my french beat coolhands greeks
i think i played this one well. i realised he was on a peninsular so i just shut down his ability to get off it then did my thing elsewhere on the map. bad luck for him.
My Germans beat coolhands mongols
He couldn't find any gold or a decent spot to settle so he quit at like 2500 or something.
Just have dukeblue left now... If I win 1 me and Maw will be tied for 1st...
Think we will have to wait for a while for dan and duke since I'm pretty sure they will be the last ones to finish...
Still trying to get game with Dan but he constantly in the middle of something somehow. This is getting boring...
got one in vs forum
my spanish beat his romans
we started close. i walked and met his city with m settler. we both seemed to have no gold so i walked away from him. I met the japanese and took their cap. tbhen we had some warrior wars. I slowly killed his units and the natural bonuises of spain (eg navigation) started to show through. getting SoC didnt hurt.
second game was looking like a good one, my germans vs his russians.
I got a cap forst and CoL and Lit and so forth first but he had more gold than me and better map position. he also won a button race on a key barb due to stupid barbs talking to me
but just as forum was saving up a Gb for EITC in a couple of turns and I was about to pop monarchy and engineering (id banked beakers in engineering) then it went "waiting for forum" then as I went to send a mesage to him.. it crashed my xbox. I restarted and i guess forum left the game too because looking at his status it said he wasnt in it anymore (otherwise we could have tried a reinvite as much as that might have hurt the one being reinvited).
this raises a tough question for me. clearly I have a bad connection here ( you guys who played me lately and we couldnt connect or we got that stupid dumping thing will know what i mean) so I imagine that the freeze is probably on my end.... well that and I know my xbox got taken out by the freeze... (couldn't even finish typing my message)...
MultiPlayaBeast vs Coolhandlewke
First Game: Multi=Zulu and Cool=Romans
I knew the map as soon as it started... either Cool was on the island start or far south of me. I took out Americans and got to republic in ancient. We had met but nothing really ensued until I took one of his cities. I took the same city two times even knowing there was a WA next to it but I did it to pick with him and hopefully get CoL but never got it from him. Cool takes out Spanish but not sure if he got Navi. I had 8 cities after going into medieval and pretty much after sometime gone by... Cool calls it.
MultiPlayaBeast wins!
Game 2: Multi=Romans and Cool=Japanese
I didn't settle until 3400 bc but landed next to French. I take them out and get pottery. I then take out a Mongol city but then catch notice of warrior from Cool. Behind it was a HA. I didn't prepare for that. I knew the map too but I just didn't spend my gold right and got laxed with what I had done so far. I tried trapping the HA in spots to kill it but all was in vain as Cool played it smart. He put me in a position eventually that I was on the defensive. Cool takes a Mongol city that pretty much had me backed against the wall as anything could have come out of it. I was wanting to see the HA go into it at some point so I could convert the HA but it never happened.
Few turns later, Cool finds 7cog. That pretty much put the game deep in his hands as I couldn't see what he was doing on his side plus I was low on gold. I do the best I can and plant 5 cities with no defense the rest of the game. I didn't want to take the chance of him taking multiple cities he come over from behind me. Cool kept tech lead for the whole game. Cool steals gb from Mongols and builds Sam Castle. I think I see a Knight rush coming but it never happens. Then after I convert the Mongol city he took earlier, kill HA with LA and such... He gb's EIC. I found AW early but there was really no use for it in the position I was in. I had a boat in the opposite direction of where I would sneak something but I never tried to do anything more from there. I had a CA on a galley eventually but it was destroyed but a strong galley with 3 attack. I knew for a while it was over... I quit eventually.
Coolhandlewke Wins!
i do think the rules should allow for a 5-10min waiting time in such cases as it is a gentlemens game, but also i have the same connection as you do scottie and i know ours sux, compared 2 when i lived in england which is not the best but twice as goood as new zealand(from ma point o view) guess thats a rematch regardless, as forum may have thought it was him that had the freeze and left...quite possible you both were hard frozen?
