    *Spoilers* Bridging the gap.

At the end of The Darkness, Jackie succumbs to The Darkness by killing Uncle Paulie and has his soul possessed entirely by it. Game's over, Jackie gets his revenge but loses his soul a la Faust. So how exactly does he regain control over his body in between the space of time between the two games? We know that he sought the help of Johnny, but that isn't exactly something The Darkness is going to want to do on its own, meaning Jackie somehow gained autonomy and went for help himself.

And if the Darkness does control Jackie's body when he "dies", why bother relinquishing control whatsoever when it's clear Jackie has no intent of submitting?

I would imagine that as Host....Jackie is still strong enough to take back control of The Darkness, the sequel is set some years after the first ended, where making the choice to kill Paulie, Jackie cemented himself as true host of the Darkness.

He was then able to subdue, and contain the Darkness within him using the help of Johnny..who, sensing the dangers and temptations of The Darkness in Jackie, ran away

As for controlling Jackie during periods of being healed...we know from the first game, that Jackie, via death by suicide...could put himself in Purgatory, where he could interact with The Darkness there directly....by simply being killed, The Darkness wants to keep Jackie in Limbo to prevent him discovering that not only has captured Jenny's soul....but to stop Jackie being trapped in Hell and therefore trapping The Darkness from reaching and being in the Real World.

But I agree...it would be great to learn how they do bridge the gap properly between the moment Paulie is killed..to the time Jackie takes control back and with Johnny learns to contain it

I doubt the new team actually concerned themselves about the ending of the first game, considering how much of a huge departure the second was.

I believe The Darkness II: Confessions comic explains some of the events in the timeline between the first & second games, although I haven't read it myself.

It says exactly what anyone could come up with for themselves - but mostly moanings about Jenny, as well as 'I managed to hold it inside me for 2 years'.

P.S. Reread it, it is just a recap of the first game, and nothing else.
