    1.0.1.558 Accidental Patch

For a brief while Steam offered a Civilization V 1.0.1.558 patch. It is no longer available as it was an unintentional patch as is explained later in this thread:

2K Greg also states, again later in this thread:

So, keeping in mind that EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE:

Loading Screen displayed when you have the opening cinematic disabled. (Thanks Mega-Dolphin)

You can view a video I made of the main interface here:

Civilization V 1.0.1.558 Accidental Release Video Overview.

The video was recorded in 1080p so you can fullscreen it and read the text in detail if you like.

My god, the trolls are everywhere!

headcase, mind doing a search for Uluru or Mt. Sinai? Unfortunately my game isn't updating, so I want further information on the rumor of new natural wonders

I just powered up the game, and I saw nothing of the sort, Pouakai. Serious question, what actually changed?

I just got a mate to check his game, turns out there are files for four new natural wonders. He's firing up in Future era to see if they're ingame. Interestingly enough, these are all (Bar Uluru) relgious - Mt. Sinai, Mt Kailash, and a Sri Lankan mountain

Of course they will give extra faith! Uluru might give extra faith too, isn't it religious to the native Aboriginies?

Yeah, but it's not based on an ingame religion

I've got 1.0.1.558, and it has something many people have asked for:

There is a static loading screen when you interrupt the intro movie!

    Look!

Also, in the options menu there are some options that I never noticed before: Single-player Quick Combat, Single-player Quick Movement, Multiplayer Quick Combat (checked by default), and Multiplayer Quick Movement. I don't know if they were always there, but I just noticed them. I haven't actually played anything, I just noticed the loading screen, went to the options, and saw those new (to me) game options.

Also, under "Interface Options" there is an option to skip the intro video.

Maybe it was released by Steam to soon, I'm still showing 511 myself.

Ok, funny stuff is going on. When I opened Steam on one of my computers, Civ5 patched right up. On my other computer, it refuses to patch to 558 no matter what I do. I even reinstalled the game and it's still at 511. 511 loads up just fine as well, which makes it even more mysterious. However, perhaps my Steam install is bad (it hasn't updated Civ5 news since April), so I'll check Steam. 2K Greg, can we get some clarification on this mystery Friday patch (most patches aren't released on Friday anyways)?

Can I see which version of Civ I have without opening the game? I'm in a bit of a rush and I want to see if I got this 'patch'.

I expected that was the case. Thanks for the info, disappointing though it may be. But those changes are really good and I look forward to them.

Go to your Civ5 folder inside [Steam folder]\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v. Mouse over the executables (CivilizationV.exe or CivilizationV_DX11.exe)and the version number should show up.

Thank you 2K Greg! That explains the lack of patch notes.. Unintentional beta for me!

True. It would be interesting to hear from that person as to the changes and how polished the patch is and thus, perhaps some insight as to how close it's to being released.

I suspect that there will be very few players who still have the patch. From what I understand, you would have to have automatic update turned off and had to manually update your game at just the right time or turned off automatic update just after the original download was completed.

There does seem to be an unintended consequence of the patch-unpatch today for me. My shortcut to use direct x 11 no longer works and I have to manually choose the version I want to play now. Also, creating a new short-cut does not correct the issue. It's not a big deal but more of a minor annoyance.

Well, that person wouldn't be me..! The biggest change I noticed is the loading screen: I have the opening cinematic disabled, normally that would be a black screen until the game loaded. Now there is a splash screen saying "Civilization V Loading" in it's place. I'm pretty sure that's one of the obvious changes - it's been a while since I booted CiV. As for getting it in the first place? Totally fluked out, I restarted my Steam client just at the "right" moment..

Well, we can muse some scenarios.

"Hey Dad, that great new patch - they're withdrawing it! When you turn on your computer again, turn off automatic updates before connecting to Steam."

Yeah, I also have it on my laptop and I detailed some of the changes to the options menus earlier. Is it alright to divulge more information about the beta patch contents like gameplay changes? I still have 558 on one of my computers and I intend for it to stay there.

Is it possible to have the files uploaded to somewhere in order to allow other useres to enjoy the splash screen and the new game options as well? I'd greatly appreciate.

Can someone with the patch check if advanced settings now save? Or perhaps a regenerate map option like Civ4...

Please don't upload the files anywhere. All we need now is people tossing around files that haven't been QA'd (so could completely break gameplay) and then coming back to complain that they can't play.

Not to mention that the auto-updater might not remember to delete those files when the real patch comes out. So we'd have to deal with more complaints...

poke around in it if you want (it's on your laptop), but maybe give 2K a chance to release the info 'normally' first.

Of course I won't share the files. I was just wondering whether or not I could describe any changes to the gameplay. I've participated in game betas before and they've always had an NDA for at least part of the beta.

  31. #31
I think when they distribute the content to every single person in the Internet whose Steam was open at the time of the kafuffle, any chance of keeping contained what's in the upcoming patch goes out the window.

Still. I agree that being discrete about anything you see would be best. This is a forum prone to explosions of rage and angst over the slightest change or issue--revealing that this thing isn't functional or that they're playtesting that thing or that such and such might have its stats changed over to something else will just cause trouble. Let QA do their job in peace :P

I have 558 on one of my computers. When I checked earlier, I didn't see much difference between what we have now to .558, except for the aforementioned loading screen and quick combat options (which are great).

We're not going to tell you not to share anything you learned from it; you're not under an NDA or anything. However, I would ask that everyone keep in mind that this was an in-development patch when learning about what it may have contained. It's certainly possible that things in that patch end up getting removed due to playtesting or whatnot, and it's also not necessarily indicative of everything that will be in the patch. This patch is still a ways off from release!

Still, its good to know that you guys at 2k and Firaxis are deeply committed to this game. I was starting to wonder if we were going to get anything more, espeically with all the announcements of other games coming (namely Xcom EU). A patch with much requested add-ons and what looks like a solid expansion... Bravo! Thanks and youll get my check when it releases...

That's an extremely refreshing response from a video games developer. Coming from experience making mods, I know how it feels to have content leaked and then complained about, so I hope that we're going to keep a good nature about this as a community.

    Just putting this out there...
Any chance it was intentionally leaked to generate excitement and conversation (for feedback)?

Not sure if this ever happens in the video game world, so maybe someone can confirm whether that belongs in the realm of possibilities?

I think Gods & Kings provided plenty of conversation for now. That might make sense if it was released in January or December (when it appeared 2K were in blackout-mode) but now, when hype and conversation is the highest here since release? It was an accident.

Yes this has happened in the game world and it's called viral marketing. However, it's almost impossible to completely determine if that truly occurred due to intentional obscurity surrounding the circumstances of "leaks".

However, in this scenario, I strongly do not believe that this patch was leaked (intentionally). Game developers NEVER release files out to the public without passing QA first. This patch has not completed QA, so this was a purely unintentional occurrence.

Still, I do wish the developers would inform 2K Greg of what the patch is going to focus on so that he could pass the news along to us. Nothing specific, but stuff to discuss.

Man, Firaxis is on roll! This is great stuff...

From concealment and secrecy about everything to pretty much opening up their trench coat and shakin' it all around at us!

    You teasers!
