    Thumbs up Drama in xcom

Will there be some kind of drama in this new Xcom game? Something similar to Mass Effect.

E.g: Xcom operatives got killed by muton alien, Muton alien laughs out loud saying "Everything here on earth will be ours! Obey us or die!"

Xcom operatives are outrage and takes revenge...etc..etc.

Some kind of story like that might make the story of the game more interesting. A plot twist here and there. And then you have the story continuation in Xcom 2

I don't think I'd want that in an X-Com game. Sounds like it'd require pre-made, pre-plotted, persistent soldiers. Maybe have a plotline with scientist and commander characters back at base, a-la UFO:Afterlight, but I think it'd mostly be a distraction. I liked the way the original did it - the story that was there was delivered via the UFOPaedia and gameplay.

Nothing similar to Mass Effect please, either Valkyria Chronicles style and quality or nothing. Nothing is alright with good customization options.

Umm... no. If I want to hear that sort of thing, I'll play Freedom Force - an excellent game in its own right - but anything like that would ruin Xcom. Any story must be very loose indeed - by the sounds of it that's what they're doing: a freeform game where you make your own decisions, with a very loose story framework.

One thing that might be cool to add is if your soldiers sent and received mail from time to time. Something like a love letter from a significant other back home that adds a little temporary morale boost for that particular soldier. Perhaps grandpa got snatched by aliens and your soldier receives a slight damage boost for the next mission.

It doesn't have to be all tactically beneficial either. Maybe your squad commander has had to write one too many letters to fallen solider's families and it's really starting to weigh on his psyche. Minus movement rating for a mission or two.

Personally? In a turn based game "story" or "drama" isn't something that's going to work. If you look at something like Alpha Centauri, which does have a pretty in depth story for the faction leaders as you go through (not that I used to read it as a kid... it's something I came to appreciate later ), you'd see that it works in more of a "hands off" sense.

"You killed my best buddy Joe-Bob, prepare to die!" from the squaddies doesn't seem like the best thing imo... I think it would be better to leave the drama for the FPS

The best drama you'd find in XCom is getting MC'd on the first turn while most of your crew is still inside the Skyranger .
ssssomething is very wrong in hereeee.

Very untrue, I believe you have never played Tactics Ogre, which is the founding father of SRPG in Japan, coming out one year later than UFO Defense. Its drama can crush whole Mass Effect series between its two fingers. It works excellent, when done right. There are tons of other examples, just needs to be thoroughly well written.

I haven't played many tactics games. Beyond Civ, Alpha Centauri and Sim City 2000 I wasn't really raised on them - and pretty much anything that has a "story" along the one that comes in JRPG's I can't sit through for various reasons.

I would agree that drama has to be done right - but given the amount of demand for nitpicky, in depth details people want from XCOM:EU, is it the right place to have it? Personally, I don't think so. It would only take away from the time needed to be dedicated to the rest of what people believe is integral to the game.

I said something along the likes of that, X-COM is alright without it and it needs to be either done in detail and with care or none at all. I just had to point out that turn-based and drama can work well together and it doesn't need to be confined to shooters. Even X-COM can be better with it but I never expected Firaxis to implement that as their experience is none in that particular area so it probably wouldn't turn out that good.
