Question How the trade window works?

I don't understand how the trade window works.

For instance, I have 2 Cotton and 3 Dyes and I don't have deals with anyone. So I want to trade my spare resources.

Firstly I speak to Alexander and in the trade window only appear 1 Dye to trade.

Secondly I speak to Suleiman and in the trade window appear 1 Cotton and 2 Dyes to trade.

Why my available luxury resources are different depending on who I want to trade?
Why I can’t trade my 2 Cotton and 3 Dyes with anyone?

    Thank you Civ fans!

You can only trade items that an AI player wants. Each AI will want different things and if you're spare resources dont show up in their window it's because they don't want them.

If some of your spare ressources aren't shown in the trade panel, the A.I. already has access to them.

    edit:
However, in case one of your resources is shown, the exact amout shouldn't differ between several leaders.
    Strange!

Along with the fact that you can't trade resources an AI already has, you can't trade resources you get from a city-state. So if you had one cotton, and got an extra one from a city-state, you would still only have one to trade, as you can't trade the city-state's resources. Provided you didn't get replaced as ally, however, you could trade your cotton and still benefit from the city-state's.

BUT you can trade their strategic resources.

Really? That seems... odd. I haven't tested it, but that shouldn't work. What if someone else bought the city-state during the trade? Would that just screw over the AI? Because you would lose the resources from the city-state, meaning the AI loses them, but you would still have what you traded for (if it was money or something). I thought that was the reasoning behind not letting you sell city-state resources.

Otherwise, you could just sell someone a ton of resources from a city-state, then declare war on the city-state. They would lose everything they traded for, and you wouldn't even take the diplomacy hit you normally would for declaring war on the leader. There still would be one, but not nearly as high had you simply traded a ton of resources to the AI then declared war on them.