If Grizz wins both of his and I lose both of mine we will all be 7-7 interesting...
Just noticed, have to say one more thing before I go...
500! Now, I must never post again...![]()
Dan - what time tonight?
you failed to mention i was ready for you in the 2 hours before you posted this but you were in a good ffa. then when you wanted to start i knew dinner was less than an hour away. got to be more chilly in the future, i go at my own pace but have never held a tourney up past the point of decency.
duke, i am very flexible between now and 6 pm pst, then again starting at around 9:30.
should have kept my results posted as i went yesterday. let me know if i get something wrong.
my spain loses to prey's arabs. horrible waste of a good start. get a vet WA early and overrun a barb right in front of prey. he's on the other side of a peninsula with a galley and non vet WA. for some dumb reason i assume he will bring the WA around on the galley. i take my WA the wrong direction, killing his militia and then having to heal twice. i have a vet HA steaming south to the mongols when his WA walks up on my empty cap.
mongols lost to denied's germans. walked 15 turns without a scrap of gold or good spot. his warrior stalked me for the last 6 or so, so settling without gold wouldn't work.
greeks lose to scottie's french. settled a turn off the end of a peninsula. when i finally got a horse out of it his horse immediatly killed it. by the time i got back with the HA he was camping a hill, essentially pinning me in. meanwhile he took 2 ai civs.
my rome vs multi's zulu. i was pinned on a pretty good sized area with a hilly land bridge. sent a WA north and didn't discover spain a few squares south until too late. when i finally took them i got pottery. multi got 7 cities. i knew with that, the whole world, and republic, i was toast.
my japan vs multi's rome. settled with 2 forest plus whale and fish. everything played out like he posted. i was shown 7 cities way north and had to rush a settler to send up there, then hammer a galley. didn't have too many good mainland spots but good islands were all over off my southern coast. i was going to go for an ancient LA rush but seeing the gb in karokorum changed my approach. i teched thru to gold, got the free spy, and had the galley waiting to send her on the mission. after popping eitc with my own gb i was doing 200 science, getting techs like religion/engineering/banking in one turn. KA's were coming, but i was going to be able to deliver them quicker on cruisers.
standings updated. please check to make sure all games are recorded accurately. the crashed game needs to be replayed. being ahead of gemany in tech isn't decisive unless you take out the horde of KA's 1st.
2 games with duke, 2 pathetic losses.
1st my england vs rome. i settle with dye/forest and 60 gold. that was as good as it got. he must have got the gw in the 1st 5 turns or so. duke + gw + republic = game over before it starts.
next my arabs vs his greeks. this game could have been great, but instead was a ball punch. i settle next to a barb with 10 gold. it gives me alpha and shows me england very close. send out 3 warriors but england steals a barb. i get a van, and 20 g from their van. i sell alpha for 35 gold. pretty sweet huh, 100g and juicy england. except my 6 attack WA gets double wounded vs his 2 defense. then i F up and they tech bw before i attack again. with monarchy it would have been huge. i find duke but he's laid numerous traps keeping me from getting safely to him. i galley to berlin, but lose my WA 9-4. i eventually get it and then grab the ark and 7 cities. should be easy but he gets CA defense quickly. i move 2 vet AA's, a vet CA, and inf HA to a hill next to his 2nd city. i should have ran the clock but i hate playing that way. he forms a 2nd CA and beats my AA's 18-12. i attack his pike with the HA and lose 13.5-10. i save the CA but lose all the rest. he starts cranking in tech and its taking me forever to get a galleon. i use a gs on feud and try to mount a back door attack. i should have focused on this from the start. my other 2 gp's were a ge and ga that i couldn't use (unless i wanted an empty city with cat neighbors). i sent a KA, CA, and inf HA to bejjing. taking it i only needed athens for the win. i formed as fleet and sent them in. i landed late and he immediatly killed my AA 18-16 or something. i then attacked and lost 4 battles that all had close odds. i eventually killed his PA but it was too late. he had many more single pikes and cats but if i win that archer battle i might have stood a chance. he had a cruiser fleet and had used a gs for corp. i knew it was now or never for taking athens. if i had made that move much earlier by boat instead of going at his choke it probably goes differently.
