I personally have a lot of fond memories playing Blue Shift. Even though it's incredibly short, you practically use the same weapons, and story-wise, you're not gonna miss much from not playing it. It is better looking compared to Half-life 1 btw--by late 90's standards lol.
To me, Opposing Force branched out way more than Blue Shift. It's been a while since I've played it but I can remember it introduced a new alien force that your character had to personally deal with while Freeman was busy kicking Nihilanth's behind. It's game length is comparable to Half Life 1 and you also get new weapons.
Personally, I would recommend playing both expansions before moving onto HL2 if you have any interest in playing those expansions--just because HL2 feels like such a different game that once you're done with it, you'll probably just feel so out of place going back and playing HL1-style FPS's for quite some time.
Steam won't let me launch HL2, so I'll start on the add-ons now rather than later.
I remember when I first discovered HL2, when I put it in my X-BOX I was extremely giddy...
☺☺☺☺☺ please, X-BOX was my first devise. I was so excited to play Mario! Little did I know... /childhood robbed
On-topic: wondering why I'm failing so badly at TF2 as of late. I feel like I'm living up to all of the Free-to-Player stereotypes. Try to hit an oncoming Heavy with a baseball? Hit the wall next to him. Try to headshot someone standing still? Hit the top of the neck. Try to Huntsman someone? Hit them in the knee. Try to airblast an oncoming Demoman? RMB decides not to respond. Oi.
I had to settle with a broken old NES from my neighbor.
I was watching the GDC presentation by the Portal 2 developers yesterday. When they started talking about co-op I realized that I need to finish it, ASAP. (Spoliers... didn't catch any but I saw them coming)
If you're having trouble, the first three classes you want to try is Medic, Scout, and Solja. Each have low skill levels for handling, yet the highest skill level in actual games.
What weapons do you use too? You shouldn't use anything but stock on a few classes.
For Heavy I use the default Minigun, a Dolokohs Bar, and default fists (they're all I have).
For Soldier, I use an Original, I swap between a Buff Banner and a Reserve Shooter, and I use the Equalizer as my melee. (I know about the heal-block)
For Pyro, I use a Backburner, a Flare Gun, and the Homewrecker.
For Sniper, I swap between the Huntsman and the Machina as my primary, I use the SMG as my secondary, and I have a Tribalman's Shiv.
I do occasionally play Medic and Scout, but for Medic I often feel stressed by the constant need for medical attention, and I don't have the right reflexes for Scout. I've put quite a lot of time into this game, but I'm still not that good at it. Recently, though, I've been really bad... used to be, I'd be in the top half of the scoreboard every game. Now that's rare.
It is probably worth mentioning that I've been getting heaps of lag lately (lag, not framerate issues). I honestly have no idea why.
Briefly talking about other Valve games, I have only just learned that there are hats in Portal 2. Reading that comic Vito posted influenced me to install it on my computer for the first time. Awfully fun going through it again, since it's been long enough for me to forget the solutions to most of the tests. Only downside is that my GPU would seem to be lacking in comparison to the Xbox I usually play it on...
Oi, Oi, Oi, Do you have the Sandvitch? It's the best Heavy secondary in the game. The Dolo Bar is nigh useless, unless you get buffed health. For Heavy I use the default Minigun, a Dolokohs Bar, and default fists (they're all I have).
The Fists are bad, try going for the Killing Gloves of Boxing. Or, Gloves of Running Urgently. Both are better for someone learning.
That's pretty good actually, But how long can you normally be alive for?For Soldier, I use an Original, I swap between a Buff Banner and a Reserve Shooter, and I use the Equalizer as my melee. (I know about the heal-block)
Buff Banner if you have a good team, or if you feel like you can live. The Stock Shotgun is the best secondary on most classes. My best suggestion is grow compfy with stock, if you ever play Engi or Pyro vs other Pyro's. You'll be glad you did.
Equalz is best Solja weapon, I'd say put that any serious packs.
Also, do you know how to Rocket Jump? or Launch other players up in the air?
How well can you Air blast? For Pyro, I use a Backburner, a Flare Gun, and the Homewrecker.
In all honestly, I'd drop the Back Burner unless you can't Air Blast. Default or Degreaser is best. Degreaser is best unlock right now, the Damage loss is only 3 points. Even then, I'd say you try Air Blasting. This will let you have a HUGE advantage vs everything.
FLare Gun is great though, It'll help you greatly if you can aim well with it.
As for Melee, That isn't bad. You will want to try and unlock Axe crit however. It's unlocked after some many achivements for Pyro, it's the best for someone still learning. (Puff someone with fire, Then "sting" them quickly with Melee.)
That's not bad actually. For Sniper, I swap between the Huntsman and the Machina as my primary, I use the SMG as my secondary, and I have a Tribalman's Shiv.
