H2H Round Robin Tourney 5 of 6

liam got me again today with germans against my english. i got a decent start, getting rome for CoL. he took bejjing. i flooded archers up into the abyss, along with a WA. i beat one of his WA's and got inf. i was entrenched on a hill when he went to legions and attacked. i won the 1st for a gg, but lost the 2nd 12-9. he takes dehli and i see he has a library in bejjing. he uses a gs on feud a turn before i was getting it, then he makes me sell my galley and kt rather than lose it. i have AA's and am trying to muster a KA counter but he's attacking too strong due to his own gg. he switches to democracy and i know i can't turn the tides before he mass expands and/or gets to tanks.

Got one in last night against Slaughterz. My France versus his Rome. I move a couple of tiles and name one settle next to barb for one flag 2 water two trees. I'm surrounded in ice so was only ever going to go horses and head north. He gets a walk in on zulu. I get a HA army out a bit late and get my 100g. I meet Arab who he must of sold BW to? They had a bit of cash so I sold pottery and hbr and attacked with a non vet HA to get the cap in one turn plus BW. Maybe he'd threatened them as the AI don't do much even with BW as they feel safe for 10 turns.

I get a GB and would of gone COR but my teching city was too far away to risk running it out on the battlefield. I use it for GW and then see SOC so I pop that for GS & GE. Tech writing then rush navigation and tech COL. Start of mass expansion towards Slaughterz and he called it without much going on from what I could see with my roaming HA. Good game, will try and catch you again tonight for the next one. Cheers.

Got my games in against SRR on Saturday night. First game was my Japan versus his Egyptians. He gets COR start but I get walk in on the french. I tech HBR take down London for monarchy and get a galley to get horses towards Mongols. Take their 2 pop second city and also Karakoun. Beat him to Code of Laws and expand to about 16 cities and absolutely destroy him in tech and he calls it.

Second game my Rome versus his Germans. I move one tile and settle next to a barb on a hill. there is no food but it has two trees 2 water and whatever is under the barb. I hit the barb and it's oak. Get a few horses out and beat him to a barb on a butoon rush for alphabet. That single horse though got a lot of barbs from the east of him so was well worth the 40g it cost. I then spot China way to the southwest so I crank out another HA as I know if I don't make contact they'll only have a warrior or two there.

I take 4 pop china and sell the HA to get my 100g. I rush 3 settlers from there and fill up the land between me and them. Incidentally there was oak underneath the barb next to Rome. I keep a couple of scouts to the north keeping an eye out for any legions and build a barracks in rome. I'm first to irrigation obviously as he's cranking out elites with gold/trees no doubt. I tech construction and with the 9 hammers in Rome it only took 8 turns to build the Great Wall. I told him I was going to have it next turn and he had a GB which he could of used on it himself so I nearly messed up there but I wasn't sure if he had masonry yet anyway.

We plod on for a while me surging away in tech and built Stone Henge & HGB in Rome. That half price wonder bonus is really neat!!

Not much longer and he calls it.

The funniest thing was listening to the change in his mood in the first game from absolute elation of getting COR with 4 desert & 2 sea to absolute desperation as cap by cap fell to the Samurai.... :-)

We have a group 5 champion! I beat Digital P 3-1 last night. I will write the games up when I get to work in about an hour. There is a fair bit to write up as we also played our African games and must of played for about 5 hours (7 games).

Well I am going to try my best to write up the 4 games I had against digital last night, it might be a bit sketchy because we played 7 games in total in a marathon stint!

First game is my Greece versus his Egypt. I walked for what seemed forever but got two huts and named a tile. I settle where there is a fish/whale/4 hills/oak (under barb) and 2 trees. The turn I take the barb he takes out the Arabs but doesn’t get religion. I see English borders so put a warrior on a rushed galley and timed a walkin to perfection at 3100 for monarchy. There is a single tile island just north of me with double dye and whale!! 

I put my settlers on the island and work gold whilst I get a barracks up and defences in Athens expecting the what I thought was going to be fundi HA as he went to 1 tech after taking Arabs but it turns out he got HBR from a hut.

He then takes Rome but doesn’t get COL (bad luck) and I turn my attention to tech. That single tile island with a library could do 36 science on its own at 2500 bc!! Crazy tech. I could of gone straight for knights but really wanted to use my production in Athens as when I got workshop it could do 18 hammers at 2200 bc. So I have crazy tech crazy production. He did well to keep up with me for a while in tech something like 16 to 14 as he had expanded well from the caps and rushed some libraries I think.

I convert all that production into 2 cat armies, a knight army and a hop army. I send the cats west to take those cities and knights south to go for Rome and those cities. I was still doing silly tech in Fundi when he called it. 1-0.


Second game was his india versus my Egypt. I walk a little to the east and settle on three sand three trees with HGB. Got lots of warriors out early and threaten both Rome & Arabs for 50g. I’ve seen his horses parading around so get some archers and legions in my cap. He brings archers to camp me but I have so much gold and units he can’t penetrate and I kill everything he sends my way with legions. He calls it. 2-0.


Third game was my India versus his English. I walk east and get a goody on way to taking Moscow with a warrior army. I have seen his borders and know I can get that WA on a galley with the 50g the barb gave me and sail in.

I healed the army (as I didn’t want it healing on the boat by accident) and next turn we resynch and I lose the entire warrior army with only enough hammers banked for a single warrior. Rush it on the boat but he has a unit in London now albeit a single horse which if I had waited he would of probably walked out but I was cross with the resynch and a little impatient.

I figured he’d had some bad luck in the last two games so let him have it when a horse wins 3 – 1.5. (2-1)


Fourth game was my English against his Japan. We both walk and bump our settlers into each other at 3700bc. We say hello and then venture off our separate ways. I had 25g but I wasn’t risking settling an awful spot at the chance of stealing them so carried on SE and easily take Rome for Col.

I get a few barbs and switch to Col whilst putting longbows in both caps to stem any galley attacks as I was assuming he had settled not far north over the sea. I get 3 settlers on a boat and hit some dye just south and then a double fish island plus another dye/whale island. I protect everything with longbows and he sends his galley all the way round to them but loses his WA attack 4.5 – 6 at the first city he attacks and calls it. (3-1)

Some good games and some good/bad luck on both sides. I thoroughly enjoyed them though and it was good to get a big session in like that! Feel free to fill in any gaps that I have missed and of course your side of the story.

Yea the mario gods were definently with you for our games. That first game pissed me off taking 2 caps, neither giving me tech. I could have doneso much more if i had republic. It gives you monarchy, the amount of science and production u were doing that early was gross

2nd game u had far better map position. I though i was on an island. Only a small tile connecting us that took time to find and you were able to threaten the 2 AIs twice for gold getting 100g just from them let alone the extra barbs.

You have a good middle game i am not used to GGs

Yea from what I heard he had cruisers at 1000bc or somethin like that one game with a GS.....
