Well, the First Crusade came about because the Byzantines requested Catholic help against the Arabians. I imagine in the later crusades the Catholics decided that they should be warring against the Orthodoxy as well as the Muslims.

IIRC the Crusaders were meant to fight against the muslims, but in the fourth crusade they were held up, got bored and sacked the place
All, please, this isn't the thread to recall history, or suggest Civs for the game. Let's keep this on topic about news regarding G&K.
Will do.
We all ready for PAX East next week? Or late this week...
I really wish I was going. One of these years I'm going to just go, but I like Boston about as much as I like crowds, so it's kind of a lot to tackle.
Boston and crowds are your reasons? Man, my list stopped at "Penny Arcade."![]()
I just found out last night that my cousin is going. I'm jealous.
If he sends some sweet pics my way, I'll post them to the forum.
At least it'll be a little something to satiate everyone until the big sites post their news.![]()
If he gets his hands on a beta (they will probably(?) have one there) you should encourage him to tell us about it, even if it's just via your account. This is all assuming he has an interest in Civ 5.
Oh, of course. I'll share any news I hear as well, along with any pics. He doesn't really participate in forums (that I know of, anyway), but I'll be his courier.
And yes, he's a big Civ fan (thanks to me), so he's definitely going to check it out amongst all the other things they have going on over there.
you americans are so lucky!! (with regard to this). I would love to go to a big gaming expo one day...![]()
We have "Armageddon expo" in Melbourne (pronounced "Mel-b'n") once a year. Not sure what other stuff we have though?
We have Armageddon here too, although I'd say it's more Comicon than a gaming expo akin to PAX and E3
I'm lucky, I have comicon and PAX in Seattle. We also have Brickcon (http://brickcon.org/)
I am honestly and truly jealous of brickcon
I know. Just when my wife thought I couldn't get any nerdier, this gem comes walking along. I haven't gone yet, but I plan to go to both PAX and Brickcon this year. Just now getting my daughter into Duplo's.
Back to the topic - I really can't wait for PAX East this weekend. HOPEFULLY they announce the final 3 and a firm release date. A maybe a few uniques as well. Just please announce if the dutch gets a unigue improvement, and hopefully others too. There aren't enough UI's in the game.

This is what that statement made me think of. I blame having a toddler.
Hey Zeph - you missed the release date on your update this morning. Looking forward to seeing what else comes out in the next 72 hours.
Well I was born in Breda to Dutch parents and lived for a time in 's-Hertogenbosch when going to high school.
However these days I live in New Zealand where the pleasures of serene calmness**, small-scaled-ness**, and laid back living** come at a price.
**experiences may differ
You get those in Auckland?
I think some of the improved AI combat, including change to 100 hit points, might actually be included in the vanilla patch. My reasoning:
1. Core game mechanic
2. 2K having nothing to loose and opportunity to gain (G&K sales)
3. Why leave vanilla broken.
lol, yeah, hence the asterisks...
seriously though, it's still a relaxed city by international standards. and small scale and laid back, again by international standards.
And drive out of the city, 20-30 minutes and you find yourself either on the wild west coast or up north on the beautiful east coast beaches.
Hang on, now I'm wondering whether you're asking whether we get expos in Auckland?
Or did I get it right first time and you were wondering whether we get laid back living up here?
Either way, yes to both I think.
EDIT:
woah, way off topic, my bad. just checked which thread i'm in...uh...super sleuthing...so...um....
....um...
...release date has been announced...
...22 June...![]()
Point everyone to http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread...50#post1524850
Where jpbar81 has been posting new info his cousin has been texting him from PAX.
Brickarms.com fun stuff
Gonna do my best to keep this thing updated this weekend, but its Easter so that may not be possible.
There's a long list of things that Dennis mentioned in his interview today (can't remember them all atm):
Even strength combat is going to take ~3.5 hits to kill the unit.
-- translates to ~28-30 HP damage/attack (even combat strengths), give or take the random factors. Which means, combat strengths of units are scaled to fit that approximated damage level, but ensures less damage taken from lower combat strength unis.
Huns have:
'Scourge of God" (UA) - Raze cities at double speed. Free Animal Husbandry, +1 hammer/pasture. Steals city names (apparently from the bottom of the list) from other civs when settling new cities.
Units:
Horse Archers (go figure)
Battering Rams (spear replacement)
erm, and other stuff I forget right now.
thx MadDjinn! Keep the info coming!
I was really hoping they'd wouldn't be able to make settlers, but maybe that wouldn't work. It's an interesting fix. At least we will get to see the names of cities that never make it into the game. Luang Prabang might actually make it onto the map now, and Siam will have to steal it back.
Here's the actual interview:

Just jump to about 1:06
THANK YOU! I will finally accept the Huns as a civ. This makes sense now. So much sense (although seeing a Hun city with a name like Leptis Magna will be interesting).
Seems suspiciously similar to the Mongolian horse.Horse Archers (go figure)
Spear replacement? How unusual.Battering Rams (spear replacement)
Any info on any other civs? Any new civs mentioned?
edit: Just looked at jpbar's thread. So, the civ list so far is:
Netherlands
Carthage
Celts
Maya
Huns
Byzantium
Austria (-Hungary?)
Ethiopia
That's eight. I really hope the last one isn't the Zulu. They work as a DLC, Firaxis! A DLC!
Austria (under Maria Theresa) whose ability is something relating to peacefully incorporating city-states into the empire (through marriage). Ethiopia, though no details given. Carthage has a UA to cross mountains and a free harbor in (all?) cities. Byzantium gets a Dromon UU.
The inclusion of Carthage being able to cross mountains makes me think that we'll get an Elephant as a UU again
New resources from mercantile city states are jewellery and porcelain (from the PAX video)
summary from over here: (though maybe not complete)
Summary
New civs:
- Austria with Maria Theresa
- Ethiopia
Spain will additionally be included.
New UA info:
- Carthage: Can cross mountains. Free harbors in their cities.
- Huns: Raze cities at double speed. Start with Animal Husbandry. +1 production from pastures. Huns UU: A horse archer and a battering ram (spearman replacement).
- The Songhai trait will be changed.
- Austria: Unique Ability allowing you to essentially absorb City-States into empire without conquest (sort of through marriage)
New combat info:
- Destroyers are melee. Battleships are ranged.
- Great Admiral heals surrounding naval units
- Dromon UU for the Byzantines, spits fire
Other things:
- National Intelligence Agency (wonder) gives an extra spy
- Huns steal city names from other civs, and trait name is Scourge of God
- More than one religion can influence cities
- The Naval AI does do amphibious invasions, and it is cold and calculating. It is fast and ferocious when doing so.
- Religious CS will generate faith for you
- SP choices in the end game (e.g. autocracy or order) will influence diplomacy