But, the SMG is pretty bad. The Best unlock in the game, is seriously the pee. Sniper can do SO much damage and help his team with it, In order of Snipers;
Bazaar Bargin > Stock > Machina > Pee Rifle.
Machina is great for someone who has trouble, you can Body Shot everything.
But, And I cannot stress this enough, Do not, and Do not use the Razor Back. It is useless in every sense of the word. Pee or SMG, IMO.
The Shiv is great though, does more damage over time then any other weapon. Great if you hit then run.
Playing Medic is easy, stressful at first. But if you can get a hold of it, you'll be league better then anyone on Pubs.I do occasionally play Medic and Scout, but for Medic I often feel stressed by the constant need for medical attention, and I don't have the right reflexes for Scout. I've put quite a lot of time into this game, but I'm still not that good at it. Recently, though, I've been really bad...
Scout is just to watch other people, don't be afraid to copy someone else. Do what works.
Depends. Sometimes I can go for quite a while, and other times I just run into the battle to be immediately slaughtered by everything. I'll swap to the stock shotty, BTW.That's pretty good actually, But how long can you normally be alive for?
As for rocket jumping, I have never tried it, but I think I have an idea of how it works. In a word, no.
Not terribly well, to be honest. My problem is that usually I forget that it's there. I may try the Degreaser after trying to get used to air blasting. How well can you Air blast?
I don't have that melee, but I'm probably not far from it. I've got a lot of achievements.
Yeah, the Machina's a really nice practice rifle. If I can't get a headshot, I can still body shot and be CREDIT TO TEAM. I'll swap to Jarate, but I've got a technical question here: what would cause mouse lag? Nothing else lags, but sometimes my mouse will sort of randomly stop moving when I'm still trying to aim, and it's really annoying. That's not bad actually.
I've been getting used to it, but I just don't like the pressure. I'll get a hold of it eventually.Playing Medic is easy, stressful at first. But if you can get a hold of it, you'll be league better then anyone on Pubs.
I'll try to do less shooting and more watching next time.Scout is just to watch other people, don't be afraid to copy someone else. Do what works.
On the topic of Mini Guns, I'd say avoid the Brass beast completely. It's useless for offense, it's kinda useful for Kirts Medic or defending however.
Oi, In those times I would take your downtime to try Shotty.Depends. Sometimes I can go for quite a while, and other times I just run into the battle to be immediately slaughtered by everything. I'll swap to the stock shotty, BTW.
Use your best times to get Buff Banner.
Either way, you'll be improving. And getting better, even if in small ways.
Rocket Jumping is what makes a Bad Solja from a good Solja. As for rocket jumping, I have never tried it, but I think I have an idea of how it works. In a word, no.
Tips for jumping, hope it helps.
Rocket Jumping will help you so much, seriously. Either getting to better ground, or movement for a higher advantage
Degreaser is best weapon till it's nerfed, and Stock gets buffed. Simply because it has the Weapon switch which makes everything easier. if you want to use your secondaries more, I'd suggest that. Stock is better for the hit and run though. Not terribly well, to be honest. My problem is that usually I forget that it's there. I may try the Degreaser after trying to get used to air blasting.
Pholog is just terrible, I'd ignore that crap.
It does 139 Crit damage on a burn foe.I don't have that melee, but I'm probably not far from it. I've got a lot of achievements.
Two quick Swings can outright kill a Buffed Heavy, it's That powerful. And so damn useful.
Damn right, I always warm up with Machina when I play. Then switch to my Strange Bazaar when I get going.Yeah, the Machina's a really nice practice rifle. If I can't get a headshot, I can still body shot and be CREDIT TO TEAM. I'll swap to Jarate,
Pee will make you Huge credit to team, use it to take out Heavy Medic's, or key Targets.
I thought I was alone in having this.but I've got a technical question here: what would cause mouse lag? Nothing else lags, but sometimes my mouse will sort of randomly stop moving when I'm still trying to aim, and it's really annoying.
I get this all the time, gotta restart PC/TF2 a few times to fix it. I'm not sure how it does it sadly.
Scout is the hardest class to play, Most of all without much MLG powers or something. I struggle using him, I've improved slightly however.I'll try to do less shooting and more watching next time.
What is your Steam ID? maybe we've played. :P
Sanvich isn't as godly anymore, now that you can't just toss it to the ground and get an instant 150 health refill. It's still pretty good though. But shotty's not bad either.Oi, Oi, Oi, Do you have the Sandvitch? It's the best Heavy secondary in the game. The Dolo Bar is nigh useless, unless you get buffed health.
