I play the DOS 1.4 version, originally installed from the diskettes and I don't use any patch other than XComUtil (which can changes/fixes a lot of things but not what we're discussing here). Seb76's UFOExtender is for the CE version and it does make changes there, but only to allow a human player to access the inventory of mind controlled alien (you're not supposed to do it on the original game, but there's a way to cheat).
I can ask at the Strategy Core forums since there's people there that will know/check this it but to me it makes sense to limit this to the human player (when you've researched Psi-Amp you've won the game, since you can now win any tactical fight by mind controlling all the aliens) while allowing it to the AI and give it more options (specially grenades in the middle of a group of XCOM soldiers).
1.4 is the patched version, the original of course is 1.0, two patches were released from Microprose 1.2 and 1.4. I tried the patch once and found out 1.4 permanently damages sound files so I reverted to 1.0 and never patched it after that.
Presumably, any digitally bought copies, such as Gamersgate and Steam are automatically updated to the latest version?
A question about Mind Control: does the man carry the Psi-Amp have to be able to see the alien - if not, does it make any difference to his chances of success? What if he's sitting in the ship - can he still frazzle an Alien's brain?
XComUtil says my version is 1.0, but someone told me that it is actually 1.2, although I think there isn't difference other than one being the US and the other for the European version. I don't think I ever patched (or used the CE version) because of the same reason as you, i.e. the alien death sounds became muffled.
One question, since we started this discussion did you tried having your soldiers mind controlled with no weapons on their hands and see if they access the inventory? No offense meant, it's merely that I've made quite a few errors of perception regarding the game mechanics that I didn't believe when I was told but afterwards found out that my memory was wrong.
I haven't played TFTD for many years, but from what I've heard it's much tougher than Enemy Unknown, which is tough enough as it is! Isn't there a mod around that reduces TFTD's difficulty to something more akin to EU's?
One other thing about the original - once an enemy has dropped their weapon because they're panicked, or you made them throw it away through mind control, do they ever pick another one up? I ask because I've frequently seen them wondering around with no weapons.
No they don't Sectoid.
Thanks. Assuming panic/mind control is in the new game, that should be addressed.
So, it's coming to that time again - Cydonia or Bust. Quite funny how I captured the Alien Commander this time - stun bomb to the head, and then one of my girls popped him into her backpack and off we went. Ha ha ha ha!!! Probably more likely she had to drag it back to the exit lift and these things weigh a ton - it was a Snakeman Commander. Still, the idea of sticking a whole Alien into a backpack sounds hilarious.![]()
You can simply play at a lower difficulty level but most of the difficulty from TFTD comes from several changes from UFO:
* Weapons are not as useful. The only decent weapon with autofire ability is the Gauss Rifle and Gauss now requires clips, which makes it even less useful. And the initial weapons are almost a joke, plus you can't use some of them on land missions.
* Maps are bigger/more complicated and the terrain harder to destroy. The ship, alien base and artifact missions are all 2 part missions and it can take forever to kill all the aliens.
* Aliens are more dangerous/aggressive - they'll use more grenades (and now you can set multiple explosions with sonic pulsers) and they have just been made meaner and harder to kill. And with Mixed crews you'll face a lot of races instead of 2.
* The tech tree is horrendous - you need to pay a close watch, otherwise you'll mess up the research and end up missing key technologies to win the game.
* Scoring has also been changed (guess to who's benefit?)
Hasn't the research tree thing been patched? Having said that, when I first played TFTD, I don't remember coming across any game-breaking research bugs, but then again maybe I was just lucky.![]()
I'm having a couple of problems with TFTD - the mouse is running too fast and the game just isn't running as smoothly overall as Enemy Unknown. What are the best settings to try for DosBox?
