First I just wanted to say that I've loved the civ series ever since civ 2.

Since farmville is really old news now I was a little surprised that civ world would essentially be just another copy of it. Ok I wasn't really surprised but I was expecting more.

Specifically there are major things missing. The Civ World game doesn't actually end. It just goes on and on. There is no real way to lose, other than by stats. Stats don't have meaning to me. Seeing my cities burned down or my borders shrink matter.

I would rather pay upfront for a better social civilization, than play a free game that makes money from people buying resources earlier.

Given the antisocial behaviors resulting from something as minor as someone else winning an hourly contest. I couldn't disagree with you more about the game not ending. This game has so many opportunities for people to lose that it hemmorages players with every game played. Having images of victors dancing on your grave probably is not a good addition.


Era victories are not stats. Winning an era in civ world is the equivalent of taking a city in the civ series.

I agree there is a game that better defines the civWorld is than civilization, but it is not farmville.

civWorld is the ultimate incarnation of Diplomacy, right down to the rage quits.

I am confused by what you are saying about which games at this point.

But If you have never seen a rage quit in Diplomacy, or never seen a rage quit in Civ World, you have never played either game.

If you are saying no one would ever quit civ World because it is boring because there is nothing to compete for, then you need to look inward rather than outward.

The civ Word environment is extremely competitive. Too competitive for its own good. If you don't feel it, I would suggest it has something to do with comfort levels against predictable computer AI as opposed to going head to head with non-linear human intelligence.

In that regard, I would suggest that civ World is not enough like Farmville for you, rather than too much like it.

I have played both games. I have never seen a rage quit in civ world.

I don't disagree the Diplomacy is a good game. I just disagree the civ world follows it more than it follows farmville and its clones.

If you have never seen a rage quit in civWorld, you have yet to play civ world. In fact, if you, personally, are not accused of doing something to gain an unfair advantage (cheat, spend money, multi account) in every single game you have played, you have not played civ world.

Diplomacy is not everyone's cup of tea, but if you enjoy Diplomacy, and you have yet to get the same feeling from civ World, it is because you have mistaken the game for Farmville, not that the game is Farmville.

but the random and periodic Global Chat Farmville tactic may just be one I'll have to try myself.

p.s. I think it opens a broad range of Zynga, Playfish etc. tactics that can be easily customizable to your ingame opponnents.

I don't agree with this. This game is far from perfect, there are multiple issues with everything from CivBucks and multiple accounts to actual gameplay issues, but..
The game does end, it ends in the same way other Civ games ended. Yes there is no destroying actual villages, molesting poor villagers and whatnot but the game shows both progress and end.
One could say too little is lost in war, too, that economic win is too boring or whatever, but still there is a sense of progress, moving trough time, evolving, if in nothing else, in military units. (might be interesting to see the change of house styles as the years and eras pass - like in city views in all other CIV games)
For me, the missing part of this game is having active larger pool of people at later stages of the game, having say three or four +10 civs within 1-2 research science. At this point the game usually has one clear leader by the time tanks/fighters are researched and the game is over for all but the winning civ..

Farmville clone? You mean like how you have to buy seeds and plant them and grow crops... and then sell them.. and then get your friends to do it too?

Or did you mean the part where you research technology to build military units for use in a real-time card game battles with other allied factions?

Or did you mean the part about how the game ends and everyone loses but the guy(gal) at the top of the leaderboard every 5 days...

I agree that the indtroduction and instrctions are poor, but both of my kids were able to learn the game from them (not how to play well, but how to play).

I think I need to define a new cricket... The, I logged in to play a massively multiplayer game of cIV and all I got was this cutthroat social game cricket.

It is interesting how the forum has changed. Back in September, the forum was full of those crickets as well as rage crickets and I hate civBuck crickets. The I hate civbuck crickets had the greatest staying power. The forum is now populated almost exclusively with Addicted Cricketts (still playing / or wishing they were still playing) and Bored Crickets (not playing but were players).

The forum had a golden age where strategy and game deign could be discussed without a thread being overwhelmed by civBucks Suck and this game isn't civ 4 rants.

We have now entered the Doldrums where it is difficult to hold a discussion about something that has not been discussed before.

In some senses, it is kind of a shame that Firaxis isn't making disasterous game enhancements any more.