If you're playing serious heavy, you're either using GRU for the speed boost, or Fists of Steel for the ranged damage reduction. All the other heavy melees are for derping. The Fists are bad, try going for the Killing Gloves of Boxing. Or, Gloves of Running Urgently. Both are better for someone learning.
There are some very specific situations wherein it can be useful. Against a Saharan set spy while you're sniping close to an engie nest is an example of that. But ye, in general, stay away from razorback. But, And I cannot stress this enough, Do not, and Do not use the Razor Back. It is useless in every sense of the word. Pee or SMG, IMO.
Are you sure the lag's coming from your mouse?
Other than those, every other advice that Daddy gave you is fairly spot on.
..Maybe my damage numbers were off, It was around 3AM when I wrote that. Thank you for correcting me Fluvie.
I always figured Scout was for more derpy play, nowonder I have trouble. >.>
On Heavy? I always see bad Heavies get eaten alive. Which is why I didn't think it would be a very good class for someone having trouble. On the topic of Heavy; Is there any real reason for using Fists of Steel vs GRU? I find the GRU to be more useful, I only messed around with the Fists of Steel briefly. Didn't find it useful simply because I couldn't help Build Uber, and I couldn't run far closer during Uber.
And because I haven't touched on Spy, I need to work on mine. I was able to do some good yesterday, I was playing Dustbowl and ended up distracting the team baaad when they were trying to set up. I kept sapping dem Sentries before the Engi could get his nest up. Then stab him, and repeat. His team tried stopping me, Luckily I actually had some thought and wasn't a derpaderp Spy. Ended up SPy capping when they weren't looking.
It's funny, but for TF2, after I played 3-4 games? I fell in love with the Engineer. LOVE setting up a well-placed turret, then keeping it alive while it mows down the enemy (or even, just prevents them from taking a certain path/route to the next control point ... while freeing up my team-mates to focus on covering the other path(s) ...).
As for the heavy: I think the bad ones treat themselves as invulnerable, unbeatable tanks. Or, they're TOO cautious. There's a balance point - you have to know when to stick your face into the fire, and when to pull it back and scream for some burn-ointment. Hehehe.
Haven't played in months and months, though.
I am certain that it is a mouse problem, because when I experience this I don't lag or get any framerate issues. Internet lag is a problem, though. Last game I played, I started with 20 ping and it slowly grew to 220. It mainly goes up when I'm close to other players, so I decreased my graphics even further. Didn't help.
You may even need to partially disassemble the mouse - actually open up the outer case - if the quick-fix method of "tweezers and patience" doesn't work. Good luck!
Then there's the whole thing about how the scout itself moves so fast and has to jump erratically alot which can throw off your aim big time. And unless, you've had similar experience with fast-paced, twitch-fest arena shooters, he's fundamentally alot harder to handle compared to the other classes.
As for the usage of fists of steel over the GRU, there are a couple of instances wherein you can use it to if you want to push a heavily spammed choke (in order to close the distance perhaps) or you need to cross an area that has a clear sightline to a hardscoped sniper(FoS can actually allow a heavy to survive from a fully charged headshot) or you're on a full-on retreat (due to low health most likely) and you need some damage reduction. Those are the common uses for it.
I tried the tweezers. There seems to have been an improvement, but I'm not sure.
Got about 6 Ref, 3 Rec.
About to get 2.66 in a few, and then sell my Nametag. (For 1.66)
Then, going to buy a clean Googly Gazer for 2.22.. then at last, get my Beleated Beak/Noh Mercy for 2.44.
Jarate makes a huge difference, as well as the default shotty. Thanks for the tips. By the way, now that my mouse is functional once again, I can actually snipe with some degree of accuracy.
It's a Discriptionz Tag though, mixed up words.
What is your ID? same as here? I'll add you, We'll see what we can work out. :3
Mine is Sir Headsmen, for anyone interested.
Sadly, I have a untrade Rec only. :C I have the Ref though. It'll take a small bit to get the Rec, since I have a key to sell. Gotta wait two days.
On the topic of TF2 trading, I've collected a load of duplicate weapons. I could probably get something from them (or even the metal made from them), but I want to wait and see if any of my friends will swap over to PC for a bit to play the game. It is a play-for-free, after all, and they'd be starting with all defaults.
EDIT: Now this is funny. Looks like the Chinese have stolen maps from EA (Battlefield Heroes has those exact same building models in a very similar map) and the gameplay from Valve (just look at the classes and those weapons...).
Fluvie puts my Scout to serious shame.
GG's, saved me back there. I was playing so bad though, was farrr too worn out to focus. Plus, that heavy and Medic would double team me so hard.
In Opposing Force, is there supposed to be a morality element to the game, or am I just being evil and considering killing my squad mates?
On a completely different note, I'm looking for a co-op partner for the peer review DLC portion of Portal 2. Hit me up if you're interested.
