Any chance it was intentionally leaked to generate excitement and conversation (for feedback)?

Not sure if this ever happens in the video game world, so maybe someone can confirm whether that belongs in the realm of possibilities?
I would seriously doubt it: people reported problems such as the game no longer WORKING. Typically a developer doesn't build hype by breaking everyone's game :P

However, in this scenario, I strongly do not believe that this patch was leaked (intentionally). Game developers NEVER release files out to the public without passing QA first. This patch has not completed QA, so this was a purely unintentional occurrence.
Thanks for info, and I agree with you, having thought about and seen others' comments, that this was most likely purely accidental

Updated the first post in this thread with a video overview.

It's certainly possible that things in that patch end up getting removed due to playtesting or whatnot, and it's also not necessarily indicative of everything that will be in the patch. This patch is still a ways off from release!
So, keeping in mind that EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE you can view a video I made of the main interface here:

Civilization V 1.0.1.558 Accidental Release Video Overview.

The video was recorded in 1080p so you can fullscreen it and read the text in detail if you like.

Ok then, the first gameplay change I noticed is that a city with a population of 1 cannot build Settlers. That function is blocked in the UI, with a tooltip saying a city needs a population of at least 2 to build new settlers. I remember that in 511 cities with pop. 1 can still build settlers, albeit slowly.

This means that your founding city cannot start building settlers immediately.

    uhm, no.

Not sure which mod you've been playing, but Civ 5 has always required 2 pop before being able to get a settler.

What would be interesting would be someone doing file compare of game with 558 and game with current patch. Especially for XML files. That way is easier to see any gameplay tweaks, thta were in the works.

Does anyone else look at that posted video and think that the Civ 5 UI is a work of art? So clean and stylish.

I can't see anything new in your video, except new version number and series of "button-pressings"

what was your intention in this video?
    thanks.

If you watch it full-screen, so you can read the text, AND you've actually looked around the 1.0.1.511 build in comparison: you'll see about 5 new options here and there in the video I made. I also showed terrain features and wonders in case there was anything different in those.

  12. headkase,
OH Yeah! there realy aer new options
I had to look up more deep lol.

please excuse me, and thanks for sharing this video!
I hope this patch will came out soon

You're welcome, what is awesome: CiV came out in September 2010. Here we are in February 2012 and the darn thing is still getting patches! That alone is awesome - it keeps getting better and better long after other developers would have moved onto something else!

  14. Thumbs up

I think we agree, the past is over (soon)

So, yes, I think the "accidental patch" has broken my game. Is there any way to roll back the patch? The game keeps crashing on me.

If you reinstall the game you will get 511 back. I haven't experienced any crashes or problems so far with 558 though.

I Launched Civ yesterday and none of the menu options work. just stuck at the main page and it said where version # should be "unrecognized version" or something like this. had to quit, and verify integrity of files (or whatever the terminology is) through steam. found 1 bad file and took like 10 minutes. relaunched and worked fine.

Right-click on the game in your Steam library, go to properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache.

This usually fixes most issues that people encounter after patches, so definitely give this a try wetroof and jasonstevanhill.

Sorry about getting you all excited for a new patch, but this thing definitely needs more time in the oven before we release it. Those of you who did fire up the game during the accidental window should consider yourselves treated to a sneak peek of things to come
Good to know Firaxis still has a QA team.

For those of you interested in the changes, the one I notice most (because I have to keep restarting) is that scouts can attack. They're terrible attackers, but they can take out Brutes with 1 or even 2 hp.

  22. #62
Scouts have always been able to do that...

So far there don't seem to be any gameplay changes (or they would be number changes that I can't really tell). Does anyone know if the single-player quick combat/movement options actually work?

Scouts can already do that, and if the barbarian's not fortified and there's not bonus for the scout, and they're both on flat land, a full health scout can defeat a barbarian of about 4-5 HP.

What do you mean by gameplay changes? Quick combat isn't a gameplay change.

I mean changes to the game rules and unit/building stats. Things like costs, attack power, tech dependencies, effects of social policies, etc.

When there IS an official release I would expect it will contain more than a few cosmetic changes to the menuing interface. Keeping in mind that this was a random build. It could have contained almost nothing from a programming perspective. It may have been pushed to the QA team with only the menu changes - who knows - while the majority of work, to be tested later?, was kept back. There is no way for "us" to know.