2 games vs itz denied
My Spanish beat his India in a quick lopsided one.
My Germans beat his Spanish in a pretty long, laggy, bloodbath with my elite knights taking all 5 caps.
I lose 2 to Duke.
Indians V.S. Duke Spanish
My horsemen lost to his warrior around 2800. He had a walk in on china at like 3500 I think. So my only hope was to win 2-1.5, I didn't so game over.
Spain V.S. Duke Germans
Had many decisions to make in this game seeing it now I would've done better if I just expanded but I made the right decision at the time to put pressure on him. Settle next to a whale and 3 trees at around 3600. Take a barb that gives me a galley and shows me AW then I start teching HBR.. I am at the very North of the map, Mongols are there as well. I have no gold, I switch to fundy and sell my galley. I go searching for some barbs or friendlies but there are none to be found. My warrior is scouting then I see he is building Horsemen as well. I take out his wounded horsemen that is going for the 2nd barb (I found 3 the whole game) then next turn he takes out mine with a wounded march HA. I have another horsemen behind him and I take out his HA 3-2.25. Next turn I take barb and get 40g which shows me another barb 3 turns away. I take it and get horse to vet and get 50 gold. I am making horsemen painfully slow out of Madrid and then it is a long walk to any of his cities after I make it. Finally like 10 turns later I make a Vet Ha and go looking for some other cities he had. Berlin is at an awesome choke point so there is no way I will be taking it. I go around with my HA. I should of waited until the end of turn but like dan I hate doing that but apparently that is what you have to do if you want to win... I walk next to empty Kyoto that Duke took from Japs. Sweet walk in here I come! No, he has enough time to sell a bunch of units and build a road and attack 4.5 to 4.5 and win. If I would've waited I would've won since he barely got that road the last few seconds of turn. I move 2 single horsemen into position waiting to take Kyoto, he left it empty again. Next turn I walk in and take it leave my second horse behind. He moves a warrior and I attack and kill it. Then he kills my horse which I expected, but then he moves again! Of course he gets blitz for upgrade! So he takes back Kyoto and I am out of a cap and a lot of gold with nothing to show for it. It was a great map for Spanish if I would've just started expanding from the beginning but that would've given him total control of the mainland which would've been bad. Also he had a nice lake freeway that he could ship units to my side and not have to worry about my Galleons killing him which is how he stole a GB from the Mongols. Got 7cog way late in the game so it didn't help too much. I could've out teched him but he got dom before I could do anything. If he would've come 4-8 turns later I probably could've saved Madrid and won the game but ohh well... GG It was fun
Hopefully coin flips go my way next time
Lost to J-5 with A-A playing poker right before I played you so guess it was going to be another one of those days for me lol

You should have won that Greek game Dan. The civ gods didn't see favor upon you as you should have got some type of karma.
Why do you say that every game?
You are a good player, he is a good player, he won the game, good game, thank you.
Do you know what probability is? You are not unlucky, you observe more the bad events than the good events.
Throw a dice 1 000 000 I bet you 100$ that you'll get an average of 3.5 and not less as you seem to think.
Don't take it bad, it's just that you either 1) Think skill has nothing to do to win this game or 2) That you are better than all other player and that if you lose it's only that you are unlucky.
LOL dude you have no F*****g idea. People say they are unlucky but you have never met an unlucky person like me. I have a virtual unlimited list of examples I could give you but you seem to already know how the universe works so guess I'm wrong. Am I lucky I wasn't born in a third world country? Yes. Am I lucky I wasn't born with a handicap (excluding my impeccable bad luck)? Yes. Am I lucky I had great parents? Yes. That is where all my luck ends. I would bet you anything if I threw a dice a million times my average would be less than 2. I used to think I could control my fate and that luck was made up. Then the universe showed me different and not in a small way either. You think I don't look at my whole situation and that I only see the "unlucky" things that happen to me? You act like I don't know what has happened in my life so farTrust me I do and if we were playing the odds I would have to win the lottery for the next month before I became even for my good luck- bad luck ratio. The ironic cherry to my ironic sundae will probably be me winning the lottery a week before I die. Quit acting like you know my life better than I do. LMFAO...
