kinky at best.
It's definitely not 70 mission types. I'm guessing 6-10 for generic missions.
I think one of the most exciting things about this game is that they are going to allow you to mod the game and actually help you do it up to a point.
The pc gaming community has for as long as i have known have helped support games and extend the longivity of a games life.
The fact that this is a xcom game - there is a massive fanbase out there and i have lost count of the number of projects that have tried reinventing this game from the original xcom enemy unknown.
You just know that no matter how this new game does - someone will mod this new game so it runs very close the original and try to mimic its every move and someone will succeed - that can only be a good thing for everyone concerned.
