    New to the Seiries

I am very new to fresh to the XCOM series and would like to know what the best way to start is, I know how to work dosbox, and am generally a PC gamer, What do you all think is the best game to ease my way into the series concepts UI and such.

Start with the original, X-COM : UFO Defense. You can find it on Steam and other digital distribution sites for around $5 USD. They also seem to have a bundle that includes all 5 games for $15 USD.

Agreed. UFO:enemy unknown or as it was known in US X-COM:UFO Defense is the best to begin with.

If you want something different (and a little bit weird) go for Apoc, if you want something a lot like UFO Defense but harder, try Terror From The Deep.

Terror From the Deep. Mechanically it is better than the first X-COM (as in better weapon balance etc) in many ways and is significantly more difficult than the first. I still have nightmares about some of the terror missions... particularly the cruise ships. Long hallways with tiny rooms on both sides potentially hiding aliens that will one hit kill you in melee and can absorb a lot of your ammo before going down... or showing up at a land terror mission with a submarine full of weapons that only fire underwater!

TFTD is definitely your best bet if you don't mind a challenge.

Just keep in mind that compared to other games, XCOM/UFO Defense is already a challenge, so saying that TFTD is more challenging does mean that even on easy you're in for some difficult gameplay for a beginner!

Apocalypse is very different to the original and TFTD- some people prefer it, but I was never able to get into it. I think it's probably harder to understand from the get-go than UFO and TFTD are, which is saying something, but if you wanna grab some tutorials and try it out, maybe you'll enjoy it!

I say it depends on what kind of scenerio one likes. The underwater-setting of TFTD or the realistic (based on the conspiracy theories of that time) feeling of X-COM EU (where one could image it being happening right now).
Other then that, these two games are basically the same, just different setting. OK TFTD as bigger maps, but I dont need that. The only new FEATURE that TFTD introduced, is being able to open doors without going through them (which is admittedly a very usefull feature).

Sod that! Get it from Gamersgate - £2.49 the lot.

-Bloodsportsman: Give Apocalypse a try, personally I loved it. Some of the aliens look a bit rubbish, but the gameplay is superb.

The city's pretty cool though - I like the way you actually see the UFOs flying around.

I really liked the tac gameplay in Apoc, but the strategy stuff was just super weird to manage and understand.

I would follow the releases, X-COM : Enemy Unknown, then on to Terror from the deep... and then Apoc. To me each was a little more involved. Apoc was hard to get started and work out. Once I worked out what everything done and played it through, it became my favorite (TFTD a close 2nd). It had such a level of complexity that I can go back and play it every few years with no problem. All the modern games wish they could put that much in a game