AND IT WAS A GREAT GAME DUKE I HAD A BLAST! It is an old poker saying btw "If you want to win the tournament you have to win the coin flips."
Itz Denied, don't make this game your life man. Simple as that. When you win lucky battles or whatever... You not talking. It happens...
He loses 4.5-4.5 I win that game. What are you talking about not luck? He won so he won the game whats wrong with that? This game is 90% luck as is poker and life. Everyone on here are great players. If someone wins/loses it is because of luck or a mistake the other player made which is where the 10% skill comes in. Chess isn't about who is the smartest or best player is it is about who makes the biggest mistake first. The wins and losses in this tourney should prove how much luck is a part of this game...
Technically that 4.5 v 4.5 is not a 50/50 battle. Warriors have more hit points. Would you feel the same if the game actually showed the correct odds (about 60/40 my favor)? I did get lucky to get blitz on the WA no question. However, I did also overcome some bad luck such as getting techs in my 1st and 3rd hut. If this game did not have a lot of luck then you would see one player always winning 9/10. As it is with the competition we have, you'll see the best players winning maybe 60% of the time. But I know how you feel. I was on full civ tilt last week (see some of my previous posts in this thread).
EDIT... you might be talking about a different game as I read up. But anyways I'll leave up my side of my Greek vs Dan's Arabs.
I did the grow Athens to 4, pop Irrigation strat as the map was set up will for it. I got a super early oak/hill city will workshop below my cap. I think it ended up with 12 production pretty early. I could also make 8 prod in my cap. I had more than enough to defend. Dan's mistake was attacking the Germans before me. Had he gone straight for me the game likely would have come down to his HA vs my pikeman (his favor). My only counter attack unit was a vet horsearmy. By the time he took the Germans I had already won. Another mistake was him forming archer armies. Instead of 2 archer armies just send 6 archers. Your defensive units cost less than mine so when we ping back and forth you would gain hammers every time. Cat armies vs archer armies are pretty reliable. Also, I did lose a couple against odds battles so its not like everything went my way. I specifically remember losing my HA against an archer with pretty good odds.
Also, when he just needed my last cap I had 9 archers and 3 vet cat armies in the city (one with blitz). I also had cruiser navel support from a lake on the other side. I would have won the game much earlier but I couldn't get cruisers to his cities due to a very weird map with really large lakes.
I was glad I was able to get in two longer games tonight. Was kind of tired of the 10 turn games that I seemed to be playing as of late.
preyforme - will you be available this upcoming week between 10PM - 5AM GMT? Unfortunately I will not be available the next 2 weekends.
Regardless it was super close and that was what decided the game and the blitz upgrade. I also only got barb huts and the friendly I got gave me pottery so it was pretty even as far as that goes.
Hopefully you and prey get your games in before you guys have to leave for a long time again because those last 4 games decide what will happen in this bracket. Personally I'm hoping for a 4 way tie for 4th think that would be fun![]()
I didn't want to bring so strong feeling on your part and I'm sorry about that, you seem to have lived tragic thing and sorry to hear that.
You kind of misinterpret what odds are with that sentences. The previous result don't affect the next one. When you throw a dice, if you have a 6 you don't have more chance to get 1-5 after that. So having a real bad luck don't give you a storage of luck in the future. I think in civs it's different as some interview of Sid Meiers seems to point in that direction...
We had a long discussion on the importance of skill/civ/luck in the past. When some are close between player, the others take more importance in that game. So luck can play more of a part when skill and civs are equal. This is true especially early game, because skill of the player had less chance to influence the course of the game.
I do think it would be good for you to try the dice thing even if it seems like a waste of time, it could give you back some ''faith'' in your ''life''. Let's say a thousand roll instead of a million...
