    GOTW Russians 04.03.2012

This week we are the Russians (on island). PS3 & X360 at the same 04.03.2012.
    Others civs are:
    -Arabs (SW)
    -Mongols (far SW)
    -French (very far S)
    -Egyptians (very far SE)
    Artifacts:
    -AoC (8E from start)
    -Atlantis (2S 4W from Karakorum).

From Warlord to Deity: the hardest map ever (island, no chance for 100g strategy).
On Chieftain: the easiest map ever to win (not for scores, 2400 BC is perfect and extremely easy to do, no techs or settlers from villages so non-dom is easy too).

    As for Deity:
-no chance to take AI capital early
-almost no settlers from AI (they are too far)
-Egyptians has HGB and they blocks best production place, very bad for eco and cult.
-CoL very late (1400 or 1500 BC)
    -expanding extremely slow
-only AoC is good, your cities can't be flipped (except: close to Paris).
I expect about 800 AD non-dom and AD dom.

    Yah!

I got 1175AD dom D and that was with 3GBs!!! GSs would have been better...

As usual AI upsets... my 54CA* vs 24AA lost twice on 2 different Caps is outrageous!

*fleet, rel, sam c, inf. GG

Also I got a vet H by attacking Barbs on island (east of start) which later was helpful on mainland. But now I can't duplicated it and I swear I'm doing the same seed...

Is it possible that things can be different in a GOTW?

Probably not, but this week is strange, sometimes i can see undefended egyptian settlers sometimes not (seed changed by nothing?). But everything can change seed (while usually not).
BTW. at this time you are 1st Dom player (on X360 someone did ~1450 AD). I'm not going for Dom, so without cowhead you can win.

My scores - yesterday i posted (on Deity):
-800 AD Tech (2GS+1GB from AI + 1GS, with no Irrigation bonus, Demo 150 AD)
    Today finally i posted:
-700 AD Technology V. (2GB+1GH from AI, later 2GS+2GE; GB for EIC, GB for Oxford, GS for Ind, GS for Space F., with 1 more GS 600 AD was possible). CoL at 1400 BC, Demo at 100 AD (but earlier Irr+Nav), 43 cities (3 flipped from AI), expanding ~5 turns slower (than in normal week).

I was ready to give up on the week, i mean, i really had/have no strategy for this map and the few tries i got in on sunday didnt really go too well but i have time now (met a deadline at work this morning and was just approved so fun times for a week or 2, just in time for china-usa combo )... so i think ill give this a go for fun. I guess my dreams of BC non dom non tech non usa will have to wait a bit more hehe

I guess i'll take on this challange and give some competition I usually dont play dom, i wonder if bombers can do the job quicker this week... it'll be fun trying. When i first started this GotW i use to think only bombers lol until i learned more... now im excited to go back and try them out

You may have just won the award for unluckiest civ rev player in the world.... i dont remember ever being upset with such #'s let alone twice in the same game!!....... but then again i dont play much dom so i dont find my self in these situations too often (some MP and SP) Maybe drop a bomber wing on their head, that should straighten 'em up

Finally a proof you are Human lol.... i had this sick feeling this week waiting for your post that you will make some magic with this map (well you surprise me every week so i kind of gotten use to it)... my guess is that it is still probably the maximum the map allows but i'll give it a go anyways

For tech victory, what is usually the optimal # of cities required? is it ~40? i see from some of youre tech win weeks in past threads, that seems to be the # more or less and for cult or eco its usually lower then that, maybe ~30-35 ..... or do you just expand to maximum count allowed by map every game, or at least target that?

P.S. im not trying to reach a posting milestone or anything , i just suck at multiple quotes in 1 post, i know its probably easy but i have to figure it out and right now my russians settlers are looking at me dying to create a city or something so i must go

    General rules:
    1. you need to expand extremely fast
    2. you need to research Univeristy within 1 turn (300 beakers needed).
So if someone is slow then ~28 decent cities is enough (or less with GB for EIC).

