    XCom: Enemy Unknown Collector's Edition?

    Greetings all. I've been a big fan of the original XCom for many years. I still have the original PC and PS1 versions as part of my collection. Like many fans around the world, I'm hoping for a collector's edition. Not just any collector's edition. Something really special. If there is a collector's version released, what would you like to see as part of it? I don't think stun rods should be included.

    One of those classic manuals that the first few had written as if they were top secret documents. A sci-fi hand gun clip or something that makes it stand out. Most of those collectors additions have a figurine of some sort... If we could pick any alien what would it be....

    Just so you know, it was "XCOM: UFO Defense" in the US and "UFO: Enemy Unknown" in the UK. Which is one of the things I like about this new game, it combines both of the old names for it's name.

    Weirdly, Wikipedia tells me it was X-Com: Enemy Unknown on the PlayStation.

    Since the world contains more then two countries:
    USA, Japan -> X-COM: UFO Defense
    Rest of world -> UFO: Enemy Unknown

    It might have been, I didn't have a PS1 back then and I didn't really look at the name of it on my friend's disk who did have it. I just know the names for the PC game because my friend had it originally and had the manual, followed by me getting the collector's edition and then eventually buying it on Steam. I also just watched through the steam version where the game is labelled as "XCOM: UFO Defense" when you buy it but after the opening cinematic it labels the game "UFO: Enemy Uknown." Compare that to my CE disc that is directly labelled "UFO Defense" and has a "UFO Defense" strategy guide on the back of it. One can see it has been known as both names.

    Oh, I wasn't criticising, just remarking on something I'd noticed earlier and which your comment reminded me about.

    A book of concept art from the original and the remake and model soldier in a flying suit

    All of that, plus the original game thrown in as a bonus.

    Or maybe them picking up "Project Xenocide" which is supposed to just be a re-skinned original. I know I would love to be able to play UD or TFTD w/o having to use a dosbox that is laggy (from what I've been told the lag is because dosbox can't slow the computer down enough which leads to the game having issues). Originally the game didn't have a half-second pause between updating the time in geoscape or the weird lag that I now experience while scrolling during a tactical mission. And updated graphics that aren't pixilated would be nice.

    Don't usually buy special editions, but I'd definitely buy this one. I would love a skyranger, interceptor, UFO, alien, pretty much anything, except possibly a soldier. People would be like, "Nice Gears of War figure, dude" at which point I'd hit them.

    I would definitely like a Collector's Edition with a little Chryssalid action figure.

    Chrysalid Plushy?

    Deep One Plushy or a plastic Tentaculat with rubber tentacles coated with a mild anaesthetic. What do you mean that they're from TFTD? Oh well.

    Agreed about the pixellated graphics, but I'm playing EU with no lag, and TFTD with no lag as well, although the sound does occasionally get messed up in TFTD making me quit the game and start again. This is the setting I used in DosBox:

    core=auto
    cycles=auto limit 28000
    cycleup=500
    cycledown=20

    Concept art book is a good one.

    I was thinking the same but wasn't sure who owned the rights to the originals. Would be cool to have the original looking DVD on the shelf again. I lost mine years ago and had to buy one of those cruddy new looking ones, just not the same.

    Some great ideas here. Keep 'em coming! I personally like the idea of the sculptures. The Sectoid one would be something to see. Honestly, they all would be great to see in sculpture or action figure form. If there is an action figure line, Mcfarlane Toys comes to mind as they have been making some great series for many years.
    An audio CD or maybe something interactive blended with the art of the game. Or, a hardcover book filled with everything from the XCom Universe with plenty of detail. Something that comes to mind is how the Halo: Reach one was done in the collector's edition. It was packed to the seems with all kinds of interesting stuff. The design of it was very cool.
    Some other ideas:

    A key chain made of "alien alloys"
    A thumb drive that lights up which includes the original Xcom game
    High quality poster of all the alien races and technologies to research
    Random holographic card of an alien race, technology, or weapon
    Mousepad

    Whatever the CE has, if it comes out, I will be getting it without a heartbeat. I have to say when i saw what they were doing with Marin's Xcom I was a little disappointed, but this gives me a game im REALLY looking forward to now.

    I love the idea of Collector's Edition things that you can actually use. I don't generally get CE's - statuettes etc are pointless to me, but a key chain? Flash drive? Great ideas.

    what about a SHIV, that actually walks (sort of like a remote control car), but can also act as a USB (let me just put my USB in *grabs controller*), and is made of alien alloys, and has a small sectoid who rides on him spurting out alien insults... =p

    Sorry, just trying to merge ideas =p

    Like the USB and the SHIV idea. Dont know about the remote control but the mix of the USB inside it is good. The figgurines just sit around on a desk and gather dust. At least if it had USB it would be useful. The idea of that USB stick coming with the originals installed on it is good too.

    Seriously, how about a little globe that has little red lights randomly move across the surface?

    From the rock paper shotgun interview:

    Jake Solomon: The first prototype I wrote was basically a recreation of the original game, so we started with everything: time units, which I know you’re going to ask me about [laughs], time units, ammo, everything, a recreation of the original game. So what we wanted to do was start from that point and say ‘ok, we don’t take anything out unless we can improve it.’ That was a good three and a half/almost four years ago at this point

    RPS: You know you could probably just release that prototype today and you’d make a fortune overnight.

    Jake Solomon: (laughs) I don’t know, I suppose it would have interest, maybe that’s something we should put in the collector’s edition or something.

    DO IT JAKE, DO IT!

    It would be cool, but it'll never happen. They wouldn't want to send out a prototype game for quality control reasons.. it might be as glitchy as Skyrim! I'm sure most of us die hards wouldn't care and the pc community would be happy to mod away the bugs. But I just don't see it happening.

    3d geoscape globe sounds pretty cool. Can we make it a functional controller that will rotate the in-game geoscape too?! That would be hilarious and awesome.

    Yes. I would pay for a ~100$ collector edition if it included XCOM EU and the XCOM EU prototype in a playable state.

    Ditto. Hell, if it can be modded and balanced properly, it'd easily be worth the cost of 3 games to me.

    He must have expected he was going to get a reaction like this, saying that.

    Also, that marks a pretty big turnaround since 2010, when Meer and other journos kept trying to excuse the FPS by implying that a TBS would be unsaleable, or at least viewed as such, back when he also seemed to think that believing there could ever be another TBS X-Com was ridiculous and when the guys at Marin told him their game was "Definitely not a prequel" (yes, they said that).

    I agree, and if it was bug free I'd pay up to $100 for it.

    The part that gets me is that those comments were in 2010... and this xcom has been in dev for 4 years... when you do the math it is like writing off a game that is currently being made. That would've made all the devs feel pretty secure about the game making it this far

    And it should wink right before firing.
