    GOTW Greeks 12.02.2012

This week we are the Greeks.
    Others civs are:
    -Romans (very close SW)
    -Zulu (far SW)
    -Aztecs (S)
    -Arabs (SE)
    Artifacts:
    -SoC (8N 10W from Rome)
    -AoC (2N 5E from Tripoli)
    -Atlantis (somewhere).

Very good map for very good scores (and very good production - many mountains - max 7).
I posted 2500 BC Dom (opening for non-dom), i can see 2600 BC but i'm not going to do it (useless opening).
As for non-dom BC is so obvious, very early:
    -Republic and Medieval Era
    -all capitals (except 1)
    -100g settlers
But lack of gold is very bad (spies and techs from barbs) - probably wasted 2 turns.

After working on an opening for a while yesterday, i gave it a run and things went really well.... early CoL, one quick Cap after Rome and one walkout, 36 cities by democ. (which for me is excellent), GS from culture,GB from monarchy, GB+GB!! from SoC (3 total GB's,3rd i thought is a waste but it got me oxford+internet+EITC all same turn which was cool) and 2 minutes after that i was blessed with a 2 second power outage!!! lol, which was not very cool..... all down the drain Oh well, not sure about BC win but probably very low AD's...
Still having problems with timing of events.... seems like i often have to wait for GP's a turn or two without true progress (reason i teched NAV that game)

Also for AoC, I always try to max my cities before popping it and im not sure if thats correct or not... specially with the greek 'more great people' bonus, i often wonder if its wiser to timely pop it before with less cities to maybe gain a GP or 2 in the process before getting the ones from bonuses (mon-inv-500-SoC).
Does anyone here pop AoC early? i guess you would have to factor in the galley built for that which would take precious resources from expanding...

You robbed all my GBs I had 0 GB, 2 GS, 2 GE, 2 GA, 1 GH and posted 200 BC. With 1 GB 300 BC is possible, with 2 GB 400 or 500 BC (without 2nd GB i have no money for Oxford).

I don't. It's hard to get 2 GP very early (before GP from 500g or Inv or Mon.), 20 cities x 2-pop + bonus it's only 60 culture points (~6 turns for 2nd GP from 266c). Also: i have no money for galley. This week is crazy: Republic 2800 BC, Demo 1400 BC - very slow expanding.

EDIT: finally i did 300 BC Cultural V (Deity, X360, o777o) - this time 1GB (very late - as 5th or 6th GP), 21/20 cultural milestones, 43 cities (pop AoC with ~36, +7 cities for Steam Power in 1 turn). 400 BC is possible with early 2GB (no chances for 500 BC). Technology Victory is useless due to no proofs (50 AD and faster = 50 AD).

This week many good Dom scores but non-dom players are very slow (except Magna). 900-1300 AD? Why? What's the problem? At 3600 BC: CoL (4 techs) and almost 100g - it's very good, even with no taking AI capitals.

    Weekly spoiler:
3700 BC settle next to barbs
3600 BC caravan to Rome, buy techs, take Rome + CoL
3100 BC Tripoli + Religion (LA + spy)
    3000 BC Fundamentalism, Medieval Era
2900 BC Tenochtitlan (LA + spy)
    2800 BC Republic, 100g settlers
(for Dom: 2600 BC Zimbabwe (fund, 3 x LA)
1400 BC Democracy, ~36 cities, AoC
    800 BC Iron Mine, 84 hammers / 1 turn
    500 BC Communism
    300 BC Cultural Victory

Another week, another lesson learned (it seems like the learning phase never ends!!)....

    My 200AD score consisted of:

3700 same settle spot after friendly and name
3600 Rome+IW (didnt even cross my mind to try and drain the romans from techs and control which tech i will get, i always took it as a random....pretty cool trick)
    2700 Tripoli+religion (after a long grueling fight that started at 3000BC), Tenochtitlan+bronze
    2600 100g settlers
2400 CoL...expansion starts (so many resources wasted to tech this out vs. CoL at 3600!!!! could be used elsewhere... more legions? perhaps a galley+settlers to SoC island? hammers saved for first settlers?,8 food(s) maybe? ............ 120 beakers, crazy......................)
    ----? Literacy from hut
    1000 Democracy 36 cities

I've been in my thoughts all week on how you got republic so early and just couldnt quite figure it out. At first i was thinking CoL from a hut, tried a few variations (even got to the hut on the island in time, or saved the first hut on the mainland) but they all gave me spies... little did i know that the solution was so so simple lol... Thats 4 turns earlier for expansion, Huge!!, and puts me at 0AD.....

Expansion period seems identical (14 turns,36 cities by democ.) and i also built 7 more after that, so somehow i botched 3 turns in the end game... You won in 11 turns from democracy and i won in 14. Not sure what im doing wrong but i'll try and figure it out
Also same production spot (7 mountains).

I'm very excited to give this 3600CoL a few tries and try and score a BC win finally... which i will be POSTING!!! lol!!.... I'm willing to overlook the help for a BC win .... I think it would be my first BC win with the exception of a non proof tech win a while back.

Hahahaha, I robbed you and my electric provider robbed me shortly after... I think you two conspired for a quick counter lol... In any case i would have gladly traded one of them for a GS or even a GH, since i had enough hammers saved to rush oxford.

I agree for this week due to the galley, 30 hammers or 1.5 expandable settlers is a heavy price to pay.... maybe it can be beneficial in other cases though? not sure and i guess it doesnt matter, I certainly take your word for it though

You are so close Literacy it's advantage - 1 turn.

I got Ind + Corp from huts, nothing special

I tried with Literacy from hut:
    -Democracy 1500 BC
    -but spy from 2nd hut
-so GS+GS from SoC (for Ind + Corp)
    Summary:
    -1 turn advantage (Lit)
    -3 GP wasted (or 2 GP & 500 gold)
-you need to rush 3 wonders for ~3000 gold (=1 or 2 turns wasted)
-this way is 1 turn slower (usually ~2 turns slower, when you need to wait for 2 GS from 500g+Inv+Mon).

Couldn't quite pull it off, didn't even get a full try in.... kept messing up the opening and gave up for the week. Lets go Spain!