This week i expand very slow, maybe i should make less of cities. But i have 60 beakers for Literacy at 200 BC, maybe 300 BC is possible, maybe i should research Literacy within 2 turns? But i'm not sure about 120 beakers for Democracy. Maybe i can expand 2-3 turns faster but i will have ~28 cities, majority 3-pop only, so GH is critical (and GS for Ind. or i need 3 turns for Ind).

But more cities = more gold and more beakers (you don't need +2000 gold for libraries, i needed 1 library for 160g). And big luck with GPs isn't critical.

BTW. optimal strategy for luckiest civ rev players in the world:
-this week no tech from huts so i don't count it
-in my 1st game (800AD) 2GS was settled in AI cities, next time used for Pottery and study of never
-AI has 6 GP, you will have 4 GP (or 5)
-0 AD GS from 150 culture (i hope)
-50 AD Navigation (Banking from 250g), GS from Tripoli for Ind, GS from Paris for Corp, GB from Paris for EIC
-100 AD Democracy, ~40 cities, AoC, GH from 3rd egyptian city for +1-pop
    -150 AD University, +500 g
-200 AD Monarchy, GS from Mongols (i hope) for Electronics, GS from 150c for Adv.Fl., GS from 500g
    -250 AD Invention, 2000g (+1-pop), 1000 beakers
-300 AD Mathematics, GS from 500g for Space Fl. ~3600g, GB from 2nd egyptian city for Habitation, GB from Monarchy or Inv. for Propulsion, rush all needed parts
-500 AD Technology Victory (but even with 3GB+4GS+1GH 500 AD is possible)

    Kadera,

Speaking of posts, you are 19 away from Supreme member status

    Magna,

I routinely lose with the advantage, so I always show up to a fight with back-up. This make my Dom scores a bit slower but consistant... and on this map it paid off...

everything is sooooooooo slow this week, crazy!
The best i can do this week as far as taking caps is tripoli at 1500-1600 walk-in.... they clear the city from units so I galley dropped it with a warrior but they already have second city which i couldnt quite spot the walkout on that (i doubt i would have made it in time anyways)... so i'm left with 3 cities and CoL around 1300 i think (worse then MP,SP lol)
My first run i got to indust but had no GS and went for bombers but my city count was low and i was making ~110 beakers/turn so teching it would have been way too long so i had to quit...... Next run i got a disconnect about half way through, NICE!! so i may just wait for sunday and start fresh with China... will be fun
I dont think i would have come even close to non dom time but as far as dom with GS+bombers maybe mid AD's is possible for me--- somewhere between 500-1000 but no GS=quit so that sucks.

I totally hear you .... Nothing more depleting then playing 1-2 hours and coming up 1 or 2 armies short

You can take Tripoli around 1600 with a vanilla HA, vereran after 2 barb huts that ends up Blitz, Infil, March GG HA after taking Tripoli. Declare war when they walk out and successfully defend AA attack..... attack city take settler, settle, takeTripoli, Arab legions take your stolen settler/city just take it back after Tripoli. Haven't had time or success to complete dom with cats after that luck goes to ☺☺☺☺. That's just basic settle 4000 no warriors, horseman then galley, then rest of army. Not an easy or a want to play map at all.

I hear you too Magna, i'm wishing for China!

    Cash,

Where were you? You let me keep #1 on the leaders (with a late newcomer tie...)

I took Tripoli before 2000 with a sort of base runners run down, I had non vet HAs on both sides of the cap and the settlers kept going back and forth sometimes with an A and then the AAs came out and I was able to pounce.

Back to the beggining... after the second W1 attack (two heart wounded), I rushed a galley picked up W1 and went to main land... This single W1 ( healing only to one heart!) having Bltz then Mch goes on to 12 consecutive wins and takes unguarded French settlers! 100s in gold! Plenty for spys to take GPs and finance the 2 vet galleon fleets... If it were not for the the 2 CA upsets, I would have been under 800AD (ordinarily not a score to be proud of!)

so thats when they walk first, pretty early..... couldnt find it
having 2 HA's pre 2000BC is pretty good on this map, i never made horses, just warriors and later elite legions....

now thats a warrior lol !!

800AD is nothing to be ashamed of with this map and conditions ... probably beat my bombers, lack of gold and low city count could really make it hard to strike fast
